Home Again

I just got back from my astonishing Canada trip. It was a blast, start to finish. This was due largely to my awesome pals Robby and Relee.

What all did I do? Well...

I saw Avenue Q, I went to Condition: Blue, I went to a humongous flea market nestled in the woods, I drank lots of Orangina and Five Alive, I ate lots of Kinder Eggs, I drove a tiny pointy RC ice cream truck, I went to innumerable comics/collectibles shops and resale stores, I got skritched and hugged a lot, I played Cards Against Humanity, I played Mouse Guard the RPG as Liam the scout, I commissioned KV1NN4 for a drop-dead perfect pic of Fifi wearing Gadget's coveralls, I ate poutine, I ate Mozza burgers, I ate at a charming little Chinese place called the OK Restaurant, I slept on a big comfy couch, I found perfect knockoff G1 Seekers at a dollar store, I found a damn-near-new Alternators Hound in a Value Village for $2.99, I found Ultimate Optimus Prime in a comics shop for thirty bucks while he shelfwarmed at $90 everywhere else, I got to see a two-year-old being enchanted by fursuiters, I participated in an epic Nerf tournament, I watched hours upon hours of Dennou Coil and Hell Teacher Nube, I printed up copies of my new novel's prologue to distribute at the con (then promptly forgot them at home), I bought three new cuddly plushies: two possums and a hyena, I gave a guy at the con money to help him buy a plush dragon and he was completely floored, I rode around in a customized Plymouth muscle car with the license plate "YIFFY", I found out that Canadian $100 bills have freakin' plastic windows in them, I bought a lot of books, I helped a friend hunt for Pony merchandise, I took so many pictures there was only one slot left on my memory card at the end of the trip.

I had an absolutely amazing time with wonderful friends and, as much as I'm glad to be back to normalcy, I wouldn't have traded an instant of it for anything.

Also, It's weird that I can truthfully say that I was in Washington during Obama's inaguration, and in London during the Olympics. ;)

Always awesome. I'm still on the lookout for opportunities to get a picture taken of me with a road sign for SR-388 and a plush Metroid.

Plush Metroid acquisition still pending.

AlexReynard

I heard of that one, actually. It was really hard deciding on whether to go to that one or the furry con. All things considered, much as I like AVGN, I can't think of that con could've topped the one I went to. :3

I am very disappoint in the US for not embracing poutine. It seems like such a natural match! We like fries, we like cheese, we like gravy!

Understood, but can you believe that there are some people who don't even have such fancy things.
We must spread the word of bacon I mean ham err I mean baco- aww you know what I mean.

It sounds like you had a busy and entertaining trip. You did lots of entertaining things that you don't usually get to do and eat lots of foods you don't normally get to try. Dude you must be exausted! I wonder how long it will take you to construct all those Kinder Egg toys. What sorts of strange regional foods and drinks and customs and accents did you encounter? And what's this about the moose money- you're a texan or something, what do you think about the money with plastic windows? I'd also like to hear your opinion of Value Village (not 'Santa's', 'Value') and why you went to Canada for a Pony hunt. :)

>Dude you must be exausted!

Yes, but mixed with a lot of happiness and satisfaction!

>I wonder how long it will take you to construct all those Kinder Egg toys.

Been home a week now and still two left!

>What sorts of strange regional foods and drinks and customs and accents did you encounter?

Not too much that wasn't pretty similar to America. Except the A&W has a totally different menu, and it is magnitudes better. Also, Five Alive is plentiful (orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit and tangerine juice). I heard only a handful of people say 'eh'.

>you're a texan or something,

MICHIGANDER!!!

>what do you think about the money with plastic windows?

It's pretty badass.

>I'd also like to hear your opinion of Value Village (not 'Santa's', 'Value')

I went to several. I definitely like that they have much more toys (and in better condition) than the American ones. Got quite a few books there too. I noticed there seemed to be more resale stores in Canada in general.

