Today was my last day of volunteering at the local humane society. I have been a volunteer for them for a few years now. I used to go there to volunteer once a week with my mother, but now schedules have changed and our visits became less frequent. At first we socialized the cats by handling them (best job ever). I also handled the small mammals (rabbits, Guinea pigs, other rodents, and the occasional ferret). As time went on, our efforts were needed to help in the feline isolation room (were the sick kitties go so diseases are not spread). We cleaned cages, changed litter boxes, and filled their bowls with food and water. When things were not busy, we helped with miscellaneous tasks.
The most current room we helped in was the spay and neuter clinic. We would help wake up the sedated animals after the operation and pull the air tube out of their throat once they did. Our job was to comfort and clean them up before putting them back in their cages.
My mother's schedule changed a bit, so we had to come later in the day. The animals were normally all back in their cages by this time, and the only thing left for us to do was clean up.
It's been a rewarding experience to volunteer at this place. Perhaps I will begin volunteering for another animal shelter in the future.
