There's this romantic notion that furries, by and large, are much more tolerant than the general population. It isn't difficult to understand why people think this would be the case, but unfortunately... it's really not. Like the general population, the furry fandom does have a few genuinely open-minded and awesomely tolerant people... but anyone who reads a lot of profiles, journals, or comments on FurAffinity, InkBunny, etc, is used to seeing things like this:
"Male and female characters only. NO HERMS."
"That's gross. How can anyone like that?"
"People who are into that are sick."
"I fucking hate My Little Pony. Bronies are fucking morons."
"Sonic art is stupid."
The fact is, despite the primary unifying trait of furries being interest (sometimes sexual interest) in anthropomorphic animals, furries do a surprisingly amount of "What you like is weird!" And it doesn't even have to be about particular art styles, fandoms, or sexual fetishes. Sometimes it's as simple as what books you read, what movies you watch, what television shows you like, whether or not you like sports...
So if you're wondering why I twitch every time someone pats the fandom on the back because furries are "so tolerant," that'd be why.
