Saving the eyes for dessert.

So, other artists out there... When you're working on finishing a picture, is there something you really love to do that you save for the very end? For me its the eyes. Sometimes when I'm in the middle of a pic I'll ask Aethan or Teko their opinion of how it's coming along and they'll be all weirded out because I haven't added the pupils yet. The characters will just have these blank, white eyes.
I know it sounds all lame and pretentious, But I add the eyes last because they're the things that breathe life into the drawing and make them feel like real characters.

Wouldn't it just make them look like comic book super heroes? :P

It's kind of amazing how much expression and life it creates when you add the pupils. Before that they sort of look like Li'l Orphan Annie characters and then ZAP they have emotions with just the addition of a dot :)

I tend to draw the pupils right away to check if they point in the right direction or if I have to move the head.

I don't have any particular preference what to draw last. I just start somewhere and end someplace ^^

Oh yeah, Ill do them on the roughs to point to the focus and stuff, but I mean when Im finishing a pic, like coloring it.

I see. For finishing, the eyes are often last as well (or generally facial features like nose and mouth). But that is mostly because of simplicity. I am rather ok doing faces, so i finish the other parts first.

Not an artist; but your note on the eyes reminds me of Syynx when he does stuff like: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/10350086/

Its important to convey HORSEDICK.
through blank white eyes.

The eyes are usually the first thing I go for.  Helps convey the general idea I had behind the picture.
I just sorta go from there.

When I used to draw, I'd also save the eyes for last...more or less for the first reason (they convey a lot of emotion) but secondly, I was never very good at eyes =\ The problem is, I'm a like a neanderthal trying to thread a needle when it comes to intricate details, and of all anatomy, they require tiny little geometrical motions that my stupid clunky hands just can't manage.

Practice makes perfect. Never stop.
A couple pics back someone said, 'Hey! Your art is getting better!"
I looked over my old stuff and new stuff and said to myself, "Hey! It is!"
theres always stuff to improve but now I can get an idea more or less out of my head and convey it exactly how I want it. Backgrounds are tricky and time consuming, as is mixing shade and color. But Im workin on it!
