Hiring a web designer, but need a advice

by
I want to make a big redesign on palcomix site.. much changes, but basically i want to turn palcomix in a site like DA, inkbunny or FA.. but for comics... where people will be able to create an account, upload their comics, comment...

for practical reason i need to work very close with this person (someone from my city)
what i need to know is, what kind of knowledge/skills this person will require? ...i mean, i know html, but obviously that's not enough for programming something like this place... php? java? i need to know what to requirement ask before request someone for the work.

Thank u so much in advance guy

I might know of a person who can help you answer these questions. I'll see if I can get him to contact you.

Unfortunately, I know no such person. :(
But as for feedback to this idea, I think it is very nice! And I would be very interested in making an account in the website.
Anyways, I wish you luck with your search, my friend. ~

Can't help you, but I do like that idea.  Maybe you can ask some of the Ink Bunny staff?  At least one of them must know what needs to be done.

heh.. sadly i need the programer to work here, basically i was asking what kind of skills/knowledge of programs you need to do something like this place.. heh.. i think i know now :)  i hope if i make this thing work to have you as member there :)

I meant you can ask them about the knowledge/skills required.

And, yes, if you do this I would like to put my Rossweisse comic there.

I do that sort of thing professionally (but obviously not from your city... i don't think).  Anyways, if you're trying to make something like that, its gonna be a HUGE job.  Php, JS, SQL servers.  Probably about a hundred cumulitive man hours worth of coding.  Then they have to do well on design, layout, functionality.  Good luck because its a huge, HUGE job

yeah.. that's what i was suspecting.. heheh.. it will be a big investment too :)  but i think it will work, thanks for your advices,

XValentine is completely correct, a job like this is absolutely massive, and the requirements are pretty numerous. AJAX, SQL, definitely php, probably a ton of other stuff as well, depending on what all you want, not to mention someone to do the actual layout, design, and graphics, since I'm not sure exactly how likely such a project would be doable with only one person, it sounds to me more like something that would need a small team. Something like that would probably prove a bigger drain on your servers too, depending on what you're running on, so you might have to be careful about that, unless you're running palcomix on a server with a lot more power/space than you need now, something like you describe would probably require quite a bit more than relatively static pages.

i think i can help with layout, design and graphics :)  that's one of the reasons i need the guy to be to be peruvian too.. heheh ...thanks for your advice...  (what is AJAX?) ...at the beggining.. since the site will be focused on comics, will not be a big or complicated site... i know it will take months of work but it will worth it :)

A better description of AJAX than I could give.
Anyways, while it's certainly a rather huge undertaking, I would indeed say that it's doable just so long as you stick with it and you have the means to fund such a project.
I have seen some mention of needing to hire people to moniter what's posted, and I'd like to add that, by law, you're not required to do so. A site isn't liable for user generated or posted content so long as they take down anything that's reported in a timely manner. Sites like dA, Inkbunny, and youtube are simply far, far too large for everything posted to be checked, and the same would apply to your idea, so that's one expense you don't really need to worry about, at least =P

"Definitely PHP". You be trolling?

There's definitely a lot of better choices than PHP. Everyone just does PHP because it's popular and theres many people who do it, so you "can't be wrong, right?!". I don't know how PHP went from "Personal Home Page" to big stuff, honestly... Maybe because it's so hacky and you can do all sorts of wrong tihngs and it will never complain :D

Same here.  I've got a Web comic project in Kickstarter, http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1716370612/the-bal... , and I'd be honored to have it in a site like yours.

I do have an associates degree in web design and maintenance, but I doubt that I would be someone you are looking for.  I never created a site before unfortunatley, but if you need someone like an intern, I would not mind helping out who ever you hire for this job.

You really have about 2 options here, either php or asp. If you go with php you can run it off an appache server which is free. If you go with ASP, you can code in either VB or C#, but you need IIS which is not free a server.

