IB Downloader

Hello Fuzzybutts!

As some of you may be aware, IB has implemented their changes which adds caching for their images. This is great for site loading, and downloads. So after some work, and talks with the staff, I have a new version coming soon that will play nicely with the new changes.

I ask that when it gets released, that you update asap. The reasons are technical, but for the sake of site performance and such I'd ask that you please get the new version. Basically the old version doesn't use the caches at all. The old versions may continue to work, or we may block them. I don't know for sure.

I'm expecting, if I can get off my lazy butt, to have the new version out before the weekend. I've tested a beta, and it all seems to be working fine so far. I can see it's pulling the correct cache links instead of the main site. That means that it's pretty much all done, just want to get a few more tweaks in before I release it publicly.

If you find that the current or older versions no longer work correctly, be patient until the new release.

It's almost funny that my last run of the program was less than 24 hours before the caching update.

That's great news! Thanks for taking the time to update along with us. :-)

There's no pressing need on our end to stop old versions from working - in fact, they have a lower potential impact now that most files are delivered via the caches and traffic is lower, as a recent user demonstrated. However, many users will benefit from cache use, depending on what they are downloading.

You can use a downloader account to specify a different cache. If, for example, you regularly download "old" files, you might target the Netherlands cache even though you are in the USA, as it has a complete backup of all original files, while the U.S. cache can only store around 50,000 originals and will have to get others from the main server. If you're more interested in newer files or popular users, it's best to leave it on auto.
