Terrible turtle art mistakes and future goals

by
Looking back at my work I can see I have come over some terrible hiccups. Drawing turtles is not easy for my brain.

Art crimes I think I have beaten:

Weird face position & big foreheads - the first thing I left out of my gallery -_- Man that brow is so low on turtles.
Giant turtle heads - this is a common one. Too bad I didn't notice this until after my work demanding pin up paintings. Cutesy proportions don't go well with the muscular 2003 designs...
Wonky head shape - Where the head is bloated out and skewed on one side, also that "frog faced look". I still do this sometimes though.

Art crimes that I can see are still present:

Bloated lower halfs - I elongate the back and bloat up the legs quite a lot.
Tiny hand - first it was giant hand, now it's tiny hand!??! Come on!
Horizontal stretchiness - I think this might have something to do with the format I'm working in. I usually draw in landscape mode.

Lazy artist:

Sketchy hands
Silly weapons
Turtle pickles - if you're gonna draw porn, why not draw the dicks better? >_<
Lazy anatomy reference (I draw from memory/imagination most of the time. That's just stupid 'cause I don't know how most of the stuff I draw works).

Art goals!!

Bigger, stronger, more masculine - I love the turtles in 2003 series. More bara the better.
Keep 'em short! - I like my guys short, but I draw them too tall-looking.
Better legs - I love me some thighs. Gotta look up on them.
Everybodys favorite enemy: hands & legs - They could be so much fun to draw.

Please, let me know if somethings in my drawings weirds you out or if you see me repeating the same mistakes over and over. It would be a huge help! My brain likes to keep things from me...

D'aww thank you! I studied art and after graduating I lost all my creative drive and for a while I could not draw anything without a model. Fanart is my way of trying to get back to having fun ^u^ I hope it keeps me motivated and learning new things too. Keep telling yourself you're awesome and keep drawing for the fun of it!

honestly speaking, i think your proportions are okay as far as hands, head, and thighs go, i mean the guys are.........well they're guys, they're gonna have big thighs anyway with all that running and fighting they do, just keep the hips narrow and the thighs will follow, i usually reference live human models for my turtle anatomy..............then i have to take a cold shower afterwards, lmao

as for hands, remember, the hand is big enough to cover the face, i use my own hands as a reference ALOT when i need to draw fists, open hands, typing hands, holding hands, hands holding objects, etc.

Heads, it's easy to mess up on the head, this is why i keep a ruler with me, a head size when drawing it is about an inch in size. then when i get to the neck and shoulders, the shoulders are about 1/4 of an inch of space between the head and shoulder.  Again I reference alot of Live models, and read alot of how to draw books for comics and Anime, cuz that's what My style is, a mix of shoujo style anime and american comic "realism"

bottom line though, everything else you're doing looks right to me, i took art classes and graphic design and i've been drawing for 18 years starting with animals then moving to humans, then cartoons and Anime, especially Ninja turtles.  So in my Semi-professional opinion, you're doing fine, just more practice practice practice and practice will polish your drawing rocks into Diamonds

Thank you for all the tips! I didn't mean my journal to sound so troubled(ノ 'д';)  It was meant more as a memo of things I need to watch out for as I draw. I should have mentioned that I am aiming for a very specific style too - the 2003 animated series style that is.

I think most of issues I have with drawing turtles are actually derivative of my classical human drawings. I have been drawing from model quite a bit, and I'm confident in my realistic drawing skills. But the 2003 Turtles style is over the top, I mean everybody is huge in this series (just look at Hun!). At first I think I tried to compensate the super wide shoulder style by bloating up head size (to make it that natural size you mentioned). But those rules don't apply within this style. The shoulders in this series are three heads wide (and more with some characters)!

It's nice to know I have a fellow artist looking out for me! And chatting about these things is pretty fun and useful too :)

Every artist is their own worst critic! You're great the way you are now!
