Question to Artists : Would a multi-site upload tool help you?

by
As the title says. I noticed that...*growls*...some artists post a nearly 100% of art on FA while only a small portion of that goes on InkBunny.  I understand that it's a hassle to uload a lot of art, comment, tag, title, and rate it. That's why I only post my art on IB.  But it's discouraging to see artists post so little to IB. So I thought it might help the situation if there was a simple tool that let you quickly set up a bunch of images and upload them to multiple sites with the click of a button.

I could also build in an easy cropping utility, maybe even get it to read PSDs with the right dll and library. So using it would be a simple matter of just dragging a bunch of images into it, cropping them (optional, for making thumbnails), filling it the details, and hitting a button to upload. And of course the 'cub' tag would disable uploading for sites that you choose.

I'm willing to make this thing work for every furry art site out there.  My goal is to break this thing about uploading being a hassle, and make it easier to choose a site based on the social vibe rather than traffic.  So, would you guys like a tool like this? Would it be useful?

A lot of sites don't want tools like that. FA for one does not support or encourage such tools. IB is one of the few sites that offers an API for the creation of tools, and actually encourages things like this.

*chuckles* FA doesn't encourage a lot of things. It would be better if things were a lil more fluid.

Ambitious idea there Looq.  Something certainly worth exploring at the very least, but as Mr. Cabbit mentioned, some sites don't like API access that much.

Well FA doesn't even have an API, but that certainly doesn't make it impossible :)

I think that it would be a great tool to assist multiple site uploads. I would certainly use it and maybe with such a tool to artists it would break the stronghold sites such as Y and FA seem to have.

I'm not an artist but I do upload commissions to multiple sites to help give the artist exposure (I'm thinking of posting only previews in the future though just so people will favorite the original). But yeah, I 100 percent support such a utility.

I'd like to see such strongholds broken too. Such sites went from "i use it because it's all that exists" to "i use it because everybody else does".

I wouldn't mind posting art where shota is mixed with furry, but the only reason I don't draw such things is because of the sites. The only one that would support it is rather clunky and seems more geared toward hentai anyway (hentaifoundry). And (hopefully not) the only site to support shota is Y! gallery which is intolerant to furry and has some ridiculous rules.

Anyway, it would be nice to have one place to just post every type of art. Since that doesn't exist, that's kind of the idea behind this multi-site tool. To kind of bind it all together in a way.

Don't Weasyl and SoFurry allow human/furries together?

I suppose it would, yes. Though sometimes I need to change upload descriptions where perhaps the BBCode, or other things need to be changed if they're not allowed to be uploaded, but I can throw a censored version up. But generally, it would be nice.

Hmm.. I could make a "general" comment box, then have a copy of it in other tabs labelled "IB", "FA", and so forth. Changing things in those other tabs would only apply changes to the comment uploaded to that one site, not the others.

As for the BBCode, I could have some tools in the program for that. It could omit unsupported features for specific sites or change the syntax used to represent the code.  Maybe even watch for certain keywords in the comments so you don't say things that might get the admins steamed XD.

I was going to suggest both of those, but I didn't know if you could implement them. Good to know you could. :3

All the ratchet stuff I would not post on my FA goes to Inkbunny.
Whippy
5 years, 3 months ago
But you don't upload anything else to InkBunny?
DarkGhz

I post some stuff but not all of it mostly because I made my IB after I was on FA for a bit.

Ah okay. There is a tool to migrate from FA to IB. It's called FA2IB: http://fa2ib.welcomefur.com/

I am not a fan of FA because of their policies, however, I think that a tool such as yours would help the Furry community as a whole and help curb the competition between the different servers, however, to really be fair, you would need to hit more than just the top three hosts.  For example: we know about FA, IB, and Weasel, but don't forget Furnation, VCL, SoFurry, and CubCentral.

Also to curb the competitive nature of the beast, the tool should include the ability to post a journal entry to all of the selected sites.

... The only problem I foresee is that you usually make programs in Autohotkey, which is great for doing big things in Windows, but other OS users would not be able to use the program.  Perhaps, could you make this one in Java so that it can be ran from almost any computer?

