So I don't usually do movie review things or the like but given what I've been seeing online I think I need to with this movie.
So disclaimer out of the gate. I read reviews and most of the plot was spoiled for me before watching. I am sitting here after having watched the movie wondering if I saw the same movie that 90% of these reviewers or folks reacting to the movie watched.
It was fun, good and very enjoyable. The writing was solid, they stuck to their guns on characters and it shows, character arks feel complete, growth fits, no character has an heel turns or the like that feel weird. It all flows nicely and it's clear they wrote the full script and if anything got changed, went back and made sure it flowed rather than 'oh well that's clearly when something got leaked and had to be changed' or 'oh that's the bad reception to first glimpses so it got changed' things.
Also I know a lot has blown up with this movie's inclusion of a gay character and...... *face palm* Folks the relationship in movie isn't down played or thrown in your face. It's treated as a normal relationship in the movie with the exact fan flare it would've had if it had been straight and the same impact on the plot as if it had been straight. The movie isn't about romance or the like, and it treats it like most movies in the past treat relationships when they're NOT the focal point. It was incredibly refreshing to have some gay representation that is just treated as being NORMAL. Second, the 'kiss'.....if it existed I think I blinked and missed it. I don't know what people on the internet are talking about here as I heard about it, was actively watching for it and...nothing so no idea what folks are talking about. I saw a scene where I thought that's what was about to happen but instead a more realistic 'two people in a relationship' action happened instead and once again, refreshing.
TL:DR If you like sci-fi movies with action. Watch Lightyear. If you want a pure comedy or the old Rangers of Star Command cartoon, don't watch this as it will NOT be that. If you want memorable characters who interact well together and even background characters stick out, watch this. (Seriously there's this ground crew guy that we are given the name of but I'm terrible with names and he's a sweet guy with little actual screen time and he still sticks out to me in my mind, ALL the characters stick out in my mind even after getting home and having had a few hours to forget details.)
