Friendship is Magic: Fan-animations or fan episodes

You can read more here: http://www.equestriaforums.com/index.php/topic,601.0.html

In short, I've talked a bit with Eyrie and a few other animators. I want to assemble a team. I see that someone is trying to as well, but I'm not interested in applications or "proof" of abilities and I'm really not interested in not using all of my talents completely.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDaiPPo6E-s&feature...

I didn't apply because I haven't seen any proof from that group that they have the talent to back up wanting applications from people to prove our talents and worth and so on.

But, basically, if anyone was thinking about that, I always prefer a more informal discussion and discourse with the fandom. I prefer to make friends first and work second. If a team doesn't get along, then it's not much of a team at all.

As far as rating, I'd top it off at PG up until age 10 because I have an adorable little sister and if I'm animating ponies in Flash CS4, there's not a chance in hell she's not all over that.

I could do the writing. Art-wise, I don't have Flash CS4, and I forgot how well it worked on this computer.

I have contact information on my page.

Writers and concept artists and music composers and sound FX people and background artists all would not need Flash.

Oh, Flash would mostly be necessary for animators: sharing FLAs and all that. The project manager is usually in charge of condensing scene FLAs into one larger file... which is why I picked five minutes. I forget how many frames that is, but it's quite a bit of running time in terms of sheer animation.

For process, there is the script first and modelsheets and concept art. We're not limited to canon interpretations, and I have issue with how the eyes are usually played in relation to the nose on the ponies in G4 sometimes. The hardest part is having to eliminate people's unique style when a scene needs to be consistent. =(

After that comes the voiceactors, and I'm really super good with lip-syncing. I basically was given The Animator's Survival Guide when I was 13 and studied that thing like my personal damn bible. When it comes to squash and stretch, the whip effect, and not being afraid to stylize, I had a lot of fun learning how to animate. It tends to look like this before being finalized: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/212636

For animation, we'll need decent-looking backgrounds and also the animatics prior to animating "for reals". Then we need keyframing and tweening can wait until coloring and inking portions are done. Shading will be minimal for headache reasons.

Then there's the tweak, polish, and fix phase where you watch the product with a mix of pride and annoyance at having to go back and fix some minor thing and watch the whole thing all over again... haha. But the final result is definitely worth the effort.

24 FPS x 60 x 5 = 7,200 frames. I only assume it'd be 24.

30 FPS = NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND!!!!

Sounds good. If that's the case, then I could work on some concept art or storyboarding if needed. My wheelhouse, however, is in writing.

Yeah, it's a bit of work. If we slip past the Season 2 start, that's still okay.

I really do hope this thing takes off.

I am still interested in helping out, but that'll be irrelevant if I don't have any free time outside of my current pony related project and commissions! (commissions being my literal only source of income) I'll see if I can figure something out in the coming weeks.

I also saw that youtube vid and raised an eyebrow..there were no examples of anyone on board with any of the required skills..just seemed like some guy going 'it'd be cool if..'

regardless, this is going to be greatness, and I wish you the best of luck!

I understand the crunch of commissions better than you think. If you ever find someone that wants to hire two artists, let me know. I can finalize one of your pieces for you with coloring and shading and so forth.

I've found it necessary to tell my project manager to back off lately and let me enjoy art or I will just quit everything completely if I don't like it. Work is work, but I still have my job too and freelancing on top of it is a major headache when no one takes the time I spend drawing seriously.

Oh thank you, you hit all the criticisms I felt on that little youtube group was lacking. Building the entire team from ground-up is very unlikely to get you anyone good interested in the project if you have no proof that the talent will be rewarded and that their time is being well spent.

Sadly I only have the most basic idea of animating in flash as I've done a couple but my skills are awful and could use improvement. My specialty I would feel would actually be in writing character consistency. I'm an idea guy, but I'm much more focused on making sure the characters I've fallen in love with are actually the characters being portrayed, so I'd love to help out as far as that is concerned.

