Well, that was interesting! I came home and went to sit down at my chair in front of my PC, when something scurries out to my foot. I figure it was an escaped ferret. Nope! It was Vesper! He happily climbed onto my foot, and I scooped him up back to his cage. Heartwood was munching away happily on my potted plant. Corta had stayed home to man the rat-fort. They apparently got the door open somehow, and went out exploring. Dunno how Vesper got down safely, but they're safe and I don't see any signs of rat damage, so you got me for how long they had tasted freedom. They had the run of the house for a while.
