Chay Plays may be getting a YT network partnership.

This is pretty big news. It could mean a lot more views, subscribers, and obviously money for Chay Plays. I've talked to the network, looked at it extensively, and determined it's a pretty good place. There's no lock-in on the contract, so I can leave whenever I wish, for any or no reason, and having a network putting butts in seats for me is exactly the thing I need right now.

The only thing is, it means I will run ads on the YouTube channel, as that's how networks work. I've said I wouldn't do that in the past, but this particular network has a surprisingly compelling reason I've never thought of. This network is a charity network. The ad revenue is split 60/40, 60% being mine, and the remaining 40% going to the network, which donates all of it to various children's hospitals, a charitable case which I can absolutely support.

As you can see, I have a bit of a conundrum. I don't want to run any ads, but by doing so I could be helping a lot of sick children. It would benefit me, and my business too. Of course, the website would remain ad-free, and anyone could always adblock them on YouTube.

I do not like placing ads on my channel, as, by advertising, I might be construed as endorsing a product or service that I do not actually endorse, for whatever reason, and that feels dishonest to me.

I am not sure what is right to do. I like to help, and this would really help me, too. A lot.. But I wouldn't want to rescind on my own word.

It's my personal belief that helping people in need is more important than personal integrity. Although I know there are people who'd disagree with me on that.

Honestly I'd say go for it. A network can be an excellent way to get a kickstart to a channel beyond word of mouth.

I think the only people who can still modernly be construed as endorsing the products that get advertised are old-style radio deejays who promote local entrepreneurs and small businesses. For everything else I'm fairly certain that the collective understanding is that the people on the show have nothing to do with the commercials, at all. I think this is a moral quandary that is irrelevant to modern day practices.

As an avid watcher of TV, I can say for fact that The Price is Right doesn't endorse feminine hygiene products, even if they appear on commercials while the show is running.

Don't worry too much about it. People aren't going to think you support a product during a broadcast. This isn't FA and it's ad debacle that took place a little while ago. You didn't okay adult ads against your own ToS or anything without even checking it first. The benefit of this continues to be that if you do happen to see an advertisement on your channel that you don't agree with, you can protest it and then leave the partnership with seemingly no strings attached.

I'd like to think the ads are just going to be the typical YouTube ads, which as far as I'm aware are centered around Entertainment and connected services, and PC stuff.

And seriously, who doesn't use Adblock anymore?

I was going to suggest someday if we might take a month of advertising on FA - as deplorable as the site is, it's my understanding that the user-made adverts garner a fair bit of attention. This partnership seems like a better deal.

The general understanding as far as I knew was that Youtube ran a number of randomized adds out of a pool of their sponsors. I highly doubt that individuals like Markiplier or SeaNanners endorse auto insurance places or anyone suspects that they do. I agree with Nori and Milkie on this one.

It'd be the general targeted ads everyone gets on Youtube when monetizing.
I'm sure you're not advocating random shit like Twerkalean Drink Powder, or Dhole Pineapples, or Boy Bawang.

People generally understand this these days.
As long as you can verify that this network is living up to their promise of donating everything to the children's hospitals, etc., why the hell not?

That's my thought on it.

I think, as long as the revenue is only supporting Chay Plays and chartities, and not lining someone's pocket, it's an acceptable situation to me.

I don't mind if you run ads. Especially not for a deal like this. Sure, ads are frequently annoying, but it's a pretty tiny annoyance in this context. I understand your concern about appearing to endorse things you in fact don't, but most people ought to have grasped that the ads aren't chosen by the owner of the channel. :)

(Edit: and I do not use Adblock, because I know some of the channels I follow get less revenue then. I've wondered if it makes a difference to click skip on the ads where that's an option, though. Would you know?)

Haha, fun fact: it looks like the ads adjust to my search history some way, because I usually get a mix of Swedish and US-originated ads, but after looking for a lot of Hibari Misora stuff, the Swedish (usually boring) ads got replaced by Japanese (a lot more fun) ones.

To answer your question as an aside, the skip-able ads I know do not count as a view unless you watch them for 31 seconds. One of the small benefits of being in this kind of thing is you find out a lot of trivia like that about the inner workings of these systems.

Shit, I take ages to reply to messages. But thanks for the info - now I make sure to let ads run on channels I want to support.

It seems like a fair deal to me.  Given that you weren't aware of a charity partner group like this existing when you said you wanted to go ad-free, I don't think it's that big of a deal to change the stance now.

I am a bit curious though if youtube gives the channel owner the ability to refuse a specific ad they don't want anything to do with or if it's just an all-or-nothing deal.

I would say that this avenue to make some money from this is something to explore and look into.  The ads themselves don't reflect YOU and what you want either.  More importantly, I think it would be alleviated to a degree by the fact that for whatever profits you do make, a large portion of them are going to charities as well.  So in a sense, even if the content of the ads themselves is something that you disagree with, they are paying towards helping sick kids at the same time.  I'd say that's a great use for some of the stupid things I've seen promoted on YouTube anyway, and the people paying to put the ads out there are going to put them out regardless.  So the money may as well go to you, and to kids that could use that money to get better.

That's how I feel about the prospect at any rate, and I hope that it gives ya another viewpoint to consider.  In the end, you gotta do what feels right by you too, so don't be afraid to ask questions about what kinda ads that'll be run too!  At least that might give you a better feel for what you're gonna be involved with.

I don't mind ads on videos, it's when YouTube channels actually start using product placements for shit they don't use that would annoy me. Take Game Theory doing Naturebox. They might have tried it before and determined it disgusting, but they still do it. The good part is when someone like Caddicarus advertises the service that has wallprints of various games that look really cool (can't remember the website right now). That's something I would like to use in the future and 15% off is beneficial if I want to get it.

That's my belief there. It's your decision though.