Haha, ideas guy. There's a little meme with a hipster-looking game developer and it goes:

I WILL PAY YOU
[smug look]
IN HOPES AND DREAMS

So true. D=

I don't plan on funding this project with anything other than my own blood, sweat, tears, and time.
jakeheritagu

Haha, its so true too XD

I never mentioned anything about funds though, as I would gladly work on a magnificent project of this statue for free! I would want nothing more then to see an amazing product come out of it and to give my aid in making that come true as best as I could. A tough task when I know my skills aren't as great as yourself or others, but I would want to give my very essence into making sure it turned out magnificent.

I felt that way too when I was younger but as I got older and had to pay my own way, suddenly commissions didn't look so bad after all. =(

I still have a certain limit I won't cross: I won't try to erase all my art and start a paysite for old content. That's not cool. If I was going to sell something, I would sell a complete game or a complete animation.

People are going to pirate it anyway. They either don't care or they didn't have the money in the first place or they didn't want to pay through a site. And that's fine. There's no sense in fighting the inevitable. It's a losing proposition either way. That's probably why Zone "leaks" the flash first before anyone else does. >_>

Very very respectable. I currently work a job in order to save up my own funds as best I can, so I can certainly empathize with the plights of the poor artists who need the money and I would love if  I could have all the money in the world so that I could share it with all the artists who are so damned deserving of it. But personal matters do come first unfortunately, but if I can help with donations in the future I'd also do that.

...Wait, did I just offer to pay you to let me work on a project? I am such a Brony.
ButtercupSaiyan
12 years, 11 months ago
Ahahaha, it's more like I would be paying people, if anything, even if it was just splitting donation money.

I'm not exactly poor, but my credit was ruined by my ex-fiance using a shared bank account. I was young, I was stupid. Not doing that again, especially not in the name of "love" aka "if you really loved me."

So what sort of job do you do ordinarily?
jakeheritagu

Minimum wage Amusement Park food services. Seasonal as well so I only get so-many-hours when its not busy. I'm mostly doing it for the job experience at the moment and hoping to find better work soon enough, though I do enjoy my job.

And my credit got ruined when I bailed out one of my parents for an emergency surgery that they said they would pay me back for, and a year later the amount I owed had doubled from no payments. It's paid off now, but I still gotta fix my credit as well, so I certainly understand where you're coming from.

I have enough money for my needs as it is right now, and I love the MLP series enough that I'd graciously work on it for free, even if we got donations. I certainly don't expect to get paid for doing something I love, but if offered I wouldn't turn it down either. Even if my involvement is minimal, I just want to see this be the most awesome thing ever!

Oh, ouch. I worked Food Services in Cypress Gardens for three years and I was miserable. My current job might be minimum wage, but that's what I was making there and I'm much happier now. I was neither surprised nor sad to see Cypress Gardens Adventure Park shut down and get turned into Lego Land.

I have all kinds of stories, but basically, I hate the small-minded bitterness and backstabbing shit that goes on to try to make yourself look good by making others look bad. That simply doesn't happen at the college. If someone does something wrong, they answer to one supervisor... not four who all have different policies and rules. Ugh!

Yeah, in my case, Josh was using my wage to pay off his debt and car insurance and led me in with such lovely lines as, "But it's OUR money" and "I don't have a problem sharing my money with you." Ha! Not making that mistake again. This time, I'll just pay it out of pocket or give a loan with no expectation of repayment, not unlimited access to my bank account. There's trust but then there's common fucking sense... something I didn't have at 16 when he was 21... heh. I was stubborn and I refused to listen to reason. Well, lesson learned.

