"Furries are so tolerant." [Warning: language]

by
There's this romantic notion that furries, by and large, are much more tolerant than the general population. It isn't difficult to understand why people think this would be the case, but unfortunately... it's really not. Like the general population, the furry fandom does have a few genuinely open-minded and awesomely tolerant people... but anyone who reads a lot of profiles, journals, or comments on FurAffinity, InkBunny, etc, is used to seeing things like this:

"Male and female characters only. NO HERMS."

"That's gross. How can anyone like that?"

"People who are into that are sick."

"I fucking hate My Little Pony. Bronies are fucking morons."

"Sonic art is stupid."

The fact is, despite the primary unifying trait of furries being interest (sometimes sexual interest) in anthropomorphic animals, furries do a surprisingly amount of "What you like is weird!" And it doesn't even have to be about particular art styles, fandoms, or sexual fetishes. Sometimes it's as simple as what books you read, what movies you watch, what television shows you like, whether or not you like sports...

So if you're wondering why I twitch every time someone pats the fandom on the back because furries are "so tolerant," that'd be why.

I agree completely. If you don't like it, leave it be. And if you don't want to draw herms, don't do all caps rage about it.

Hilariously enough, I've gotten negative-to-mixed responses on FA so far.

That doesn't really surprise me.

Its expected but as far as I see a majority of the fandom is more open-minded than the general populace, which still has more of a "eww its weird get it the hell away from me " mindsets.

I definitely disagree that it's a significant deviation from the general population, but there's probably quite a bit of confirmation bias in both positions and there's no real way to test it scientifically unfortunately. Regardless of whether it's a significant difference from the general population, though, I think the "OMG LIEK FURRIES ARE SO TOLERANT" stuff is way overblown, though.

The journal or one of the comments? x3

The journal. Been into ponies a LONG time, and the majority of furries I've met are all like this. And now the furries are taking over pony cons while bringing in their drama... So not looking forward to that!

Ahhh, I'm sorry you've had that experience D:

On a lighter note, we should totally be in art together again soon!

Well, intolerant people will always exist.
But seriously, people who deliberately go to pictures they don't like just to say how stupid it is, are idiots (which sounds intolerant/hypocritical, but eh. I'm intolerant against intolerant people)
Whenever I meet someone that likes something I don't, I just politely say I'm not into it, without going all "OMG UR SO WEIRD" on their asses.

It's true intolerant people will always exist, but my point is I just think overall there isn't really this pronounced spirit of tolerance in the furry community that a lot of people claim there is.

One thing I'm noticing a LOT of in this "tolerant" fandom myself is a rapidly growing number of younger furs that not only consider anyone over 22-25 to be old, but also tend avoid or downright refuse to talk to anyone over the age of mid-twenties...I swear, next person that posts a "I'm 20, I'm old, boohoo" journal...X_x

This fandom is awesomely tolerant if you're a young, attractive, popular, cisgender gay male that isn't interested in any unpopular books/movies/other interests, I don't get what's so hard about that! ;)

(Yeah, I agree. I'm only 27, but I have friends in their 30s and 40s and they've run into a lot of bullshit in the fandom.)
