I just got the new Animal Crossing game today, and have pasted my first impressions (written as I played through the opening scenes) below. Enjoy!

On the title screen, I see pears, so probably that's what my town will have. I shamelessly looked up the questions to make sure I have a character appearance I like. Apparently you can also look up various arrangements of the town map, but having not played an Animal Crossing game in years, I'll just take the first one and not worry about it. At worst it'll be a slight inconvenience.
Rover, on the train to town, mentions "Haven't done this much traveling by train since 2002 or so... Man, that's weird." Which makes perfect sense... since the last time an Animal Crossing game featured Rover on a train was the Gamecube one, which was released in North American in 2002. I'd imagine in the Japanese version of New Leaf, Rover references the year 2001 instead.
Uh oh. The way you become mayor of the new town is... they mistake you for someone else. Now I'm afraid of what's going to happen when the REAL mayor arrives. Or is this going to be the same case as Link the Goron arriving at the Stock Pot Inn?
Urge to fill town with the characters from Ruby Quest... manageable.
"Nook's Homes, the real-estate office" OH BOY. Here we go again. XD Time to get into debt to rival my student loans. If only I could pay THOSE off by shaking trees...
Main Street? You mean I can actually visit space OUTSIDE the normal town? THE MIND BOGGLES!
I see, so it's a pregenerated area for all the shops so they don't have to rely on the random placement of the main town.
"Due to certain reasons, the business hours for today have been changed. -Store owners." Just a guess, but those "reasons" are "the new player tutorial and setup events" and "business hours" begin at the precise time I complete said setup. XD
It does feel nicer walking around with the 3DS's circle pad than the DS's digital plus pad.
The Able Sisters, on the other paw, seem to open at 10:00am. Plenty of time before then for me to get stuff done!
Oh hey, the Museum IS a place I can just waltz on in before anything else! XD And Blathers is the same as ever. =^_^=

Okay... Picked a spot close by the waterfall, the river, and not too far from the beach. Hopefully this will be a useful location!

Ah, so until my home gets built, I get a borrowed tent with a "mailbox!" ...which, Nook mutters under his breath, is a little shabby-looking. Which makes sense, as it's really a cardboard box on a fencepost with a slot cut into it. XD
"On June 9th, 2013, Alfador became the mayor of Fluffton." And I planted a tree in the main plaza to commemorate the event. Go me!
"Turnips are very sensitive to time paradoxes, so any shift in time will kill 'em in an instant." Subtle jab at the player to not save scum or modify the 3DS clock, eh?
P.S. Oh my. Got a letter from the person who was supposed to be mayor: "Congrats on your newfound mayorhood! To be honest, I was supposed to become the mayor, but one thing led to another... And now it's all up to you! I'm rooting for you! -Keep it a secret!" O_O I'm frightened now. Why did this person set me up to be mayor instead? It took me like ten minutes to think of that name. I wanted something that I don't already know of as a real fictional location (like Furriston or FurryMUCK), nor anything sexual or fetish-related that Nintendo's censors might nix (the only two examples I can think of also qualify under the first criterion: Yiffburg and Deathville), nor pertaining to single fandoms or potentially ephemeral interests (Ponyville)--I wanted something that pertained to the residents. Fluffton seemed a good choice.
(Not only are there probably hundreds of Animal Crossing towns named Ponyville by now, none of my residents turned out to be horses, so it wouldn't seem proper!)
