Will you also be hinting at the uglier side of sports as well? It doesn't have to be in great detail, just flavor text here and there, enough to give some depth to baseball beyond "Yay! Slugger O'Toole just hit a homer! Poor Mister Simpson!" or "There's no joy here in Mudville. Mighty Casey has just struck out!"
There can be things like offhand mentions of an increase in police presence due to fans rioting in previous years because their team won (and people look down on furries; when was the last time furries burned cars and couches because their favorite subjects won/lost something?), that "the Nuggets have made a momentous comeback since that sex scandal with Coach Whassizname four years ago" (sadly, sports are still considered more important than education in many places), that the National League has stripped the Kansas City Goshawks of their last three wins and barred them from finishing the season due to an onfield brawl in the middle of a game (some teams act more like schoolyard gangs than professionals, after all), things of that nature. Peruse the sports section and I'm sure something will suggest itself.
If this makes you a bit hesitant, remember, I'm not a sports fan. I don't really like any of them, baseball included.