Ah, you got me there XD. I'm not really a fan of java. The programs usually have a standard look to them, but usually feel kind of bloated. Plus, I'm not sure how many people would be willing to install Java with all the security scare stuff that went on with it. I think it's just a matter of not having a plugin for java on your browser though.

Oh, and I haven't forgotten SoFurry or the others ^^ Hey! Idea! It might be handy to have certain areas in the uploader that you can drag images to. Such as one half for cub the other for furry, or maybe a third area for human stuff.  So it would be like "all these are OK with furry, all of these are okay with cub, and so on.

Hey looq, what do you code in? im fluent in 3 programming languages, and can stitch together (with loads of docs) a well functioning program in at least 8 languages.
Budi

Except Java. I can code in java, but i absolutely hate it. Screw you Android SDK especially! >.<

LOL! I code in AuotHotKey for now. It's an interpreted script. So, it's limited to Windows. One of these days I gotta get into C++. Being restricted drives me crazy sometimes, but it's also very fast and easy to whip up a GUI or a little tool to do exactly what I need in AHK. If you have any good suggestions on which programming language to choose or any good books on C++, I'd love to hear meep ^^

At first I thought that you were asking if a tool already exsits. Now I am hearing that you want to create this?

FIRST: If you do create this tool. More power to you, though you do want to heed to the warnings of each sites TOS and ULP (Upload policy?)

SECOND: Sites constantly come and go and with that being said, what you create today may not hold water tomarrow. In other words I advise to have at least a small team willing to work with the code to keep it up to date. Possibly even go open sourse.

And finally. O.o how do you plan to code this (language) and how are you planing to market this (not sell but get it out to the public to use it)?

1. Heh, the only policy that seems to matter these days are cub and human characters. With Y! gallery...they are complete retards...so it would be a headache to try and follow all of their's.  The way I think about it, it would be more like pools. Sites that are okay with cub go in one pool that you'll be able to drag images into. I think being able to create custom pools would be a good idea too. I'm imaging boxes inside of a window that you would drag images into.

2.Hmm...that would be a problem. I don't work with anybody else because nobody I know uses my programming language :/  I could make it opensource however.

3. I usually make everything using AutoHotKey scripting language. To put it out there, I guess I'd just put it up on my dropbox and mention it in a journal on each site. Maybe talk to a few artists that might be interested.

I could learn AHK if you would link me some docs or something. im sure i could get something running in an hour or two :)

All programming languages get to be the same after you learn so many.. Code structure is usually all the same, but syntax is all you need to learn really.

I code mainly for nix based systems, but i have plenty of knowledge on coding for Iphone, Mac, and windows as well. so any operating system is not a problem for me.
RedReynart

True, though with draging and droping, well no matter how you have it. Again sometimes the person would drag over the wrong version. Be sure to have a safety notice or something :P

and AHK hmm interesting, I know C# and Java. as Budi said. Language becomes pretty standarized in the logic.

PS: How do you plan to distribute your tool? O.o Obviously the program will be either embedded in a website or be an exe or app.
=O I say even an app version would be an interesting though because any one that frequents furry cons could instantly upload their pics durring and at the con.
Whippy
5 years, 3 months ago
It would be distributed as an exe mainly because I have yet to code anything for a phone yet, or know how XD I understand the ease of it though. Sounds like a nice idea ^^ Oh and yes a safety notice would be a must for uploading to multiple sites ^///^

It is relitivly easier to distribute to the phone market with Microsoft and Google. Apple is a bigger headache but not impossible. I can always help you out to get your product on the markets.

As for the process of going though and making a port to these devices, there are the easy way, then the hard way. O.o coding from scractch you will be going about it the hard way. As odd as this sounds, have you ever though of using a game engine to create a program? With an application which you speak, you want a 2d simple program, hence a 2d game engine. Gamemaker is an excellent tool for this. And allot of the porting to other platforms is as easy as changing a few properties.

Unity and UDK can also take the guess work out of making ports for games with the tools they include. <.< Im just tossing this out there. Other wise there are a few lines of code you need to add yourself to port out..Which I am not sure entirely with AHK but can do with C#

i dunno if it would be usefull, i mean IB in a known site for furry cub porn, i think that keeps them away.
ofc, fa had that too in the past, but not as much as here.