>and why you went to Canada for a Pony hunt. :)

Actually, it was mostly me accompanying my pal Ron on his hunt for Ponies in the states. We actually encountered the rare, correctly-colored white Celestia!

I did get a cute tiny Pinkie while I was there though.

welcome back (smiles) I see that you enjoyed your trip. One of my favorite webcomics was delayed until the artist came back from condition blue. Still I find it difficult to comprehend the fact that Canadian $100 bills have plastic windows on them, doesn't that get expensive and wasteful to use all that plastic?
Alfador
11 years, 8 months ago
It IS a $100 bill after all. I'd imagine the plastic window is a tiny fraction of the value of the bill, and more than made up for by the reduction in counterfeiting (counterfeiting decreases the effective value of currency). You want to talk wasteful, the U.S. one-cent coin costs 2.41 U.S. cents to manufacture. By making them at all, our country is throwing money away.
Relee
11 years, 8 months ago
Keep in mind Alfie that a penny only costs that much to mint because of inflation. It wasn't always a losing proposition, it's just that the value of the coin has gone down so much it's worth less than the cost of manufacture now. The same will happen to every coin eventually.
Alfador
11 years, 8 months ago
True. I should have specified: "by making them at all THESE DAYS" ;)
Relee
11 years, 8 months ago
I kind of wonder if one day they'll re-arrange the value of currency so that a dollar becomes a penny and the whole thing starts over again, or if the economy will finally fully-fail before that. ^.^;;

Would that be Miss Mab's? There was a big auction at the end of the con, and someone actually won a speaking guest role in her comic for a final bid of three thousand dollars.
Autumnringtail
11 years, 8 months ago
Yes and wow, the bidding went up to three thousand dollars? I knew she was popular but I had no idea she has that level of fame.
AlexReynard
11 years, 8 months ago
I think it mostly had to do with the bidder. i dunno how much stuff he bought overall, but it had to total more than $5.000. He made everyone's jaw drop.

> I saw Avenue Q,

The internet is for porn!

> I played Cards Against Humanity,

That game is epic win.  Did you ever get a chance to play the racism card?

> I ate at a charming little Chinese place called the OK Restaurant,

I've got you one-upped.  There is a restaurant near where I live called the Fukien Gourmet.  They are quick to say that it is pronounced, "Foo-Kim", not "Fucking".

> I got to see a two-year-old being enchanted by fursuiters,

I always love that part.

> I found out that Canadian $100 bills have freakin' plastic windows in them,

I like their $1 coins.  They're called "loonies".  If they make a $2 coin, will it be a "toonie"?

Sounds like your vacation was crazy, over the top, and excessively eventful.  That's my favorate kind!
nasthedarkone

as a matter of fact, yes, we do call our $2 coins 'toonies'....it just made sense to us...

Canada, you have unlocked achievement, "Awesome".
MrZero
11 years, 8 months ago
The loonies have a loon on the back, but the two'nies have a polar bear on the back. The quarters have a caribou/reindeer head, and there's a bunch of special event quarters with different stuff on them. The dimes have the Bluenose sailboat. The nickle has a beaver and I think there are old nickels with a rabbit. The penny has maple leafs. Almost all coins but old pennies have various versions of Queen Elizibeth on the front. And no coins have Susan B Anthony on them. :P

>The internet is for porn!

That song got the biggest laughs of the whole show. :)

>That game is epic win.  Did you ever get a chance to play the racism card?

Possibly? Don't remember. However, "When I dropped acid, my genitals turned into the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King jr."

>Epic win.

Actually, we got routed horribly in the second round. But we played our hearts out and the other tem was simply That Damn Amazing. None of us minded losing to them.

>I like their $1 coins.  They're called "loonies".  If they make a $2 coin, will it be a "toonie"?

Did you just correctly predict a nickname by accident? :D

>Sounds like your vacation was crazy, over the top, and excessively eventful.  That's my favorate kind!

Indeed! I doubt it could have gone better. ^__^
