I need your opinion here...

by
I decided to revamp the rates for my writing. The following rates will most likely be official after I get done with my current writing commission:

up to 750 words = .07/word
751 - 1500 words = .06/word
1501 - 2250 words = .05/word
2251 - 3000 words = .04/word
3001+ words = .03/word

With a minimum of 350 words.

All feedback I get here will be taken into consideration and will be used in my final decision.

I'm also a writer, and I've thought about taking commissions, I haven't tried to create a scale of this sort. If my math is right, your smallest commission is $24.50. Please don't misunderstand my question: Do you think that you can get these rates? It's not a question of your talent, not in any way; it's only that, in my experience, such prices usually go for visual rather than written art. I would be very interested to watch your progress, and I wish you every success!

(At these rates, the novella that I recently completed would cost about $1200...)

I have no idea what rates are reasonable when it comes to any art, visual or story. Some artists get paid $1000 a pic, other can't hardly give their art away. There hardly seems rhyme or reason to it all, maybe it's just one big popularity contest. Then again, isn't that how professionals get paid too? It seems rarely about talent and more about who knows you, or who you know. Recently started a 'name your own price' structure for coloring and only one person has taken me up on that offer. So I'm not sure what to do aside from just enjoy doing gift art for my friends until I'm well known enough to put a price on what my efforts are worth.

I think this is more of a... internal guideline you might use, to set a ballpark on how much you think your time is worth when you are writing for somebody.   This whole pay-by-the-word sounds so... copy-writer-ish.  Write me words of copy for this ad, for this description, for this scene.  Is that the kind of writing you're being commissioned to do that would come in at only 350 words or so?

I think actual stories are a whole different matter, and speaking of the rates for a story writing in these terms is... like charging somebody for hammer strokes on a chisel when making a sculpture.  The patron commissions the work, the artist engages in it.  The patron gets what the artist makes.  1000 strokes or 100,000 strokes, it makes no difference, does it?
