On Monday, I took the National Counselor Examination and passed with a grade of 92. This exam is required in order to obtain certification as a counselor as well as state counselor licensure. Considering the difficulty level of some of the questions on the test, I was rather surprised I received such a high grade. I am thankful to all of my professors for their teaching and guidance, which helped me to get this far. It was a pleasure learning from them as they all had provided a wonderful academic experience.
If there are any psychology majors pursuing counselor certification, I would highly recommend the book, Encyclopedia of Counseling, by Dr. Howard Rosenthal. It was very beneficial in my studies and I am sure others would benefit from it as well. The book covers all sections of the NCE along with answers to frequently asked question about it. Overall, the information that Dr. Rosenthal provides will help applicants feel more confident and prepared to take the test.
In regards to my education, I have already earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and Master of Arts in counseling psychology. I would like to obtain a doctorate someday, but I want to wait until I have a job to afford the tuition payments and gain more experience in the field of behavioral health. Only then will I feel better about pursuing it.
