Feedback on streams and other art stuff

So! I would say that at least for myself, the sketch streaming experiment seems to have gone quite well. It's fun, it gets me drawing very regularly, and it helps me continue existing without resorting to very raccoonish habits.

But I'd like to get some outside input! How is it working out for everyone else? Has my Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday model served availability well enough? Do you think sketches get done in a decent amount of time?

What about the pricing model? I've only opened up for up to two characters thus far, but is there a desire for more options? Would people like me to revisit sketches I've done for them before and apply color to them for a small fee? If there's any way you think I can expand to widen what I'm offering, I'd love to know about it!

I've also been trying to sprinkle some finished artwork here and there, lest everybody think all I do are sketches. My coloring is improving slowly. I'd like to get back into painting, but that's a big time sink. Any complaints about the frequency of uploads? I try to keep it to one or two a day.

Well... I for one think they've been great, although I've only attended three so far~ They get done surprisingly quickly for how good they are, so I don't think time is much of an issue.

More options are always nice - I've had a few ideas and then discarded them when I realised they'd need more than two characters. >.> And I think colouring sketches would be neat as well, although that might depend on how quickly you can colour things?

I dunno. Those are my thoughts anyway~

I think you'd be surprised how quickly I can color something in, provided I have a proper reference. Shading and everything.

So long as what you need colouring is pearl-shaded.

Yeah. I'd hafta say, adding the option to do three-character commissions at minimum would be awesome.  I have tons of ideas for commissions that'd require the space to do a third character... but I've had to discard 'em for the most part...  Not so interested in coloring pics, honestly.  I'm weird in that I generally prefer lineart to colored works.  As for the frequency, it's working fine, but to keep up with demand, you might hafta add a fourth stream. ^_^;;;;

Oh, I'm sure you can expand to offer more services...in fact, I have a few sketches in mind where you do just that very thing!

All kidding aside, it looks like you're getting a bit of a backlog, even streaming three times a week.  If anything, I'd suggest raising prices a bit.  Some artists have experimented with offering private streams at an hourly rate, and your offering of color is intriguing.  Although, admittedly it would depend on how long it takes and how much it costs.  The time of the streams in the late evening hour is a bit troublesome for some on the eastern seaboard with the nine-to-five style of job. I'd suggest trying to vary the start/end time of streaming at least once per week.

As far as uploads go, I think your fans seem to be the type who are more than comfortable with massive quantities of production and it seems to serve little purpose to hold back unless you're trying to save finished works to more evenly punctuate your streaming.

On the subject of more characters per sketch, I'm sure there would be takers, but you'd want to charge a flat rate per character in order to offset the increased amount of time.  I'd honestly suggest saving anything more than three for non-stream commissions, as this risks adding significantly to either the length of your list or the time of your streams.

Otherwise, I'm sore and tired.  My fellow opener didn't show up for work today, so I ran the department by myself for over five hours and forgot my wallet ontop of it all, so didn't get lunch until after I returned home.  Sore, tired, abused, and didn't even get a meal out of it.  Wal-Mart makes for a crappy date.

Walmart is more like being in an abusive relationship from what I can tell but  a lot of retail is a  bit rough some more then others.

The dates have been good so far and for me worked out around my own work schedule. You could probably maybe price a bit higher but well not a lot of people would probably like that :P

You could also add a price for 3 characters but I'm personally fine with a 2 character limit.

I do greatly enjoy the streaming and sketches Nori-sir. Tis great fun to watch. As well, your prices and such are just as fine

I'm enjoying attending yours =3 good fun, not much disruption, and excellent prices that make even the tightest budget work out just dandy <3

Though color would be nice, it would be a bit of a time killer to color mid-stream and make the rest of the line wait for it. Your pace is working so smoothly you get a whole line of happy customers right now. I would say coloring should be handled separately as not to ruin the flow you got going.

I just hope there's no price hikes, right now its making people happy to be able to afford stuff, and the thing that almost always happens with most artists is that soon after, the prices hike up and less and less people can afford until only a fraction of the same people who enjoy your work can afford to pay for it.

