Thank you so much, Microsoft.

by
So, for the past couple of weeks, I've been following the Xbox one's release and the controversy about it.

I've been visiting various forums and discussing it online with my friends, having mostly a negative opinion on the whole subject, but still adopting a 'wait for E3' attitude.

I get back from my friend's house, having spent the weekend there and set my laptop back up.  My internet doesn't work.

I reset my modem numerous times.   My internet doesn't work.

I restart my laptop.  My internet doesn't work.

I  check, recheck, unplug and plug in all my connections.  My internet doesn't work.

Finally, I run troubleshooter to see what it says is wrong.  The only thing it suggests is that I need to
"Sign up with your ISP to access the internet."  with the usual "Show me where I can do this." link.

Out of options, I click said link.

Does it take me to an internet troubleshooting FAQ?  No.  Does it take me to my billing or account information?  No.  Does it take me to my ISP's website?  No.   Does it take me anywhere even in the slightest bit related to the fact my internet will not work and i'm looking for a solution?  Of course not.

IT BRINGS UP A FUCKING MICROSOFT WEB PAGE ADD FOR XBOX ONE!!!!

Co-incidentally, my internet now suddenly works fine.

I just stared at my computer monitor for about... five minutes, unable to believe what had just transpired.

.............

I WAS intending to give Microsoft and the  XBOX one the benefit of the doubt until E3.  Even after all the horrible things I've heard about the new console and the even worse unconfirmed rumors I was still willing to see if the games on show at E3 would blow my tiny consumer-gamer mind enough to warrant me handing Microsoft a chunk of my cash.

  But now?

Good joke.   Thank you, Microsoft, I no longer have to worry one bit about which next gen system i'll be buying.  Even if the PS4 has all the bad features of an XBOX one and none of the "good" features, I'll still buy one just to spite Microsoft.

  >.>   <.<

Either that or I'll just stick to PC gaming.

PC gaming is the only real option anymore.  =/   I am curious, tho, what are the pros and cons you know of for the Xbox One?  I like to hear it from a fellow gamer's mouth than the hypemachines.

Pro's and cons.  Considering the amount of rumor and hyperbole surrounding the machine it's hard to tell what will and won't be part of the package.

All I honestly know for certain is that Kinect is mandatory, the xbox one can access TV and Movie services and it also plays.. well..games.  >.>  It's also less powerful than the PS4 and apparently relies on external cloud servers to power the games it'll play.

Everything else, even features it will have are still shrouded in mystery with no clear explanation of what will and won't happen.

Is it 'always online' or only needs to access the'net once every 24 hours and how much of the system will be locked out if it's not?    Can you swap games between consoles, lending them to your friends and they get a 'demo' level or do they need to pay the full price of the game, or something in between, also applying to used games?  The Kinect is pretty much always on as it needs to be for the xbox one's voice activation systems, but that's an infrared webcam always in your living room, is it going to be recording data all the time it's on? Does the Kinect sense how many people are watching a movie and stop the show till you pay extra cash per person?

There are dozens of other points of interest and scenario's that are relevant concerns but no one has a real clue about...

There's yes and no arguments aplenty for every situation and Microsoft is being deliberately vague on just about all these points and pretty much everything else surrounding the console.

At this juncture, all the 'rumors' about the console could be complete rubbish and it turns out to be the best thing since sliced bread, or you could find the Kinect has sent all your personal Data to third party advertising sites and telemarketers and pictures of your naked butt have turned up on 'freepronzweekly'  websites.

No one except Microsoft know for sure and they aren't telling.

This whole "cloud" thing doesn't sit well with me. Actually the online requirement, aside from the obvious "ick" about it, even for players with regular access to the internet, what happens when the xbox one is obsolete? Will the cloud servers be taken down and force you to re-buy the games for the next system?

As we know from cloud computing systems that have failed or been made obsolete already:   Yes, absolutely.

Hmm, didn't know it was already happening.

A few cloud services have gone under already, and a couple existing ones pulled games already.  There's no legal requirement to make content available or keep it available on cloud computing, which is why it's so damn popular.  It's like a big spoiled kid losing at basketball, and decides to take his basketball and go home so noone else can play.

Yeah I got a game from THQ on my PS3 a year back, and THQ's gone under. Thankfully the cloud service isn't required to play the game, though, but if it was, man what a waste of $60 that would be.

I'd say you'd have to.  Whilst you can buy old games on current online stores , If you are lucky enough to own an older system such as a snes, you can play your games there and save yourself the cash.  It's a completely standalone system.  However, it's unfeasible, impractical and expensive to keep servers for games running indefinitely when said games or more importantly, systems are no longer turning any sort of profit.  If those games rely on said servers to even play, then once those servers are eventually turned off, your beloved console is now a nice, heavy doorstop.

