Ohmigod I made it!

by
I am writing this from my hotel in Narita, Japan.

It took me 10 minutes to figure out how to turn on the lights...

...Japan says it's just shy of 11pm, but my body tells me it's just shy of 8am @_@

Yay!  So glad to hear you made it there safely. ^_^

How is Japan so far?  I know you've only been there a few hours, but I wanna know. XD

Whelp, it's been a few hours, since my laptop charger was the only plug that doesn't work in Japan (stupid grounding plug...).

So far it's been an absolute joy to be here - complete strangers have been completely open and eager to help me with questions I've asked in my semi-inept Japanese. I'd been expecting a reasonable deal of xenophobia, but every conversation (albeit light...) I've had has been warm and welcoming.

I only wish I could better communicate right off the bat~

I assumed Japan had those three-prong plugs.  I know their plugs are the same as the US ones (I rented an import N64 once, and it had the standard US plug) so I just assumed they had that one, too.

How have people reacted to a foreigner knowing the language?  Are they kind of used to it, or was it a pleasant surprise?

Also, did you check out the Zinacat links I gave in your previous journal? :)  The comic about her adventures is cute.  Especially the kids.  Too bad it didn't last.

Nope, just the two prong ones, which means that stuff like my DS charger still works just fine~ I was able to buy a converter for 1000 yen, and it has three inputs in it :D

I think my ability (albeit little) to use Japanese might be why people were so welcoming to me. The main problem is that I can string together words just fine - it's understanding what's said to me that's the problem @_@ For the people that used ample body language, this wasn't an issue. For the ones that just told me stuff... I had to nod politely and hope for the best~

People seem pretty used to foreigners in general here in Narita. Not surprising considering this is where the international airport is. I overheard a number of non-English languages while I was wandering around the mall - French, German, etc...

And I did check out that journal ^^ Not all of it, but most~ Since Aomori is the closest part of the main island to Hokkaido, it was pretty relevant to me :3

So...then computers and game systems like the PS3 only have two-pronged plugs?  Weird.

Anyway, did you check out the comic, too?  My favorite pages are these: http://umeboshiheart.smackjeeves.com/comics/1105941/im...  http://umeboshiheart.smackjeeves.com/comics/1132554/ju...

The first is kind of nice in that it shows that kids are kids no matter the country.  The second is just funny to see how some kids judge the greatness of Japan.

Although my Japanese is limited, I've gotten great results from just asking "(Location) wa doko desuka" / "Where is (location)".

Nope! Everything got here just fine!

Had a bit of a concern at LAX, because I didn't have a connecting flight from Denver to Tokyo, so I had to get my bags, then check in again for my next flight. Thankfully my bags were one of the first to come out, and I made it to my fight right on time (or 10 minutes late by Japanese standards).

Oh man.  I know that jet lagged feeling.  Hopefully it won't take you too long to adjust to the time difference.  Best of luck, and I hope you enjoy Japan!

I have yet to master the skill of sleeping on a plane.  Hell, on my flight to Narita from Newark (longest single leg of flight I've ever been on -- 16 hours), I barely slept at all!  Mostly because I was in the uncomfortable middle seat and the nice Japanese men on either side of me kept waking me up whenever the flight attendant was going by with drinks or meals or whatever.  XP  I was all "FFFFFFFFFF, LET ME SLEEP."

(No, I didn't stay in Japan -- I was passing through on my way to Guam, which is a really sucky place to be in December.  It rained every day I was there.  Hard.)

Been an absolute blast so far :D The only reason I've been tired is because I've been constantly busy the whole time. My legs are soooo sore...

I thiiiiink I start on April 8th~ I'm actually with Interac, which is the largest privately operated teaching placement program. JET is run by the government, but Interac is the closest to them in quality~

What prefecture will you end up in? Because if it's near Yokohama, I'm making you visit places I've depicted in TNC and take photos on location. :O

Heeheehee. 日本へようこそ、Ketsa. :3 (nihon e youkoso - Welcome to Japan)

Nah, I'll be in Aomori prefecture~ I'm currently in Narita, though, which has been awesome enough for me to want to return here again in the future. Chiba prefecture has set a fantastic first impression ^^

Hey, are you still around? :o

Were you attacked by a pack of ravenous, sex-crazed lolis?

Or the victim of the Yakuza?

Or attacked by the legendary Yakuza Lolis? :o

Or have you just been busy enjoying yourself and getting acclimated to your new home?
Ketsa
5 years, 6 months ago
hee hee... actually it's just that - I have gotten to my new home yet ^^;;; I won't be moving in until the 4th of April. Until then I'm in a variety of hotels, and my days are as packed as you can imagine @_@

Currently in Morioka, in Iwate prefecture - met Dolce (the top IIDX player in the world) at the arcade out here. He was cool people, and seemed legitimately flattered that I asked to get a picture with him~

I figured you were busy, but I couldn't help making a couple jokes. ^_^

Is Japan everything you thought it'd be?
Ketsa
5 years, 6 months ago
It's exceeded my expectation in just how beautiful everything is~ Heck, even the sidewalks I've seen have an artistic quality to them.

I just wish I was more competent with understanding the Japanese spoken to me. I have an easy enough time asking questions, I just don't always understand the answers ^^;

I'm sure that will come in time, being surrounded by the language and all.

I'm so envious of you.