To be honest despite what I just said that might be different; I wouldn't change a darn thing <3. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

Well, I don't anticipate any kind of price hike. It's been working fairly well for me, and demand is more important than per-diem profit. Better for the customer, better for the artist, as long as frequency is something you can swing. And I can swing.

I haven't attended any on account of not having money to spend, but I think the frequency is good. Not too often, not too rare. If you have a backlog or something then maybe up the amount a bit, but I wouldn't know.

Maybe 3 character max. 4 or more would take too much time for a stream.

How dare you charge for colouring when I can do just as good for free? Sure, I can't shade, but my flats are pretty well done.
Norithics
11 years, 8 months ago
Ah, but it's the shading that's the hardest, and most rewarding part. ; )
Seth65
11 years, 8 months ago
But if you screw up the shading, you can ruin the picture. At least with flats that doesn't happen, unless you do a really bad job of it.
Norithics
11 years, 8 months ago
Well duh, if you screw up any stage, the picture's going to suck. \=P

You're making zero sense. I offer to color for a fee because I'm a professional- I have an incredibly small margin of error. I've drawn literally thousands of pictures at this point. And even if I did mess up, it's a stream- anybody could just say something and I'd fix it.

So, I have no idea what you're smoking.

Sorry. I was trying to be funny but I didn't word it right so it wasn't, but I couldn't get back in time to fix it. Sorry.

Tuesday Thursday Saturday is all the days I'm busiest doing stuff, although I try to make it as best as I can. Hardly your fault that everything in my life apparently happens those days, of course so I can't expect you to move it. With the options of more characters or color, you could always just make the option technically available and see if people go for it.

So far think overall its been good. PLenty odf days to watch you stream or potentially commission you, speeds decent, crowds been good, etc.

On the more-than-two-character part, agree with Eviscerator - When you go past 2 characters for simple and meant-to-be-quick sketchmissions, the risk of it bogging down how long it takes to finish a pic goes up a good bit.  Either keep them for off-stream commissions or charge a good bit more for them to defer it from happening too often/pay for the extra time/labor put in and less time for others ot get their pics done in that stream.

Your pricing is definitely nice.  But eventually, may be worth a price increase to a. benefit yourself some more, and maybe curve how many and how often you get commissions per stream and not have much if any of a backlog to deal with in the next streams.

As for timing of the streams? Eh, Eviscerator has a point - maybe for one stream or two, change the hours you are on?  You'll never have the perfect day or perfect time to stream that everyone can make it to all the time, but it may bring in some new viewers and customers you don't currently get.

And for your works not in the stream (personal projects, full blown commissions, etc.), whats plans on those?  Don't want to forget those things.

Marcleonhardt streams very often, and he offers a commissioner to be able to pay to have a whole stream dedicated to them (ie. they get 6 pics or so in the stream, he can choose if others get included in the pics, etc).  But others that day don't get to get a commission drawn. I forget the limits/restrictions he has for that, but something to consider down the road perhaps?

And each stream does not *have* to be a sketchmission stream - Can always mix it up and have some be for you working on your own projects or progressing commissions.  Playing a game, etc.

Hope that helps!

From the two I was able to make it too, they were really really fun. I have a few more ideas I myself would love to get seen drawn, but they require a third additional character here and there. Though, most of the things you mention is pretty much what I'd want. Maybe some coloring and touch ups on existing sketches for a small fee and such.

As for the timing, I'm only really ever 100% available to join is on Tuesday, the other two days being kinda hit and miss because of my work. Though, I will admit, the backlog can be a bit tiny intimidating when someone new joins the list and if people who are already on it add more slots to the que.

They work fine for me. Though i can't really pop in anymore now that I'm on limited internet. Again.

Perhaps you could experiment; you could have a stream where you offer three-character sketches, and see how it goes.  No sense in committing to something 'til you're sure you won't get bogged down.
JapVixen

I think everything's OK. Adding third char would enlarge the time of doing sketches, for meh :/

I'd like the option to go back and add color, perhaps.
Sure, I could add color on my own (eventually, if I ever get a working replacement tablet, because using a mouse for this sucks), but it'd be nice to have choices.