In fact, it makes sneaky, financial sense to create a console you can eventually just turn off.  Not only does it guarantee people need to buy the latest, newest shiny games system you've just produced to replace their 'obsolete' nonfunctional machine, but also they will have to repurchase any old 'classics' games that they simply can't do without for a nice slice of double-dipping.

Of course, this is all based on the fact that corporations consider the average consumer/gamer only slightly more intelligent than the plastic houseplants in their lobby.

My thoughts exactly. Plus I think they're just testing how far they can push before the hardcore FPSers stop singing their praises and go, "hey wait a minute..."

xbox one is a console designed with the consol developers and the game producers in mind, not the consumer and sertenly not the core gamer. It's an over hyped cash grab thinly veiled as a media hub for all your shit. Do not buy it. It's only reason for existence is to get you to shell out cash for shit you shouldent have to pay for and have never had to pay for, but microsoft now thinks you should.

Nintendo is not doing that, from what I can tell so far Sony is not gong to do it, If SOny does NOT do it then Microsoft has lost the war before the first skirmish.

vote with your dollar thats all i can say.

This is pretty much the impression I received, as did many other gamers.  Its kinda unfortunate as, for all it's flaws the 360 was a decent enough system. I was a ps3 and later a PC gamer, but I won't try to deny the impact the 360 had on the gaming world.  Looks like the ONE will have an impact too, of a completely different sort.

But PC gaming isn't an option. Not unless you just pirate and mod everything. The DRMs have already made some games borderline unplayable for paying players (Diablo III and SimCity come to mind), but pirates can deactivate that shit in like 2 minutes anyway so all it does is piss off people who made the mistake of shelling out $60 for a PC "game". I find it odd that you would suggest PC gaming in a discussion about how much the Xbox One sucks, considering the Xbox One just brings PC gaming features to the console (like always-online DRM, games that are installed to the HD instead of played from disc, severe restrictions on the buying and selling of used games, etc.)
Kaon

That's the whole point.  PC gamers know full well that things like Diablo 3/Sim city's DRM are garbage.  Hence why those games were blasted by the community.  Most PC gamers put up with the annoyances posed by their chosen platform for things like improved graphics/mods/certain MMO's not available to console and so forth.

PC gaming is not overly gamer friendly, that's what consoles were for.  Put in your disk and play.  No mess, no fuss, no gimmicks.

If microsoft are going to include all the BS of a PC in their console, why the heck would anyone with a PC even consider buying it? Will the xbox one have better graphics that a top end PC? Consoles never have. Can I mod Xbox one games to my hearts content?  I seriously doubt it.  Will all the MMO's I like playing be released on it, better than on my PC? Pigs might fly.

Can I play the xbox games any time I wish If my internet is down for a long period of time? Probably not and even Steam has a fully functional offline mode.

So what possible advantage does an Xbox one have over my PC?  It plays TV and movies!! Something I'm sure my PC will never do... owait....

So in conclusion... it's a sad,sad day when PC gaming has become more gamer and consumer friendly than the new Xbox.

Out of curiousity, are you running windows 8?

i've been running windows 7 for over a year and have never run into this, thankfully.

And honestly, unless microsoft makes some very major changes in a small amount of time, yeah, i'm upgrading my pc.

I kinda need to anyway, but still >.>

Windows 7, actually.  I have to say I really can't prove it was anything more than co-incidence, but i tend not to believe in convenience like that.  Co incidence or not, i'm not buying an Xboxone anytime soon.

Yeah, I don't plan on it either.

also, xbox one, whoever came up with that needs to have the daylights beat out of him, or some common sense beat into em.  The xbox one....it's your third one dingbats >.<

sorry...

I actually edited the INI to crank the graphics beyond the max in the options menu, downloaded the 2k texture packs, and a few 4k ones as well, and the mod that adds significantly more joints, pivots, angles and prims to the character models.  =3  Average FPS:  66.  XD

In my opinion
In the long run PS4 will be cheaper for gamers because due to the servers for xbox one
lets say they made a new gen of the xbox then what would happen to the servers of xbox one it would be taken down of course cause keeping those servers up would cost microsoft money and with the fact that xbox one would constantly need the srrvers and internet to play with you would be saving a lot more money and say your internet was down you wouldnt be ablbato play on your xbox one and i heard that you also get charged if the kinect sensor finds more people at your house so its bad for parties and they would charge you for playing used games too so in my opinion the xbox one is just a big waste of money and it would be much cheaper if you just went for the PS4
