Why the hate for 3D?

I'm just curious, since I see so many people saying, "Good riddance on the 3D" in many comments about the 2DS, and other people claiming that nobody they know leaves the 3D on, how many people here with a 3DS play with the 3D on?  Anybody like a 3DTV or a 3D movie?

Personally I don't know how people play the 3DS with the 3D off! The system tries to 'smooth' the graphics out with the 3D off and really just manages to make things look blurry as hell to me.  The 3D keeps things looking sharp and I enjoy the added depth.

I'm probably among a minority for actually liking and enjoying 3D, even over long periods of time, but ah well.  Just sorta curious what my watchers think of 3D, if I'm really as weird as I think I am, or not.  :P

I don't seem to notice that too much either.  Only time I'm even tempted to turn off the 3D is when a game asks me to use tilt controls, but even then I don't always bother since I can usually just move my head with the system pretty well.  XD;  I feel weirder by the minute.

I personally like the 3D. I don't always play with it on though cause it often gets me lost and distracted in the world its showing x3

Fair enough.  :P  I don't tend to get lost/distracted in game too easily like that myself...though that's probably because my ADHD gets me lost/distracted in eeevvverrryyyttthhiiinnggg, so nothing really stands out in that regards lol  :P

Well, I honestly bought a 3ds for the games, not the actual 3d feature

Besides,  few games actually make 3d to be a key factor, while it provides a fun experience, it doesn't really can mean the difference between wining in a game or not

So far only on star fox 64 and a few battles on dream team have actually provided advantage to play on 3d

I bought my 3DS for the games too, knowing OOT 3D was on the way was what had me actually buy it near launch.  (Ambassador ftw lol)  Anyways, it was never going to be a key factor, though it does prove itself useful in games like Super Mario 3D Land.  I do like the effect though, in the way that many other special effects or filters aren't necessarily key factors, but look cool none the less.

I used the 3D a little bit, but its novelty wore off.  It doesn't add much to Mario Kart 7, and other than the bonus rooms, it doesn't add much to Super Mario 3D Land, either.  And because games have to be playable with the 3D turned off, all it will ever be is a novelty that really can't be made a core function of the game.

Also, I highly resent your Ambassador status because you get access to the GBA Mario Kart that Nintendo has gleefully withheld from its other 3DS customers for two years now.

Ah sorry  XD;  I'd give you the GBA Mario Kart if I could lol.  And yeah, it is just a novelty that will never be a core function of the game.  It's really hard to make 3D a core function of a game, given that it's optional and not everyone can see in 3D.  I just find it curious how many people like to get worked up over 3D being horrible or an awful gimmick given it's optional. (And even more hilarious how many of the same people seem to want smart TV's despite a Roku or *insert console here* giving their dumb TV the same options)

I kind of hate the 3D fad in general.  I think it's a lot of wasted money and resources for a stupid gimmick.  But I don't really care about it too much.

As for Mario Kart, the GBA one is the only game in the series that I don't own in some form.  SMK and MK64 I have on the Wii VC, Double Dash, Wii, DS, and 7 I own as physical copies.  Super Circuit is the only one I've never owned, and I've been holding out hope that Nintendo would open the GBA Virtual Console games to the general public, but they've been restricted to those Ambassadors since that program was created, and I have no idea why.  It's been two years, Nintendo, I think it's safe to throw the rest of us a bone.

I hate most fads in general, but I do kinda like 3D effects myself so I'll admit to being part of that fad, seeing 3d movies, owning a 3DS, and just recently bought a 3D television...though I need to get myself some content for it other than Sonic Generations on PS3 lol

HIPSTER EDIT:  Oh, and I might say I've been playing 3D games since before it was cool, being a proud owner of a Virtual Boy. (Which FYI has one of the greatest Wario Land games ever made, that nooobody ever gets to play lol)

As for the Ambassador thing, I wouldn't mind if they went and released the GBA games out myself, but as a whole the other "ambassadors" might not be so happy to see their promised "exclusive" going to others without compensation.  Honestly I'm shocked they haven't tried to commercialize the Ambassador system especially with the Wii U price drop.  Offer "Ambassadors" of either console early downloads of games a few weeks before they hit the general populace.  Would really drive up early sales of any new consoles they produced and cost them little to nothing to implement.

I rented a VB back in the day, so I'm right with you. :P  Never played any Wario Land games, though.

Anyway, it's been two years, I don't think Ambassadors have any right to complain if Nintendo offers the GBA VC games to the masses.  They've had them exclusive for two years.  The rest of us have been out in the cold.  Two years is long enough, I think.

I can never have the 3D on; I'm so fidgety and move around so much that I'm always getting a blurry view. And even if I have the screen set juuust right, I get dizzy with it on - even with Animal Crossing. XP

I'm surprised I don't have this issue, given I dun't like to sit still myself...despite spending 99% of my time sitting  XD;

That popular post has been goin' around - I think most people use the 3D, but I'd think less than half turn it off either because it doesn't work great or it doesn't work for their eyes anyway.