I would keep the character limit capped at two, to allow for reasonable queue execution, considering things.

Also, might I suggest a pair of things:
1: Consider a Google Docs form for idea submission.
A number of artists that I have also watched have moved this way to track what's done, undone, etc., and it does make a difference in logistics. While the current audience you have are Inkbunny users (as far as I know), if you end up with a visitor that wants something without touching Inkbunny for some reason, this gives them a choice. You can turn off input on a form with just a couple of clicks, to keep people from just submitting 30 or 50 ideas while you're offline.

2: Consider accepting payment forms other than PayPal, just in case they try to play the dick role and screw you on something. At least for your US customers, Dwolla has been pretty neato-keen from my experiences. All one needs for Dwolla setup, as of the time I last did it was a credit union (or bank) account. No credit cards needed or accepted.
Likewise, some people accept those Second Life dollars, but cashing them out to real USD takes a little effort in the sense that you need to get the currency to some point for cashing out. You could directly cash out through Linden Research, but receiving cash-outs can take several days that way. VirWoX is faster about cashing out, but I think they have limits. Annoyingly, accepting SLL tends to route your payments back through PayPal to get your funds quickly.

Even though I haven't availed myself of your services, I think you have fair prices and turnaround times. Nothing you currently offer is broken, so don't fix that. But you have room to offer more and broader services, so I'll encourage you to do so.

first off i think your streams are great. they have a good flow of pace and its a fun time. i really enjoy watching you work personaly and its a fun thing to hang out with everyone.

i think your prices are fair and i think it would be cool to offer a third character for a little more. im sure many people have ideas that they would gladly pay more for and you work fast enough i doubt it would upset your workflow or anything. offering colors would be cool too i have no idea on price for that though but ive seen enough of your colored pieces to know that id like to have it avalible XD

Don't fix what isn't broken, my man. I haven't noticed anybody complaining, and it seems to be working out well on both ends of things. I will say I like livestream a bit more than the other one, if only because I enjoy hearing the dulcet tones of your sultry voice calling me a cocklord.

As far as the scheduling goes, it hardly works for me. x3 I only make it to maybe one stream a week due to work scheduling, but there's really not anything I can do about that. I'll continue to get in when I can!

But everything seems fair. Sketch commissions are just little sketches that are meant to not take long and be just plain fun. Opening up to more might just make that take longer and throw things off... I bet people are impatient enough already! So I say do what you're doing. It's fine and dandy, and if it works for you, then it works for us.
SenGrisane

You could offer slave streams, where you offer a certain amount of time to the commissioner. And he can then ask for 1 detailed or several sketches.
rick2tails

your streams are great. I would ask you offer colorings either in or out of stream for sketches that youve done. Id also suggest  maybe making a 3 character drawing for $12-15 would be a welcome addition. 3 characters should be the max though, after that it gets too  time consuming I think.I only ask for 3somes since we can then see things like spitroasts ! *evil grin*
On a selfish note, if you were open to starting at 1pm or noon that would work better for me personally to catch the early part of streams better since I usually  take a nap before the start of one since I need sleep somewhere. i try to get a few hours of sleep before the stream and then an hour or 2 after .But I think Im probably in the minority there other then your European fans.

Hey, Nori, I have a question.

Would I be able to pay you $60 now for future streams? I recently won some money, and I am having someone pay on my behalf.
OdddhornLonghorn

Actually, never mind. That's too much to put on you, and unfair to others.

Sorry about that.

One thing I'd suggest is a list of things you will or won't draw, whichever's shorter :)

Everything sounds good to me, man.
Again, when I can get some cash loaded onto fuckin' PayPal, I'll totally drop you some for a commish.
strawkitty
11 years, 8 months ago
Well the current time schedule coupled with my +2 GMT means that I can only catch the start or end of the stream unless I stay up the whole night but that isn't as big a problem on Saturdays. Mostly though I have just plain forgotten that there was a stream starting until it's too late since I don't use IB constantly. :O

So I don't have any real complaints and you seem to be getting plenty commissioners anyhow =)

Well, all of those days I'm working, so it's not *ideal* for me.  but I've been able to catch the tail end of one or two.