Anyway, I'd be happy to have you on. You'd be surprised how many little jobs there are: whether it's maintenance of a web-space, scheduling, gathering sound effects and cleaning the audio in Audacity, or helping on the script and timing of animation, there's a ton of tasks in a project to be done and never enough time, haha.
jakeheritagu

Oddly enough I don't really feel that kind of backstabbing nature where I work. Everyone is REALLY friendly to each other and we have people of all ages, teens to elderly working there, so its a good mix of personalities and all the shift-leads and managers are super friendly too. So I've really been able to appreciate at least having a job, and its tons better then my previous job as a Cart Pusher for Walmart. Miserable job that was in comparison.

And yea, there's a lot of stupid bullshit that happens in relationships that you won't realize till well after its happened, and I'm sorry to hear you got roped into stuff like that, but also am happy to hear that you're able to stand on your own feet now and realize what is for the best without alienating yourself from the idea of love.

But I will give this project my all, no matter what it is. I'll help out with a web site if I'm able (I have basic HTML and look up tutorials on things I don't understand), scheduling (figuring out what kind of schedule people have and knowing when they can help out? Sounds good~), sound effects I can always help find (Google is a go!) and cleaning up stuff in Audacity I can figure out with a quick tutorial and a bit of practice, but I've already had practice mixing and cleaning audio so that helps too. And I'd love to help with the script, I love writing! and as I said I'd want to have my focus being on making sure we're writing the characters from the show and now our perceptions of the characters from the show. So that way everyone can enjoy their favorite pony as their favorite pony! Sadly I don't know much about animation timing (my animation experience didn't use it but I'd love to learn more).

Anything else I'm also game for. I'll send ya a note of my contact information~

Actually, a nerdy fan would be nice for a script. If you find any short but really solid fanfics, let me know so I can e-mail the author.

Even though I'm sure most fanfiction authors would explode if someone said "I want to animate your short story with voice actors!" ... lol.

I made a thread, but the reaction is mostly "meh" until I actually do something. http://www.equestriaforums.com/index.php/topic,601.0.html

I could do writing, voice acting, and music... I can draw and paint in the MLPFM art style fairly well, but I'm sure there are people better at it than I am.
ButtercupSaiyan
12 years, 11 months ago
Ah, yes, I saw your concept art of the squirrel girl. The lines are very clean, probably cleaner than I'd manage outside of Flash on paper *lol*

As for paint, it's not really easy to do animation with cel-painting over the Internet for collaborations, haha.
ShadowsInc
12 years, 11 months ago
Really? I thought the lines were kind of sketchy... I kind of had to rush to get those character turnarounds done. I think the lines in my "Random Tentacles" submission are a little cleaner, but I still did that one kind of fast... I messed up in quite a few spots. I have a lot of stuff that has really clean lines, but it's not anything I can upload to Ink Bunny though.

Static painting is fine though right? Like backgrounds?
ButtercupSaiyan
12 years, 11 months ago
Yeah. I think that the backgrounds in the show are done entirely in Flash, and I usually do my backgrounds as digital paintings in Photoshop and animate them in Photoshop on layers (frame 1, frame 2, frame 5-10, etc) if I need to.
ShadowsInc
12 years, 11 months ago
Well the whole show is Vectorized... and doing vectors in Photoshop is kind of a pain, while it is really easy in Flash.
ButtercupSaiyan
12 years, 11 months ago
Yeah, certainly. I don't do vector lineart all the time though, especially for regular fanart. Flash can be oddly clunky and its tablet pressure leaves something to be desired. Pushing "[" and "]" to resize the brush also annoys me when it doesn't work in Flash.

sounds great! you certainly have the talent. Am a little sad you won't be using all your talents completely, but looking forward to whatever epicness that comes of this.
ButtercupSaiyan
12 years, 11 months ago
Oh, I fully plan to use all my talents.

It's not those BronyToons people ever e-mailed me back and I'm not holding my breath for them, either. I will start the project of my own initiative. I think Eyrie's pretty interested in working closely with me too. We've been doing some, you know, cheesecake porn fanart but that's not all we're capable of.

Part of the reason is... on Bliss Stage, I'm just the sprite artist for now and I wanna animate.
