God bless Start8

by
Since i started working on this comic/commissions/sites adventure i had very little time to study or learn new tricks other that aren't art related.. for that reason i still use Photoshop Cs2 (each time i want to use a new version i discover that i suck so much, different hotkeys, and i can't find things when i need them.... it's worst on the case of flash, i was used to flash 5.0 (back on the macromedia days, before adobe bought the program).. so i'm like 8 versions behind the current, nowdays flash is a program totally different and i can't do nothing when i open it....  sometimes i think is becouse i'm getting old too... you know, is hard to learn new tricks for an old dog.... when windows 8 was released, i tough "no, this will not happens me again, i'll get used to this new OS now, i know microsoft will not change back to the start button on future versions, the tiles thing and new "start menu" (closer to xbox and windows mobile... orientated for touch screens) is the future... so i bought my digital copy of windows 8 ...man,  for about 2 weeks i was struggling with it.. even turning off the computer was really complicated... and damn i wanted to return to windows 7 quickly but the only way to do it was formatting the computer (a big waste of time)..  suddenly i found this program (start8) somewhere and decided to install it, it brings the start menu back closer to windows 7 style... and make some things works like the normal windows.. you are still on windows 8 but it doesn't sucks so much now... so at least i'll be a step forward from windows 7 ..without suffering the radical changes so fast... i'm writing this just to let know my friends here in case you did the same than me...  let's face it, windows 8 will stay here, and all future versions will not bring  things back, expect software made for windows 8 only, hardware for windows 8 only.. expect discover there will not be updates of your old versions of windows.. we can't stop that, but at least we can make the transition less painful.

First thing about Windows, they make a good version, then a crappy version. So Windows 7 is good, therefore,Windows 8 will be teh suck. And it's a good idea to hear what other people have to say about it before you put your money on that. Microsoft may break that cycle at any time, but from what I hear,W8 isn't going to be the one to do it.

And yeah,I don't get the whole "new version, time to forget everything you're used to cause we changed all this shit for no reason!" design philosophy either.

Metro is the only reason that's keeping me from upgrading.  It might work for Tablets and Touch Screens, but if you use a mouse and keyboard like in 99% of all the computers here, you're going to need that Start Menu, and Microsoft somehow fails to hear that.  That's why I called Win 8 'Not Even Worth the Torrent.' If Microsoft relents and has an option to just go straight to the desktop, then I might give it a shot.  (But Start8 doesn't seem like a half-bad alternate.  And probably well worth the money.)

Honestly, I skip every other version of Windows. If enough people tell MS that they want that Start button back, It will come back. But your right, That program sounds like a god sent. :) That start button may come back someday though. They are not the super power they use to be so they NEED to listen to people or people will start using more Apple products or simply stick with older versions.

My advice, NEVER upgrade to the newest windows right away. Wait a month or so if for no other reason then to make sure it's stable. This will give them time to fix some of the major issues before you end up having to deal with them. If you can, Hold out until the first Service pack comes out, it will save you a lot of grief in the end. Just my opinion (Someone who's been using windows since 3.1)

Or it can get worse. I've seen rumors that the next windows will ONLY be a metro type interface and have no desktop at all.

What they need to do, and seem to lazy to do it is to make two versions of windows. One only for Tablets and one only for desktops. My guess is until Microsoft grows a brain in there windows department, That won't happen. I dearly hope that rumor isn't true.

What they SHOULD do is do like apple did and make the touch part an optional app. Funny thing is I was doing some reading on possibilities for windows "blue" (next code name) and learn that the guy head of windows 8 development was fired over this little fiasco :p

Right click when hovering over the start screen area in the bottom left, it brings up a context menu of anything you would need in win 7 like computer, file explorer, control panel etc.

meh I tried windows 8 in the free previews, and the RTM versions. I'll never get it even with that start 8 program. If they DON"T learn from all the complaints they get on this and get rid of metro in the next one then I'll just go 100% mac.

It took me a little while to adjust to windows 8, but now that I'm adjusted it's kind of growing on me. But hey, the nice thing about an OS is you can make it however you want it. So whatever floats your boat, basically. I think, overall, it was a good thing for MS to do, but they should bring back some of the techie side for us power users.

I do suggest you try hitting Win+X for a useful little function. ^_^

I finally broke down and got a copy of win 8 just to throw on my multy boot machine since I could get it for $15, and found that Classic Shell actually worked better than start 8, and its free. :p