I like ASP because of the power of having a compiled language behind it, but php is powerful enough as that's what runs most sites out there as it is. They would also have to know SQL or maybe MySQL depending what you choose, and maybe some javascript. AJAX is nice, it's what they use to prevent the screen flickering on postbacks, but not necessary. There are also other tools that are nice, and can make your site look better and are easier to work with, but once again not necessary.

As has been pointed out, this is a HUGE job if you really want a site like IB/FA/DA. You might be better off looking into a cheap CMS (content management system). Good luck!

Yeah..  my cousing suggested me to use a CMS, the thing is .. is there a CMS that can work close to these sites?

(i know is a big job.. but still i'll give it a try :) )

Warning! Very expensive and very involved is what you need to realize. You will practically be paying people to monitor such a site 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. =+O

i know i know,  most for sure it will not be big as these places.. but still i want to make some modifications ot the current site :) at least adding a easier way to update and a comments system :)   people suggest me a CMS instead..  we will see

If you recall I warned you about the voracity of users a few years ago... That still applies to your goal here as well as it did to Palcomics. The site WILL grow beyond the scope you imagine simply due to the fact that you offer so much content that appeals to so many users. =+o

No matter what you'll have to register and pay for a DNS server yearly, I have no idea what the fees are for that as I'm just getting started with Network Administration myself. I'm preparing to take the CompTIA A+ certification on a self taught basis and this book is about 1500 pages of info, not terribly difficult but it may help you get a basic understanding of what yer going up against. You will be forced to go big (if not bigger) than this or any other site you are on as you will be delivering expected content. =+S

Also something to consider, you will have to engage a legal team to fight for your use of copyrighted characters in explicit form, and believe me the entertainment industry is well budgeted for such fights and most that host sites with such content are shut down within a few months. Especially Warner Brother content is attacked regularly, only the Furvert site had lasted for many years before it got killed. =+{

Many things to consider my friend and my best wishes to you. =+D

They would need to know at least PHP and HTML. For best results, though, you'd want someone who is skilled with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL.

No need for anything like Java, though, that's a programming language. And a dying one at that.

Also, if you're putting out an advertisement for this, say you're looking for a web developer, as we deal with the server side stuff. Web designers concentrate largely on making things pretty, and generally don't have knowledge of server-side scripting or databases.

Well. This is pretty intrigueing! I can't help with the web designing part, but I love the idea! I'm looking to start making some short comics very soon, in fact it's what I'm working on at the moment. So a website that specializes in just such a thing would be awesome!

Web designers need quite a few things to take on a project like that. Look for someone who is well versed with html/css for your visual appeal, someone with php/js/ advanced scripting skills for the code, someone with extensive knowledge of security and networks to keep you from being hacked or taken down, and finally someone who knows how to take criticism and work well on a team.

That combonation is quite hard and usually sites that are built on a format like that are built on a platform and use a theme. For instance I am currently running coppermine bridged with phpbb3 and ldap'd to a reference server. If you are modifying a prebuild like I am you should find someone who is good with php/css/html so that they can modify the parts of the code you need.

OH YEAH you are also going to need someone who knows how to navigate either linux or windows server 2008, WAMP, specifically apache, configure the firewall correctly, or as that other guy said above me use microsofts pay to play version with a full compiler.

Universities use CMS if it helps.

Setting something like this up yourself isnt particularly hard. Behind the scenes it is a pretty user friendly system for admin. Honestly though I don't have a very good eye for visuals so I usually have a friend pick the colors or something.

I'm familiar with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, MySQL, PHP, Perl, Ruby, and so on. I'm not in Peru, though, but if you need some assistance, I'd be glad to lend a paw.

You'll need someone with HTML, Java, PHP, and probably a little "hacking" in the true definition not Hollywood's definition; then obviously Photoshop and flash. I mentioned the hacker because of security needing to be tight :)

A website devoted to the submission of furry webcomics? That would kick ass. You could classify genre's like action or over 18. . . . unless it'll all be mature , which I'd be cool with that. I hope you get this started, I'd love to feature work on there. =3
