What keeps you in the fandom?

Everyone can pretty easily identify their introduction into the fandom. What cartoon was their favorite, who who resonated the most with them or who introduced them to it.

But how about why you're still in the fandom?

Ever since the drama a few months ago around here, my appetite for the fandom's antics has cooled significantly. I'm not discounting my depression's effect on my ability to stay interested in anything, but furry...I dunno. I'm just not interested in it the same way as I was before. I don't peruse art or stories. I certainly don't write. I don't attend art streams or host my own gamestreams anymore.

It's more than just that. I'm losing interest in all my hobbies now. I spend a lot of time just staring at my computer screen doing nothing these days because I can't be bothered to turn on a console and play something. And it's been like this for a while.

inb4 "sounds like depression, bro." Yeah, it probably is. It could also be bipolar disorder, but given the skew in the ratio of good days to bad days very heavily toward bad days, with the ratio becoming more and more skewed weekly, it's pretty likely that it's depression. I can't afford therapy, and most GP's are leery about prescribing SSRI's to someone with suicidal ideation, since in the early stages of the meds that often takes away the demotivation to do anything without actually removing the bad feelings.

ANYWAY

I guess I'm looking for reasons to stay around and be interested in the fandom. Maybe I can vicariously enjoy the fandom through others for a while until I'm back on my feet emotionally again.

You have so many friends that care about you + you are possibly one of the most down to earth person I know in the fandom

Thank you. I try to be real and legit, but it doesn't seem to jive very well with how the world works all the time.

All the great people I met that have the same interest as me :3

The people I've met that I'm close with go beyond the fandom for me. Even if I did leave (I don't think I'm going to, maybe just a break or something), I'd still have them in my life.

A break sounds like a great idea ^.^ have some time to release all the stress and stuff.
I wish you the best of luck Flynn!

I don't know how you are personally, but for me, the fandom for me is a place where I can meet people with the same interests as myself, The fact I have a fursona is because people feel more comfortable around here if someone else is identifiable as as certain specie (though I have grown to like my fursona quite a bit, I don't go around submitting to butch women with clitoris-penises like spotted hyenas actually do). I guess it helps to regulate your time mingled within the fandom and with other things. I'm quite content to sit inside all day and read, or watch American TV shows and not spend any time on FA for example.

I don't know anything about depression, so I can't really help in that regard other than advise you try other hobbies, like walking, or... marathon masturbating.

I hope you get out of your rut soon, though. All the best.

Ever notice that people usually fraternize within their taxonomic family? About 95% of the people I talk to regularly are canids.

Thank you for the well wishes.

I love the art, and I've met some people here that I really enjoy chatting with.

The friends, the great people to meet, that small moment when you watch a cartoon you like, the occasional time when I decide "I want to draw something". It's not much, but it's the little things that keeps me going.

I guess I'm having a hard time seeing the little things in the shadow of the big thing that's robbing me of my interest in things. But I'll do my best to keep an eye out for them.

Yeah, the people are a pretty special aspect of the fandom to me. But the more and more I withdraw...well, you know how it goes.

I think the reason that I am involved with (and have since become more active within) the furry community is because it's a place where one can vicariously throw themselves without fear of being judged or made fun of, because 1) This fandom takes place primarily on the internet, where anonymity is pretty easy to do, and 2) Because this fandom is more than likely filled with people who are just as (if not more) bizarro than YOU are.

This fandom in particular has been a place where a very specific kind of "play-pretending" has been taking place ever since it became a thing (Ie: "This is what I look like as a walking talking Red Wolf"). And it's very freeing in a way to be able to confess your nerdy-heart out about how much you loved the Redwall books, or how Disney's Robin Hood was your favorite movie as a kid cause the titular character was such a badass and it just made it all the better in your mind cause he was a freaking ANIMAL. Because this affinity for fuzzy animal characters is easy to keep secret, cause the fandom exists primarily on the internet, participation in it is very much like singing in the shower -- nobody can see you do it, but you're the only person who gets anything out of it anyway. So who cares if someone sees? Let your freak flag fly, and you sing every VERSE of the National Anthem to those shower walls if you feel like it!

It's a good feeling to know that there are people in this world who express the same amount of ridiculous enthusiasm for something as seemingly pointless as talking cartoon animal people -- something you should have (in theory) outgrown when you were around 11 years old. There's a feeling of belonging in really ANY internet community or fandom, furry or no (Trekkies, Bronies, Potterheads, etc). The more you put into your internet affinity, no matter what it is, the more you get back. So I guess it's just the feeling of belonging you get when you throw yourself out there on the internet that keeps me here -- whether it's attending artstreams, making your own stories/art, or just telling artists you admire how much you like their work on their Facebook/Twitter/FurAffinity/Inkbunny.

Even though you'd maybe never do it in public, it's REALLY nice to just sing in the shower sometimes, as long and as loud as the spirit moves you.

Why am I still in the fandom? I enjoy the subject matter overall, always have. Through the years I've met many wonderful people who have taught me a lot along the way. I like some of the things furry stands for (while disliking some of the thinks furry is known for), and enjoy the more open mentality that furs generally share. I don't agree with everything that goes on, but a lot of the negativity comes from reactions mostly from outside of the fandom, while some of it from inside the fandom. So no it's not perfect, but nothing is so you can't really fault it for that. At least that's what my groggy mind has produced at this moment. X3

What drama are you talking about? There's always drama happening. Just depends on which drama you decide to let effect you. I've been trying to ignore it all myself, so far it's working fairly well. But interest is harder to control, some people just move away while others move closer. It's just how that goes. Maybe your time as a furry is done? Got everything you needed out of it and it's time to move on maybe? Certainly a possibility.

I just hope your situation gets better, I'm sure that will help clear your mind and make all of this a lot easier to understand. For now just focus on what's important; your happiness. Not much of a point of doing much else if you're upset and such. [hugs]
