finally hit the RAM bottle neck

by
I built this computer with that underwater orgy picture in mind. I knew it would be huge....but damn. I just finished waiting for Photoshop to unfreeze for the last 5 minutes, it gobbled up every bit of RAM I had left and was hitting my hard drives. (I have 16gb btw)  But I also had a bunch of other things running which.. *looks at task manager*...took up about 5gb, so I only had about 11gb to work with. The image itself is insanely large at 14,000 x 14,000.

So, i could shrink the image OR buy more of this. It's like $40 more expensive than when I first bought it though >.<

Anyway, I'll try killing everything and see if that helps with Photoshop...
Edit:
I killed everything and resized the image to 12,000 x 8,000 and now Photoshop only uses 7gb so far with the same amount of layers and painting as I did before.  I guess I'll stick with this and see how it goes..

I believe merging layers should help.

I was only using 1 layer for the background and 1 multiply layer for each group (making 4 layers total). I'm going to try using the fewest I can get away with.

I'm not sure 24 or 32 gigs of RAM will help your problem; I think it's program related.

Probably. It's the only app I know so far that can handle big images.

Manga Studio 5 is 64-bit, or at least has a 64-bit version.

Oh yeah! I forgot about that one ^///^ I still haven't really used it yet. It's interface is ungodly cluttered, but the app itself looks very promising :)

Do you need it that big? Because that's really huge xD. Like, large print huge.

hehe! Well I probably don't need it "that" big. I mainly work on a 5,000 pixel canvas in SAI, so that's what I used to draw each group of characters. I just felt bad about shrinking them to fit on another canvas ^///^ So, it got pretty huge in photoshop.  I really hate being able to see jagged pixels in anything I make, it's like a phobia or a allergy XD

Naw, I hear you - see I'm always worried about how much time I'm spending on things. You can make things a bit sloppier if the end product is a bit smaller - think like impressionsim. That sorta thing xD

If the product is gonna be small in the end anyways, no point in working THAT huge xD!

Yeah, that's true ^^ I did put a bunch of time and detail into the drawings though, that's why I'm kinda loath to shrink it down. But with this memory thing that's gonna affect the whole process of painting the thing....yeah..I'll see how much I can stand shrinking it XD

use an SSD as a scratch for photoshop?

Nope, it's for my OS only. I have an external 1TB USB3 drive that I like to use for scratch space.

Your PS freezes for so long that you can write a journal of it...

Basically yes! LOL! I haven't experienced freezes like that since working on a 600dpi comic several years ago on a much less powerful system.
