Hunter x Hunter

Anybody else watching this series?  The reboot, not the original.  I've been marathoning most of it and I'm about to catch up to its current episode.  I really enjoyed the first few arcs with some annoyances here and there.  Then there was the Greed Island arc that was pretty 'meh' up until the end.  Now there's the Chimera Ant arc and this whole thing reeks of bullshit to me...

I never watched the original, but I've been keeping up with the new series for a couple years.  I really like it.  What don't you like about the current arc?

Lots of reasons, really.

1) Death, death, death, killing, killing, killing.  Just a nonstop focus on it.  It's depressing.  And let's reintroduce two previously established characters only to ruthlessly murder them.  Oh, and every enemy is conveniently an ultra sadist.  Wonderful.

2) Automatically strong enemies.  They're all born with the ability to understand language, read books, and the power of Nen just falls into their laps along with the ability to control it.  Even Gon and Killua's current mastery of it was considered fast, but these guys just auto-gain it because of what, nature?  And the rest get it just by being punched around?  That's kind of bullshit right there.  The super powerful cat chick who has ultimate power doesn't even get a reason why she's like that, other than "You're a royal guard, so here, have a bunch of power and stuff".  Also, I guess every animal in the world exists in that one country to produce the variety of enemies they have through phagogenesis.  Oh, and they're born with a full set of human clothing on.  Wut.

3) This arc feels completely unnecessary for the main story.  Couldn't they at least have said "Ging went in this direction" at one point so we have a reason to look forward to them going there other than to waste their time and stop an unrelated threat?

Anyway, there are other smaller issues that permeate, but those are some of the larger ones.  I think we're seeing around the time the manga author's health started degenerating and he kept putting the manga on hiatus repeatedly.  It's like he woke up from a coma and the producers said "He's awake!  Hurry, write something!  More Hunter x Hunter!" and he just went "All right, fine.  Ants.  People die.  Power up.  Give 'em Nen.  Okay, there.  Happy now, fuckers?"

Fair enough. At least it's almost over.  Maybe once we finally figure out what happened to Kite (and get the inevitable fight out of the way) they'll get back on track to finding Ging.

Or we could have another arc with Killua's family, which would be great because they've been teasing that so much.  Or they could follow up on Chrollo and the Nen Exorcist, and subsequently Hisoka.

The problem is this manga's not even finished after I think a decade.  The author continuously puts it on hiatus, hence the nickname Hiatus x Hiatus.  From what I hear, there's only one more arc complete after this one and I don't think it's even revisited the Phantom Troupe at all.  I disliked all the blatant "look how evil we are by murdering thousands of people" crap with them, but at least they served their purpose with an important story line and their situations ended up being unpredictable.

After that, though, I have no idea what they're going to do with the series.  I get the feeling it's going to have a made up ending just for the animation.

Well if they really wanted to make it great, they could get other writers to flesh out future story arcs.  It's not like there's a shortage of material, they have a very well developed world at this point with lots of characters.  I'm sure the studio making the show technically has creative control over it. They don't have to stick to the manga.  And that could potentially go really well or really horribly.
