Referencing is not tracing.

Even if all the lines match up neatly.

Just saiyan.

Well, that's one of the points I always challenge...
If the lines match up neatly, there's no way to say it's -not- a trace.
I'm fully ok with referencing, though! Is the best way to learn new shapes and styles~

It's how I've improved in the last eight months I've had my tablet.

Yes, I reference heavily for some things. But I don't trace.

Apparently, I was accused of tracing and face a ban from Ink Bunny.

Well, if the lines do match neatly, you -will- be acused of tracing, be it truth or not. And since there's no way to prove you didn't, you'll be in trouble.

When you reference, you don't really need to do it just the same, anyway, so try to give yourself more room for creation while referencing, and they'll have no right to complain! ^^

I'm just gonna take a break for a while.

I've been meaning to anyways.

Hopefully I will be granted clemency and this will all blow over.

I understand what you mean, there is always the risk of people making accusations like this, despite it not being a trace.  Which is why i look at photos if i need an idea for a pose.

I'm not good at poses, so I generally tend to reference a lot.

I'm thinking it might be cool to get poses from amateur porn.  Some adult sites have galleries of people posting themselves.

Real life doesn't translate well to anime.

True but how did this come up?

Someone reported me, I guess.

I got a message from the Ink Bunny Support Team this morning.

Been accused of tracing more than once. It's a side effect of how I learned to draw though.

Step 1. Find image of interest.
Step 2. Draw image over, and over, and over, and over until you manage to recreate it at whatever size you want.
Step 3. Analyze and work out a break down of image each time step 2 is performed.
Step 4. See step 1.

Middle school art teacher was the first person to call me a human xerox after she watched me do it a few times after she accused me of tracing. I used soooooo much of her paper. lol

It's really just a parallel method to life drawing that teaches a person to analyze style as well as work out the hand-eye connection. Can claim that after teaching a some folks art and talking it over with some cool people out in the world.

Exactly. I learned by copying the styles of other artists. My earliest memories of learning to reference where of Christopher Hart books. He has so many, and he teaches you step-by-step how to draw the picture.

Ever since then, I've been able to replicate almost any style I see. Even the well known Aogami is not impervious to my technique. (Though I've yet to copy his work because he's a buddy of mine and I don't want to be called a biter.)

Chris Hart isn't the best teacher for anime styles, but I do point folks his way to get started sometimes. I point them toward his anatomy and figure books and tell them to stay away from his anime stuff until later on.

Polykarbon and Julie Dillon were where I used to point people for anime stuff before all the good tutorials on their sites disappeared. They both had stuff that showed a direct translation on anatomy from real to exaggerated in a way that is similar to some of Tezuka's few lessons that are still out there.

When you're eight years old browsing the art section of a library, he's pretty much all their is until you can stomach the sketchy art books that are 12x9 and thousands of pages thick. Lol

As for Polykarbon and Julie Dillon, never 'eard of 'em.

I'll agree there. At least there was that for you. All I had were the "Draw three circles and connect them like this to get a dog" books. It's why I started deconstructing and reproducing art, then looking at medical journals to see how muscles worked. lol

There used to be a great show on PBS that taught art at a kid's level though. It's how I learned to shade a three dimensional form before I hit my teen years.

Polykarbon was a popular artist in the nineties. Their site is still up, as is Julie Dillon's. Julie has moved away from the anime look though and into a more traditional art style.

I like Jessica Peffer's Dragonart. I learned a lot from reading her book.

As for Medical tomes, the last time I picked up Gray's Anatomy I was accused of looking at the bits about vaginas.

I won't touch them ever again.

Not even if there's a fire.

I cant copy, reference an image on paper, to a drawing on paper with a pencil, but I can do a reasonable representation of a cartoon character from an image on paper to a mouse drawn image on the computer, but I get the scale wrong every time. The other problem Ive had, is that Ive only ever been able to do it using one particular pixel bashing program, and one particular computer which is older than most users of certain teen, young adult web sites.

I hate how this dual core XP machine is Sluggish. WTF is it doeing, it cant even keep up with my slow typing, so how am I even expected to do real time line drawing on it? 8(

I dunno about Greys Anatomy, which I read as Greys Academy, but at least you dont have the manual of Obstretics and Gynacology. 8}

Oh Lawd. Lol

You said your dual core is slow? What's the CPU Make? What OS are you running?

I've got an older Core 2 Duo and it's lightning quick. (plays all my games, too.)

I think its an AMD thing about 2.5 Ghz, with 2 Gig RAM running XP and a HD5450 GPU.

Id prefer to use Ubuntu etc but teh GPU drivers are absolutely atrocious, I cant even get 1280*1024, and thats a VESA standard, on Ubuntu 8(

I wanna AROS for Pi. Lets see what a 30k kernal does on a 1.2 Ghz CPU 8}

I know that feel.

If it wasn't for my immense video game and software library, I'd be using a Linux Based OS.

Have you tried Lubuntu? It's like a suuuuuper light version of Ubuntu but it's supposedly blazing fast.

Something to try, to see how much it supports, well, if you havent already, is Ubuntu, Wine, wineTricks etc, and if you have Steam, Steam for Linux. Seems Valve is getting anoyed with Microsoft or something. Im still trying to find out if I can install DirectX and Windows based graphics drivers on Wine, just so I can have a go at accessing the GPU acceleration functions under the Emulator.

I do strange things like that. 8}

ArcCahlon

lol I use to do that by measuring the sketch then drawing little dots as reference to where the lines should go to avoid making the per portions too big. it also helped when making the thing smaller or bigger (use to pause the TV and draw what was paused so lots of scaling down)
MakoRuu
Yeah, apparently that's a form of tracing.
ArcCahlon

well it helped me get better the before i stopped drawing and if i ever needed to i'd do it again with out shame. learning the motions when doing it can really help.
MakoRuu

I'll just have to keep practicing, is all.
ArcCahlon