But I love it and use it a lot. I always got a headache from lookin' at tiny flat screens but with the 3DS it's great - I think the illusion of depth makes my eyes feel like they're not just staring at something flat all day. 8D

Hehe, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people turn it off, given everyones eyes are different, but I'd also assume a lot of people leave it on because it is a cool effect.  That extra depth helps make it feel like the screens not so flat, also improves the field of view (Like you can actually sorta see beyond the edge of the screen) which is somewhat beneficial to most games, as it lets you see more of the action at one time.

Lucky you, I'm on the fence about purchasing a dev unit myself, though I really want to wait for the HD production units, I love the idea of a device that nearly completely fills my field of vision.

that 2ds is more of a joke then anything anyways X3 it's better to play the 3ds X3, though i leave my 3d off most the time less complicated in trying to find the balance that my eyes like for the 3d feature.
Cyberblade
10 years, 7 months ago
I wouldn't call the 2DS a joke really.  I'd call it one of Nintendo's most brilliant marketing schemes ever.  "Lets release a 2DS for children, without a breakable hinge, on the exact same day Pokemon comes out, for exactly the cost of a 3DS game less than a 3DS.  Parents will go for it so they can shut up their kid without breaking the bank in the same way of a normal system, and the kids will grow older and want the more "mature" folding console later and will buy it too."  Nintendo has their market preeetttyy well pegged I think. lol

XD  I actually have no issue finding a balance for my eyes and the 3D feature, since I pretty much ignore any middle value of the slider.  100% or 0%, one or the other.  There are actually some times I want to make the 3D even stronger, but oh well, hardware limits lol

and not only that 2ds, that doesn't fold so it's unprotected you need to put it in a case that is still sold separate, then on the pokemon subject they wan't you to get a pokemon bank that can store 3000 pokemon but you'll have to pay a yearly fee to keep the storage, >.< and you have to get the bank in order to get transfer your old pokemon from b/w, b/w2 onto x and y >.<. and the 2 ds really looks too bulky to hand and play all the time.

I have it completely off because I have a bit of an astigmatism. If I use it, I begin to get immense headaches from just a few minutes of viewing the 3D effect.

Fair enuff, medical reasons are a good reason to avoid things like that  :P  Plus headaches suck.

it doesn't do anything to make games better (it's just "graphics" which i already don't care about

and it hurts me
Cyberblade
10 years, 7 months ago
Well, can't argue with "it hurts me" but the 3D does do some things for some games.  Makes judging distances in platform games easier, and due to the way the screen shows depth it actually allows you to see slightly beyond the natural edge of the screen, allowing you to see more of the action at one time.  I can see ways 3D can make some games better, but it's obviously not a necessity.  Of course, all a moot point if it hurts lol

I actually can see it helping somewhat with first-person platforming in particular. I hadn't thought of that.

I don't own a 3DS, but I do have a program on my laptop that lets me play some of my games in 3D with those oldschool Red/Cyan glasses. If it doesn't slow my cheep system too much or cause any glitches, then I refuse to play my games any other way! And if I did have a 3DTV and a better PC, I'd play pretty much all my games in 3D!

...Well, unless they use OpenGL or D3D 7 and earlier.

Personally, I love 3D gaming. On console. The 3D on the 3DS is meant for stationary play, which, in my opinion, defeats most of the point in portables. Not only that, I prefer longevity; I was a little disappointed with the battery life on the 3DS (I didn't upgrade from the original DS until a year after the 3DS release), and the 3DS has a max, even on it's lowest setting, 4-5 hours. A good amount, but since I use it a lot, not high enough for my taste. Especially since, "minimum setting," means, "can't see shit," means I get 2 hours max. And, to be honest, I don't use the 3D function since I'm either on the go, or would rather have my Vita, or a book. I also think the 2DS is stupid. Having a 3D option is awesome, even if I don't use it most times. But taking it away, along with the ability to fold, feels... bad.

Actually I use the 3D as a gaming experience. When a game comes out I try it first in 3D and then after I get tired and go back to 2D.

Otherwise I vien to the oculus for a total rift in full contact next PC gameplay.

i have a 3DSxl but i can only use the 3d for a certain amount of time i like it when the game gets it right but 90% of the time i find that the games don't use it properly that and after about 5 minutes of 3d play i start feeling sick in the stomach from motion sickness

I really enjou 3d movies, but i do leave 3d off in my 3ds most of the time.  I can see ghosts of both images amd i end uomwith a headache the size of China in about ten minutes flat.  (Ive seen the ghosting on all 7 3ds units that ive used/had)

I love the 3d but sometimes I play without it.
Depends on my mood :3
Also people that don't like it can just turn it off :I
Honestly I think the 2ds should be cheaper than it is because a 3ds without 3d
is pretty much the same than a old ds o.o

The 3D is always on for me. Not everybody can see 3D the same way and it can give people headaches and whatnot.

Mostly because 3D is more harmful than helpful, plus on the 3DS, it forced you to hold it strait and even games with gyro controls were impossible to play with 3D on.

The 3D on my 3DS hurts my eyes. They're slightly crossed, and my perception is slightly off, so I'm not exactly the ideal person to be using 3D gimmicks anyway.

I love the system but I never play with the 3D on. I tried it when I got it at launch and it was convincing for the five minutes it didn't hurt my eyes.

The new system doesn't fold though and that is less appealing to me than the 3D. :V
