A Sad Day For Artists...

Disney just GUTTED their hand-drawn animation department, laying off SEVERAL top-tier animators. The reason has not been diven, however t is sad to see an iconic company of hand-drawn animation shoving their animators lives in a paper shredder along with their families without much more than a thought or regret. More info here: http://www.cartoonbrew.com/disney/breaking-disney-just... and http://www.theouthousers.com/index.php/news/121489-dis...

This is indeed a dark time for cartoons...

The reason they're cutting out hand-drawn animation is to keep up with the current technology.. least to my knowledge this is why >> but it is very sad indeed, I grew up on disney ;;

exactly, and one day, computers and machines will have most, if not all, of the jobs and the rich will get richer somehow while the poor get poorer. It will be for the lack of jobs that the poor will struggle harder than ever to survive. This is totally unfair. We are supposed to be making more jobs not taking them away for little to no good reason. Most things are good in moderation... frankly i get tired of ALL the CGI. I love old school animation. This is just wrong to do this. They bought LucasArts and shut it down! They gutted their own animation department... for what? I smell corporate corruption and greed. I sense a payroll upgrade for the big wigs as they trample all over what made Disney great to begin with... I fear next CGI will replace real actors before too long... This is sad.

Don't forget about Marvel, Disney bought them too.

yeah... trying not to think about that... However I think they are safe as Marvel is making tons of movies still and their profits are up.

how can this be revived when Disney doesnt even care about their own legacy. They are killing the company slowly by removing all traces of what made them great. Disney used to be about kids and cartoons... not computers telling us stories... Humans tell the stories, it is a tradition for thousands of years. I think even the people who come up with the stories will soon be replaced... Technology advanced exponentially faster each year. This all has some part to play in the ultimate endgame that we ourselves created.

As much I like Walt Disney, I hate Disney Studios.
The problems not started in this year, neither in ten years. Could say countless times when they made it dirty. The main problem is not with CGI.

I'm curious as to what your issue with Disney is? And Walt Disney was a homophobic man... Disney has matured since then, which I am glad for that.. How is this not CGI's fault?

I'm pretty much on the side that as long the product is good, I don't care who made it and what he/she does in their life. Sadly, Disney long beyond this, as they're killing off concurence and making unwatchable (as I can't watch them) things nonstop.
For starters, Winnie-the-Pooh. Never mention Lion King. Studio Ghibli. Britney Spears and other offsprings. Now Marvel (from Lucas, I only enjoyed their video games, so it was not a big downfall).
CGI is just the matter of taste, it isn't the enemy of storyline (like in Metropolis). But for WALL-E and UP, I just found them totally good for first glance, but they messed up so many things in them I can't count (the first half of WALL-E is pretty good, but for UP, only when the old guy is flying off with his house). In my case I much more hate those serials with real people, using old jokes non-stop, and generally with zero happenings (not just Disney, other studios have them too - Dallas).

Well I don't feel much of what Disney puts out anymore is worth as much as it used to be.  True it is all about the money and well they want more I'm trying to think and failing at remembering the last time I have watched an animated movie that really grabbed me emotionally.  Lion King?  Maybe a little with Wall-E but that was pixar which I consider different from Disney whether it is or not.   I just don't get the emotion from animated movies these days.  Whether you wanted to or not I think most people were a bit awed by the detail in Beauty and the Beast even though most of that part wasn't drawn.  I just haven't seen the combination of music, visual and characters in a while that make what I feel to be a lasting movie.

Small side note that doesn't mean that there haven't been good movies, I really enjoyed Puss in Boots but really was there much to the movie besides a little action an humor.   I guess what I mean to say is there are movies that shaped my life and those around me as kids and even beyond.  Even though I didn't see it in theaters I remember the first time Bambi came out on VHS and trying not to cry while my mother was(she was crying watching it for the second time) even though teen boys are near forbidden to cry because of a movie.  Where are the stories/movies that will make you think back and even connect you to people you don't even really know.   I think in a way you see the person behind the drawing someone who cares about their art and how each detail and imperfection looks especially when they take the time to get it right.  It is so much easier to change and edit things that I think just a little emotion is lost when you let the computer do to much work.    Maybe.

Well the only truly sad thing to see go and I guess it will if they get rid of everyone is the fact they have animators actually draw in Disney California and sometimes the spot in Disneyland.   You can stand and watch the animators at certain times draw a character on those cool swivel boards.  Not sure what was more fun watching the drawing or the kids try and guess what was being drawn.

I rambled sorry.
