This journal is for my use only, to be kept for quick reference

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government"
-- Thomas Jefferson, 1 Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

"The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good"
-- George Washington

"The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed."
-- Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist Papers at 184-188

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
-- Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759.

"This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it or their revolutionary right to dismember it or overthrow it."
-- Abraham Lincoln, 4 April 1861

Men trained in arms from their infancy, and animated by the love of liberty, will afford neither a cheap or easy conquest.
-- From the Declaration of the Continental Congress, July 1775.

"As to the species of exercise, I advise the gun. While this gives [only] moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion to your walks."
-- Thomas Jefferson, writing to his teenaged nephew.

"Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom."
-- John F. Kennedy

"Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action."
-- George Washington, in a speech of January 7, 1790

"A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves ... and include all men capable of bearing arms."
-- Senator Richard Henry Lee, 1788, on "militia" in the 2nd Amendment

No kingdom can be secured otherwise than by arming the people. The possession of arms is the distinction between a freeman and a slave.
-- "Political Disquisitions", a British republican tract of 1774-1775

"Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect every one who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined."
-- Patrick Henry, speech of June 5 1788

That the said Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the press or the rights of conscience; or to prevent the people of the United states who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms...
-- Samuel Adams, in "Phila. Independent Gazetteer", August 20, 1789

Every Communist must grasp the truth, 'Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.'
-- Mao Tse-tung, 1938, inadvertently endorsing the Second Amendment.

"Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.
-- John F. Kennedy

Germans who wish to use firearms should join the SS or the SA - ordinary citizens don't need guns, as their having guns doesn't serve the State.
--Heinrich Himmler

I support the rights of people to bear arms but I also support the government's right to keep guns out of the hands of murderers and psychos.

and who decides who psychos are?  Does my father who served this country deserve his firearms taken away because he suffers PTSD?

How about we let EVERYONE have their rights until they lose them by their actual actions, instead of things they MAY do.

And i fully agree. i do not define psycho as a set of mental issues. i do believe that some conditions, such as PTSD, BiPolar Disorder, and others, put a person into a greater risk but should not preclude them from owning a gun. I do feel that anybody with a criminal record for any form of violent crime or people with a history of violent mental illness should not be allowed guns though .

I agree, but that is alrrady and has more or less always been the rule.  You lose your rights when you become a criminal, period.

Yes but now they seek to add a mental health check as well and I agree on that. Don't want somebody that was just released from the asylum getting a gun.

But again, if a person were in a psych ward for... nymphomania, kleptomania, suicidal thoughts?  how exactly does that mental illness effect YOUR safety?

And again I speak of VIOLENT mental illnesses.

The problem is that violence doesn't have a real working definition, which is why I include kleptomania.  Some people consider even petty theft an act of violence.

Certainly, studying the past is a wondrous way for us to implement better policies today. But the past is made of more then quotations alone. It is important to understand the context and motivation for every quotation, and also to study how they should impact us presently.

It becomes all too easy to worship quotations as-is, and allow them to become belief and literal guidelines.

I understand that, but mostly these are reminders to myself, and things that inspire myself.

When this country was established, what did they use to break free of the tyranny of King George.... GUNS!!! When WWII was faught for the safety of the American citizens and to retalliate for what the Japanese did to Pearl Harbor and put a stop to Adolf Hitler's Genocide, what did they use... GUNS!!! I am an American Citizen and under God I shall fight every possible fight to keep my right to bear arms. I am an American and i have the right to bear arms because it is a principle that this country was established on. Because I have the right to protect myself, my family, and my country from evil that is not forseen. America is a Gun Nation and Goddammit it should stay that way forever because it's my right and nobody will take my rights away from me!!!                       And that's what I think of the gun situation
