New (Free) editing program?

I use SAI for most of my art, but SAI doesn't have some things I need, like a text tool, or the ability to crop and resize images. For these, I usually use GIMP, but lately GIMP has been acting weird, not really letting me change tools and generally being an uncooperative, frustrating mess. I've been digging around the web looking for solutions but none have been forthcoming. I tried updating it, I tried looking for this specific problem, ect.

So, I need a new option. GIMP's big advantage is (or at least was, before it got screwed up) is that it is free. Does anyone know of anything I can use instead?

Paint.net?

Thanks. I'm giving it a shot. The big drawback seems to be that there are a lack of shared compatable layer-using filetypes between it and SAI. But it looks like the learning curve won't be too horrible.

I presume this is for Windows, since you mentioned Sai.

How about paint.net? http://www.getpaint.net/index.html

There's also Pixlr https://pixlr.com   and Krita https://krita.org  and rather specialized, GrafX2 http://pulkomandy.tk/projects/GrafX2

Oh, and while lots of people like to claim Adobe CS2 is free, it's not. They posed a no-DRM-check installer when they turned off the DRM server, but you're only supposed to use it if you have a legit license.

Thanks! I'm giving Paint.Net and Krita a shot. They seem to do what I want to do, though I do wish the selection tool was a little bit more flexible with being able to select an area of a specific size. But! I might just need to tinker with either of the programs for more than just a few minutes.
