You know, i've been using lots of different audio equipment over the years but i still love the MiniDisc. Why? Because i love the colorful little discs, the recording function, the possibility of doing your own mixes and storing them like regular albums or tapes. It's a lot sexier than juggling with digital files all the time. And i still think that ATRAC sounds heaps better than MP3 and company.
I also still enjoy doing my fieldrecordings with this little MD walkman and my stereo electret condenser mic. The soundquality of the DA/AD converters are awesome and ATRAC even allows 16, 20 or 24 bit recordings while MP3 and other lossy formats are bound to 16 bit only.
But now.. in 2013 and after Sony announced to stop producing MD walkmans.. it seems they have also stoped the production of blank discs as well, even thou it was said there will be supply of new blank MDs and repair service for already sold MD decks and walkmen. From one moment to the other i cannot get new blank MDs anywhere anymore.. The shelves are empty and there are not even rest posts being sold. At the same time the prices of remaining blank MDs and even used MDs on ebay and amazon are rising and EXPLODING!! It's insane and complete madness and it really pisses me off. I wonder if this is really only in germany or anywhere else?
And how's the situation in japan? I bet you can still get them there. But i don't know any japanese store that sells and ships them to germany. Are we MiniDisc users doomed to pay 40+ Euros for a handfull of used MDs? Are they really becoming a little fortune? I don't think it's an obsolete format. It has aged very well and shows even today what an awesome concept of a digital audio medium it is.
you are right. It was me ^^ I was sitting on 1 or 2 more remixes before PC problems forced me to halt all my works untill i manage to get my productive system running again.

I read all about these in Crutchfield catalog during my 20s. I wanted to buy a Minidisc deck and MD Discman during those days but I couldn't afford either at the time. The units sounded like a great idea.

Yeah, MiniDisc gear has always been a bit pricey, even thou it was aimed at a younger audience that didn't have the money for it. Now you can get most MD Decks and portables at pretty low prices. I own 2 portables that run on standard AA batteries and no exotic battery bricks. Got my first one in 2009 for a few bucks and was blown away by its soundquality. Especially the ones i did with my mini stereo mic. :) Thou you have to make sure the walkman is not near the mic since the drive creates a audible sound at recording and playback. Some louder, some more quiet. Depending on the model.
