Rant about colors

by
this is entirely an aritst perspective.

there are 2 colors that are really hard to shade.Blues and dark blacks.  You cant shade black, only lighten it, which means you deprive 50% of the shading power.  Blue is almost equally bad, if you have tried to shade this, yeah...so just note to ppl...avoid deep blacks and solid blues....

ps- black and red are AWESOME together...so if you want a black character, red highlights make it pop 3d srsly

thats why i never use true blacks, i always make it a really dark off-grey, i just throw a little bit of color in there to make it not a true black, then i shade over top of it. ive never had a problem with dark blue :P

On a similiar subject, i used to have alot of trouble with multiple white characters in 1 picture. i use the same technique to seperate them, but while still making them look white.

here is an example

yeah...but you get a lot of characters wanting jet black, and you show them flat colors as proof and there like thats not my color, ignore, and thats really what i have to do...it seems, then shade, and oh looks wunnerful

cobalt blue I think is the worst to shade

Use 90% black for your "blacks" You can shade a bit on that... it takes a little finesse, but it's possible. Of course, in the same respect, white is very hard to highlight... :D

pshaw..i always do offwhite when coloring those.  off black doesnt look any different tho, you have to go kinda high on gradient to get any noticeable different with black, like 20%, compared to 5-10% of white

I usually just use 90%, and shade with 100... all you need is a subtle change to show the shading, the highlighting should take care of the rest.

Urgggh. I've heard it's better to shade with the opposite color...but IDK. Those two colors ARE especially hard.

my blue hair is light enough to start with, and there really is such a thing as blue-black hair.  if I were truly sadistic, I'd go blue-black hair, black patent leather, and I wanna see the difference.

So you are telling me that to challenge you and help you expand your artistic capabilities I should make a set of characters who have the colours (in proportion) of the leather pride flag and then want them properly shaded and for each one to look different?  <evil grin>
