Where the hell have I been?

Friday Jan 29th: Storm Gertrude (I think that was the one) started battering Scotland all over the place, and in the midst of it all, slap bang in the middle of watching a stream, internet stops working. Turns out what had happened was that some trees in next door's garden had been blown over by the strong winds and collected our phone line on the way down. Phoned up BT to see what could be done, as it's BT infrastructure we're stuck with, and someone would be out to check on it within four working days. So immediately that's at least two days disconnected from everyone.

Wednesday February 3rd: BT guy comes round to take a look at what's happening with our line, with a prominent moustache. Comes into the front room, takes out a piece of equipment to measure the signal and detect a problem. Equipment does something, and he doesn't bother telling me what it was. Goes outside to take a look, then claims he can't do anything because the gate to next door's garden is locked. Completely overlooking the foot-and-a-half high fence immediately next to it that I could trip over. Gets in his van and fucks off.

Thursday February 4th: Phoned up BT and navigated our way past the robot at the front desk to an actual person, who happened to speak with an obvious Indian accent. Appointment was made for Friday between 1pm and 6pm. My mobile number was given as the contact, and I receive a text message giving a phone number to call them on, as well as a website we could use to check if our equipment was working. I'll let you figure that one out yourselves.

Friday February 5th: Nobody arrived. At all. Waited in the front room most of the day, no van, nobody in a high-visibility jacket, so obviously starting to get quite pissed off. Phoned up BT again, and it turns out that for external faults (which ours was), they do not do appointments. So why was an appointment made in the first place, we asked? Asked to speak to someone who knew what the fuck they were doing, was told we would receive a callback. Began to explain that we did not want a callback, and were hung up on midway through. Eventually were told later that someone would be around on Monday, as this was within the four working days mentioned previously.

Saturday February 6th - Sunday February 7th: Kept myself occupied with SmackDown! vs. RAW 2006 on the PS2, and a selection of Steam games on my laptop. Gemcraft Chasing Shadows was pretty good, and I had plenty of fun as an Engineer on Team Fortress 2. Kinda shit when you can only play the AI, though.

Monday February 8th: Nobody arrived. Again. Decide to give them the benefit of the doubt, as this was the third working day since we last raised the fault with them, so we waited to see what would happen on Tuesday.

Tuesday February 9th: Nobody arrived for a third time. Phoned up BT once 6pm had passed and gave them an absolute bollocking. Were told someone would be arriving on Friday to sort the problem.

Wednesday February 10th: BT guy arrived unexpectedly at around 12:30 in the afternoon. Did the measuring thing with his equipment, and informed us that there was a break in the line 54 metres away. Went to next door, who had propped the gate shut with a massive brick on the other side, but this guy decided to jump the fence instead. Asked if he could use the driveway for his van (which the last guy neglected to do), got a ladder out, went up the pole, swapped out the broken cable or a fresh one. Tested the cable by phoning my gran twice, who later called back to see what had happened and then segued into a rather long chat. She does that.

tl;dr Internet/phone was lost without warning a week and a half ago, and I've only just gotten it back. Also BT can go entirely to hell, especially the git with the moustache.

Blegh. This is why I keep a Social Media cannon armed. I've noticed that large companies might not give a shit when you call, but the moment, the VERY MOMENT you pop a few rounds at them over Twitter, you get someone that will near-instantly come to your aid and actually get shit done.

When I was in Florida, I had a similar problem with my ISP there. I was being de-prioritized so that they could service new customers that were wanting to watch the Super Bowl in a week and a half, and so I fired a potato over Twitter. Something about how I get to go eight days without any service while they're busy installing service so people can watch the gridiron grand finale. About five minutes later, I was getting all kinds of messages, apologizing for all of this, and had an appointment set up for two days later.

Guy actually came out, checked, found fault in the previous chucklefucktrumpet that worked on it just laying the line on the ground. Maintenance had been mowing the lawn behind our apartment, and sliced through the line. Barf. Had me fixed in about half an hour.

Rest assured I've given them some flak over Twitter about this myself. Couldn't really do that without a net connection, though, so this'll have to do.

I'm not entirely surprised at this sort of thing happening, though, but this is something I'll have to look into in future.
