Given the Knight Statue that the giveaway Torchic comes with, I figure that there will be a held item for each type that allows them to enter their mega forms. The "storm" died down and now it's no longer slapped on every single thing out there (pokemon waffles spring to mind...) , but also keep in mind that the creators of the franchise know that this can't be like Call of duty: IE: they can't simply repackage the game ,call it something different, and expect people to buy it.
To do this, they have been maturing with the fans and trying new things.
Form changes, branching evolutions, gender specific evolutions, TMs no longer being 1 time uses, scaling EXP growth, insane breeding mechanics, legendaries being important to the storyline, all these things being brought out and refined through the years.
I loved this series since day one and am always excited to see the creators still have ways of utterly surprising us.

Hehe I'm another of these fans of the first days, and this lasted until my dad forbade me to watch this series because he saw the epileptic porygon case in the news lol Soo, I had to move to the game version to continue enjoying this world :p And, since then I enjoyed it and stuff, but sadly my heart broke after several generations, when I started to notice that the games needed so many extra stuff (other cartridges, consoles, cables, events, etc) to be completed. I'm super excited for some of them. Think the Mawile one looks really cool. Apparently an item called Blaziken Knight which will be held by the Torchic to be given away to players from October 12th to January 15th has something to do with them. Like Zapper, I figured it would be a mega if item is held, not mega if it isn't. I just hope it's not another bunch of trade evolutions.

Either that, or the mega forms will be totally OP - and the only way to stand up to one, is at a serious type advantage or also mega form'd xD. We'll see, we'll see.... It just seems like they're now doing to all 'mon of the previous five gens what Kyurem did to Zekrom/Reshiram, a FUSION HA!!! But now with X/Y's mascot legendaries. What is probably the major deciding factor - would be if it's a good business move or not.
Is this sort of change (which isn't entirely huge mind you, these aren't evolutions or fusion-ha - this is a hold item that makes them super mode I guess (or so it seems for now)) a fun one to redesign everything (appealing to the artists) and EVERYTHING even back from 1st gen (appealing to all past poke-fans) as well as being flashy, fun, and colorful (appealing to kids) and generally kinda bad ass (appealing to the older poke-fans). It's also an opportunity to balance the gaming mechanics (or totally fuck it up (if it was remotely balanced before)) for the gamers.
So, this is PROBABLY how an American company would be thinking about it - since profitable product is typically the main goal. However, Japan isn't quite as Americanized as far as business goes - and they've been known to just go with an idea, rather than manipulate it to make money - despite how harmful this can be to the company.

That being said, it kind of helps that I've distanced myself this much when thinking about Pokemon now. I feel like this is now like a reboot of the series that premiered 15 or so years ago. And when I think of it that way it seems like they're alright. Still not a big fan of the designs though! I feel like the farther you go in a series the more you have to "add onto" it. And I really feel like they kinda are just adding, rather, tacking on features and colors almost randomly. Okay maybe that's not fair, but I think there are ways that they could make nice additions to previous pokemon that look better than what we have now.

Well at least they're changing it up. It's what I expect them to do for a series that has lasted this long. I don't really get the people that say, "This isn't Pokemon." Then what is? Pokemon is at that point to where it's damned if you do, damned if you don't only because it's been around for quite some time. I've been following Pokemon since the 90's craze and I can say that Pokemon still feels like Pokemon to me. I'm not as hardcore as others may be for Pokemon games, but I typically enjoy each core entry. As long as the core Pokemon games stay within the RPG genre, it will still be Pokemon. People are just naturally resistant to change.

hypocrites like that need to stop playing pokémon IMHO. now I, like many other trainers, have my choice pics from each region, but to say the new stuff isn't the original and busting out the originals isn't new is a bunch of bullshit. I didn't like (and still don't like) the rotation battle concept, and I don't play it, but it isn't like I won't watch and learn. I fits a simple stats redistribution, and type change, i could vary battle styles ALOT. you already have faerie changing how people will have all dragon teams, giving some of the more popular types a new play style, will vary things, so you arn't fighting the same teams over and over

In any case, I typically prefer other artists' interpretations when it comes to Pokemon to be honest. Like, the originals are cool, but (especially for porn?!?) I like seeing more form and pushed characteristics, which other artists (yep, DA folk too) have done since forever.

I mean, design is often a personal sort of choice. Because you disagree with a design doesn't make it bad. Because I like a design, doesn't make it good. If it appeals to their audience, and succeeds in its purpose, then it works.
Of course, it could always appeal more, and it can always succeed more - so I'm never saying that these designs are PERFECT xD. Obviously there is gonna be some over-design here and there (which attracts kids), and there's gonna be some lack luster designs, (which, some pokemon are just meh, and there will be bigger fish to fry, it happens.)
The unfortunate thing about working for a company, is that they usually aren't as passionate of the subject as their fans. So having something be "passable" (as in "it'll sell") - rather than having something SPECTACULAR (as in, "I'm so proud of this creation") is really quite common.

My guess is that they'll be an end game thing. I've read that there will be other requirements to unlocking them beyond just the item, too. I'm also sure they'll be banned from competitive tournaments for the time being until enough are released that they can make a special tournament just for them.
For Torchic he'll only be available for a certain number of months, won't be tradable on the GTS, and the item he holds won't be available anywhere else. So while he'll be easy to get in that time, afterwards anyone who missed out is sol until they do another event.
I'm also interested to see what they do with these items when the generation after XY comes out since items aren't sent with pokemon that move to a new generation. Maybe these Mega forms will just be exclusive to the upcoming generation. Whatever the case it seems that if a player doesn't like the Mega forms they can simply elect not to equip the item on their pokemon and leave it at that.
