Ok, I think I'm a bit out of the loop on this. I've not heard of another furry art site (well, a new one anyways) popping up until today. So, forgive me if I sound unimpressed.
While I'm not a big fan of FA for various reasons; Their lack of filtering out crap you don't want to see, poor search features, and having to wade through people posting up commissions they bought versus the actual artist posting...
I will give FA some credit for maintaining it's dominance for no reason other than sheer number of users. Other sites come and go on a fairly regular basis, it seems. For some reason, they just can't seem to drum up the user base to support the artists. It's a vicious cycle- without the artists, the average user won't come. Without the average user, the artist feels like their displaying to an empty room and eventually leave.
I've not been able to actually check out the Weasyl, since it was down when I tried, and is most likely still down as I write this. However, what little information I could get from elsewhere tells me that it is a subscription supported site. I'm not really sure this is a good idea, right off the bat.
With such a fresh site, it seems that It would be hard to justify investing in a paid account when:
1) It seems that the site pops up, then goes back down again fairly quick.
2) There aren't that many people to view your account yet.
Personally, I see Weasyl having strong initial support, then it will stagnate as they struggle to lure more people in.
Hopefully, sometime soon I will be able to actually check out the site and see what all the hubbub is about. Who knows, I may even move my stuff there if it seems worthy enough. It would be nice to have a site that has good features and isn't swimming in cub porn.
