More 80s goodness: Unico! ~take that MLP!

by
The Fantastic Adventures of Unico (part 1)

I stumbled on this for the first time back in 2004. Isn't it the cutest thing ever? ^.^   I can't really understand people that hate it so much. Like they're allergic to cute or something...sheesh!  In other good news, I found out today that Unico is now out on DVD in 2012 !!!! . The manga is also being restored and digitally colorized and will be in print by Dec 2012!

I seriously need to draw this character...with Beezle...and that damned West Wind can just stay away and let him keep his memories ^.^ The gods will never notice him when he's drenched in cum anyway :)

I saw Unico in the Island of Magic on Nickelodeon when I was very small -- about 6 or 7 -- and it was about the craziest thing I ever saw up to that point; a cutesy little cartoon becomes apocalyptic and nightmarish as only anime can. Blew my little mind!

Same here. That puppet guy was scary as hell.

Kuruku, I think his name is. Yeah, he was fucking freaky. I didn't see either film as a kid (thank God!) but even as an adult, Kuruku gave me the creeps. I think it's his voice. "Toooooobyyyy..." That sort of half-chiding, half-mocking, I-know-what-you're-up-to tone he uses all of the time.

And his evil plan was pretty creepy, too... save on construction costs by using people as building materials for your gigantic evil palace and depopulate the world at the same time! Kuruku is truly an innovative wizard... puppet... thing... guy. Also really loved the doofy robot dragon that he has for security. That thing was impossible to take seriously, but lightened the movie's grim atmosphere.

Seriously can't get that creepy fucking voice out of my head now. "Toooooby!" Gah!

I saw it for the first time a while ago. It was ok, but... The guy who showed it to me  then told me how the manga ended. Man, that was a kick in the gut...

And he then went on to be one of the primary obsessed pony cartoon-devotees in what was to become a year filled with them.

You say that as if its a bad thing.

I was struck by the journal title's reference to a MLP and meant to show that these are not mutually exclusive tastes. I initially intended to respond to it rather than you but then realized we were talking about the same person.  It may be a needless attempt at efficiency!

Haha, no..I don't really believe they're mutually exclusive. The same way I don't believe that the MLP fandom is separate from the furry fandom.  The "take that MLP" was really meant as a fun jab more than a "my show is better than your show..let's fight!". Hehe, I like both shows and I'm glad that My Little Pony exists along with Unico.  ^.^

When MLP is over, and the Bronies calm down, the true fans will detach from the pony equivalent of popufurs, and those who remain will find Furry.

I do believe you're right about that.  Furry's got deeper roots. *thrusts his paw in the air* furryside mah brotha!!

this japonese people, tsk! they hate this evil twisted mind for cute and bizarre things!
I envy their ability to make things look more gay than they really are....

Bwhaha!! But doesn't Disney also have the ability to make things look more gay than they really are as well? ^_^  (cute and gay being interchangeable here)
Guil

I think cute and gay in moderation is very good!

*smiles and giggles* Oh yes me too! Being gay is like saying "hi! Let's be best friends" with your peepee! ^__^

Whippy

It's alright ^^ I noticed that a lot of early 80s rap tends to sound more positive than the later stuff. I could give your mix a spin ^^

The last sentence of your post, taken out of context, sounds like a line from a porno taking place in ancient Rome or something. Just sayin'. >;3

YES!  I remember watching a few episodes when I was a kid (back in the 80's),  I really liked it.  It's cute and drawn well, but yeah the plot is a bit on the darker side.  This is something I need to watch again.

I just finished watching the one linked (all 7 parts)   That was just as awesome as I remember it.  This is probably the reason I like anime, being it would have been the first one that I saw.

Saw both this and its sequel at the urging of a friend. Liked them both. I felt the sequel was a more solid movie though. The first Unico movie was a bit on the episodic side, sort of jumping from one plot point to another, feeling like multiple episodes of a television series strung together. Most jarring of all was the sudden intrusion of a villain into a story that didn't really need one at that point. Sure he was badass and creepy and provided a thoroughly nightmarish climax, but he just sort of... shows up close to the end with very little explanation or even a proper name (he's just "the baron"). Island of Magic had one single storyline going through it with fewer sudden plot changes, and one villain the entire way through. Still, both films are great, and I agree that they're of a type of movie that aren't really made anymore.

I think people want to hate it because Tezuka could do something that Americans can't - he makes a beautiful story with wonderful characters and breaks your heart in a way that all you can do is cry in genuine sadness without covering it up anger, regret, or any of those other emotions that try to mask it.

Unico and MLP (G4S1), both show how life could be, but to the ways that their country of origin can best understand... Personally, I am saddened that so many people here see nothing but a cartoon.
