I got the parts today around 7:30pm 9__9 After waiting since 8am!!!!!!!!.....argghhhh! lol!!
Putting the heatsink on wasn't as hard as the badly worded instructions made it sound. I made a complete mess of myself with thermal paste ^/////^ and just about died when I thought I bend a socket pin. But I was able to bend it back rather easily...it was just soooo damn tiny! After finally getting everything put together, I flipped the power switch and voila! This colorful machine hummed to life!

The bios had no trouble recognizing my mouse after I plugged in it's wirelss dongle. It was really clean and easy to navigate too. The CPU had a temp of about 35c idling there. I'm so damn happy to have a machine like this. I haven't had a really up to date computer in....forever!! Even in 2008, I still asked for something mid range.  But this is definitely not "just scraping by" :D  I can't wait to see how this thing chews through photoshop, painter, and sai XD

Atm, I'm still waiting on my SSD to arrive in the mail so I can install windows. Should be here Wednesday. Till then...I feel like a guy driving around in a 1960s VW beetle while I have a ferrari sitting in the driveway without wheels.

Oh the pain...oh the torture...lol! THANK YOU GUYS SOOOO MUCH  FOR HELPING ME BUILD THIS!!!!!!!!! I promise to do some bad ass painting with it  ^____^

Never been a fan of fans with all the tacky leds on them but this just made me notice the my front one that had red lights isn't powered at all! So for who knows how long my full size case has been running with just a single intake fan o.o
arkthebear

LEDs on your fans? Nothing that a bit of snippy snip can't fix, provided the fan is wired in a way that allows you to do that.

I've been messing with heatsink paste lately too. I had to swap CPUs between 3 different motherboards. You just use a very, very small amount and spread it out thinly with an old credit card or something. The heat spreader on modern CPUs makes it pretty safe to screw up.

Now, back in the bad old days with exposed die CPUs like the Athlon XP? God, what a nightmare. The HSFs back in those days too, uggh, so much force needed to be applied it was insane. Every time attaching one I felt like the motherboard was going to snap.

Oh god, so true! Though you don't actually have to spread the thermal paste, that's a bit of a misconception. As long as you don't put too much on, and you put the heatsink on right away, the paste will spread evenly once the pressure is applied. They actually taught me that in a college course. x3
arkthebear
6 years, 2 months ago
Well, no, but it makes it easier to clean up if you take it off. Excess paste is nasty and annoying.
BunnyFoxglove
6 years, 2 months ago
Yush~ You don't actually want excess paste squishing out the sides either. It doesn't hurt to spread it first, but once you're familiar with how much to put on you don't need to.

Especially silver paste....oh gods..that stuff is conductive!

I'm sorry none of my commish ideas could help, and I'm still saving up to them... :(

It's alright. We tend to have different tastes in things anyway, heh ^^

Bent pin?  No sweat, mechanical pencils take care of them pretty well.
Made a mess of the thermal paste?  Been there, done that.

But all this reminds me that I've recently swapped motherboards in my rig.  Absolutely thoroughly surprising that it took me about 45 minutes to do and went off without a hitch.

^.^ Wow, that's pretty fast! I wish I actually did all this more often, but I only do it when I need to upgrade my own machine which is every couple of years. So...I kinda loose my edge by then hah! Feels like I need to play catch up every single time too. Not just with with parts are good to have, but what they do and which OS to use, which games to try etc. It's weird how much a few chucks of hardware can make you totally revamp your computing experience.

Thanks for the advice btw ^^; it's a lot better knowing I'm not the only one there! I just about threw up after bending that pin on my brand new motherboard ^^;

I've been there before. Between '03 and '07 I didn't do ANY upgrades to my rig. Missed out on 754/939 Athlon 64 goodness. Was shortly after I started playing wow that I finally had a reason to upgrade. Stormwind for me before I upgraded was like Shattrath or Dalaran was for most.

That heatsink and fan combo is absolutely excessive XD
Whippy
6 years, 2 months ago
Haha!!! Yush!!! ^_^ I was amazed at the size of that thing too!! But then I thought "if this doesn't keep it cool, nothing will!". I also worried a lot that the fan would block a RAM slot, but it stopped just short of any overlapping :D

You are gonna need a graphics card bro
Ramblo

Graphics acceleration is built into the i7.

