Sony's Security Screwup

by
A lot of folks tell me that this security screwup will end Sony's user trust and ability to compete in the market place.

I'm holding in my hand a flash drive of compromised PMs and Password lists from Fur Affinity. (Most of the passwords should be outdated. I mean, You changed your passwords during the last security breach RIGHT?!)

The point is, Fur Affinity still has a strong user base.
Sony will continue to have a strong user base.

If folks cared about basic security, Fur Affinity would have been dead by now.

Oh, I don't mean to cheapen Sony's disaster by comparing it to simple furry porn passwords, But only to point out a rather sad part of human nature.

"Oh but it won't effect me."

Sony deals with people's actual names, addresses, and credit card info, to sell real products and services.  FA deals mainly with made-up alias names, to allow easy access to free art.  A small breach in security for Sony can be a lot more damaging for many more people, than even the largest breach for FA.  This is assuming that the average FA user is not dumb enough to send credit card info and other financial data through messages on FA when they are negotiating for a commission.  That's what secure sites like PayPal are for.

In any case, Sony might suffer a little over this, but most of their customers probably won't even remember it a month from now.

That part of human nature is what can get some people into trouble.  Hopefully, the Sony thing won't turn into an actual problem for most people.  There are some who use the same password for every single site that they are on, whether it is social or financial in nature.  Eventually, people who are lazy or careless with their own security will be affected when something like this happens.  I always assume that any sites can have a security breach, so I minimize the potential impact by never using the same password on multiple sites.  Another safeguard is to go to your credit card site and enable email alerts for any time your card is used.  That way, if someone does manage to get your card data, you'll be alerted the instant they try to use it, so you can take the appropriate actions.

That is all very good advice! Thank you very much for sharing my raccoon friend.

On a less serious and more playful note-
Do you get email alerts when someone else uses your diaper? :3

No.  I'd know the moment they started to wet it - assuming I was wearing it at the time!

I think it will hurt them as the above people said, this is real info....and people expect security from people they do business with.  Would you go to buy something at Macy's if you knew your credit card info was being leaked?  no.  the difference with FA is that people EXPECT security disasters there.  :-D

Oi, Why do people go to a place they EXPECT disasters from ugh @.@

Sony is hurting, yeah, But I don't think Sony is going to hurt nearly as bad as anyone projects.
