GPU for art trade?

I'm looking for a new GPU.

I have a GeForce GT 440, and it's a great little card, but I bought it on the lam and I should have waited for a more recent series.

I've been doing some research on GPU's for the past couple of weeks, and there's only a small list of cards that will fit in my rig and go with my power supply.

I've got my eye on the GT 645, GTX 650, or the 650 ti if anyone has one in storage they're not using.

I'd go for the GTS 450, or the GTX 550 ti, but they're both 8.25 inches, and I'm not sure if either of them would fit in my case.

The point for me, is to find one that's not going to cost me a hundred bucks. XD

But if it's case, I'll just have to save up.

Thanks!

~Love and Peace

Here's the Benchmarking website for GPU's that I reference.

Tell you a secret about GPUs. The manufacturers lie about how much power they require. I'm running a 500 watt on a 200 watt PSU.  No heat issues, nothing. Just make sure your CPU has an onboard fan. Granted, I also don't play TOO graphic intensive games. I think the two with the biggest requirements are Deus Ex: HR and Diablo 3 on near max settings. Skyrim runs perfectly fine on max. As do all my other games.

Oh, I know that. I just like to be within the realm of safety.

Sometimes having a weaker power supply can cause performance loses in the GPU, is all.

Especially if it requires a secondary power connector. (Plus you have to factor in CPU and RAM usage, which is normally only ever about 170 - 200 watts.)

I have a 450 watt OEM PSU with 32 volts on 3 12 volt rails.

This thing could power a GTX 680. XD

Mmhmm. Yuh. Well, all I know is they way over-state the needed power. xD The fact that I've been running this for over a year and not had it have trouble just states it. x3 I've run stress tests and benchmark programs, all is good. But yeah, LOOK OUT BELOW.

200 cpu dose not mean watt it means tdp

Did..I say CPU? I don't think I did.

But CPU still draws power. I think the Core 2 Duo is like 65 TDP.

what case do you have? gts 450 is about the same power as the gt440 lol

Actually, the GTS 450 is about 1.7x faster than the GT 440. And it's only on the list because of it's competitive price.

I have an HP xw4400 work station.

I'd love to have a rig like that.

But..

I don't have 400 dollars. TT___TT

did you try checking out newegg? The Sapphire cards they have perform on-par with ATI cards, and are usually cheaper, too. As an added bonus, they are usually a lot smaller, and can even be used to replace what is currently in my laptop (if I ever decide to repair it, lol).

On the other hand, I do have a few video cards, but they're way old. Like, ATI Rage 128 old.

isnt sapphire is one of the main manufacturing of ATI/AMD video cards o.O

From my understanding, they're an off-branch of ati, so it is possible. Never used one, myself.

I don't know enough about ATI and AMD to make an informed decision.

I also enjoy NVidia's proprietary PhysX and Cuda hardware.

Cuda is also great for encoding videos. ( I make video game videos for youtube.)

Personally, i have found that nvidia cards work well for most art-related stuff. As for AMD, I got their 8 core 4.2ghz cpu, and it's benchmark is 5th below the xeon chips made by intel. Seems intel exceeds amd in performance, but amd is good for the wallet.

nvidia is best for cuda and physx, but DirectCompute is faster on amd. directcompute is gonna be the new standers soon on most gpu acceleration programs. amd has more stream cores then nvidia and that is why directcompute is faster.

also amd has better video cards at the 50 to 100 dollar range then nvidia. you dont want to run physics on nvidia at that price range anyways lol

True, lol. However, it depends on what all you wanna do with the system, and what your programs handle best. Most of my stuff relies on physX and is written toward nvidia, so i went for the 690 gtx sli.

Just keep an eye on what your programs tend to handle best, and you're golden. ^_^

eww 690 over prices junk XD did you get 1 or 2 of them?

I was barely able to afford my GT 440.. TT____TT

The only money I make comes from commissions. And the money I make on commissions goes to my parents. (Well, about 75% of it, anyways.) And I don't make that much money..

That's why I was looking for an art trade. lol

I got one card with twin gpu's on it. I agree, it is overpriced, though. First off, i will likely NEVER use a 3D capable display, and will likely only have 1 display anyway, so the outputs i dont use may be wasted. I just got it to handle the serious display loads that my programs put on the system, and it handles that wonderfully. ^_^

Seriously, my old 220 couldnt handle more than 10,000 faces on any mesh without slowing to a crawl. With the 690, i can handle about 126,000 before it begins to slow at all.

Still, even if your graphics processor cannot handle everything you throw at it, you CAN compensate with your cpu and ram, as long as you have something strong enough to compensate. Granted, the performance may not be as good as it would be with a better video card, but at least you can still wotk, lol

i have 2 670s about same preformance as a 690. i got mine free but even so its 399 for each one of them and for a price of a 690 you can get 3x 670s (at the time it was released like 100~200 dollars cheaper now)
phyrexfirestorm
10 years, 10 months ago
Also true, but i opted for max airflow, instead of more cards. Once this gets too slow for my use, i may pick up some extra 690's to link through sli, but is fine for now. ^_^

similar to mine, lol. coolermaster case?

I got the armor revo 2 case, myself. It had the largest available stock fans i could find. ^_^
(We are WAY off topic, lol. please PM me if you wish to continue)

As far as actually purchasing the card, I would offer to do a trade, but I'm on a tight leash until I can move out from here.

If I had a regular job I'd have a badass system like this.

don't feel bad, man. It took me 11 years to get this baby, and I can tell you that the wait is worth it, as long as you actually use the computer, lol. For those who use them casually, or do not have high-performance demands, it would be viewed as a waste of money. >_>

Still, I found it worth it.