I have two, I just haven't put one in yet. They're older cards, but should do until I feel like I really need to upgrade. I don't play a lot of super high end games or anything hehe.

Whippy

Yesh ^////^ Ya caught me lol. That rear fan is pretty old by now heh, I really should buy a new one and get my case fans to match.

Whippy
6 years, 2 months ago
Yush!! ^_^ *squeezes you tightly*  Only things left to upgrade in this PC are the video card (i'll get another nvidia some day), the case fans (just wanted to get them to match) , and the case itself (not really a bad case, it just has a broken plastic front end. Gonna try to fix it up with some screws though)

This machine rocks in so many ways though ^^ It's got a graphical BIOS that easily detected my mouse. It looks like it can handle anything I throw at it now.

... which will bring the total to 12 XD
Whippy

7 fans!!!?? Holy crap! :D I think your PC really blows!!!
CosmicMutt
6 years, 2 months ago
...that was terrible XD
and no i actually have 8, forgot about the second one on my heatsink
Whippy
6 years, 2 months ago
Haha!!! I had to say it! It just fit :D
Oh, btw, do you think it would be better to have that top "blue" fan over the heatsink's exhaust rather than above it's intake?  I can't make up my mind over it ^^;
CosmicMutt
6 years, 2 months ago
yus! that is a really pretty shade of blue, and that shows up better than the white. i say go for it! and im gonna try to add 2 other fans sometime today actually. since you shared pics of yours want me to share some of mine? XP
Whippy

planning on adding either 2-6 more fans to the plexiglass panel, they will be regular black fans until i get a half million to pay for all the blue!~
Whippy
6 years, 2 months ago
Hmm...does your case have any holes to allow for putting cables through? You might be able to clean up a lot of those cables in your case there. Also, I really like your power/reset cable. It would look really cool having it go vertically down your case somehow. Blue sata cables are sexy too ^^
CosmicMutt
6 years, 2 months ago
unfortunately it doesnt :/ and im really not sure what power/reset cable your talking about.. also my other blue sata cables went missing D:
Whippy
6 years, 2 months ago
Oh, I was talking about the black/green/yellow/red cable laying at the bottom of your case there. It looks really long. Could probably do some interesting things with it. Hmm, that sucks about not having any cables holes, but!! do you see that space between the edge of the case and the hard drive bays? You could snake some of your cables into there no problem. I find using colored duct tape is a very easy way to bundle up sata cable and attach other cables to the metal.  Heck, if you want, I could make a drawing of what I mean.
CosmicMutt
6 years, 2 months ago
that would be great because im not sure what your trying to describe!
and yus i love haiving a reset button and hdd indicator, because i never see those anymore
CosmicMutt
6 years, 2 months ago
hell, now that i looked at the case and plexiglass i can form a wall of fans XD

Whippy
6 years, 2 months ago
Omg..lol. Uhmm...i think that's a bit overkill :D

As for what i meant...here's one example:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/43927622/pix/pc_cable_example.jpg

Mainly, it's just getting cables out of the way by wrapping them around larger things or just bundling them up to do something with that extra length rather than have it in a tangle ^^
CosmicMutt
6 years, 2 months ago
ill try to do that on a day when i have more free time, and thanks for the example!
also, i could do more than a wall.. i have around 30 extra fans XD
Whippy
6 years, 2 months ago
Yer welcome ^_^
And you has A LOT of fans! I guess you collected a lot of spare PC parts over the years? XD
CosmicMutt
6 years, 2 months ago
over the years? XD more like a month ago.
went through a load of old powersupplies and raped them for copper and fans XD

Whippy

*shrugs* I've had way worse luck with an Asus motherboard.  A ton of people seem to love ASRock, so I thought I would give them a chance.  I miss my old Soyo Dragon though. I had that board for 6 years and the only problem I had was when the video card fan stopped running while I was away and burned the audio chip on the board.

I read some of the reviews of this ASRock board on newegg. Most people were just bitching about it not supporting ivy bridge right out of the box...pfff.

actually i had an asrock 4-core duo for a test bench, it did DDR and DDR2 as well as PCI PCI-X ang AGP.... i touched the hell out of that board testing bad ram, bad cards and bad hard drives and it lasted over 3 years.  but i know more then a few people that haven't had such good luck..... never buy a computer built on a Monday or Friday i guess
