My HD 5870 sounds like a jet engine .

by
For almost a year  it was working fine and runs quiet until one night when I got home from dinner it started to make this loud grinding noise . I'm not sure whats causing this , maybe dust or ash ? I clean it regularly with vacuum and compressed air . It's still works fine but the noise is so annoying . I'm scared to leave it when I'm away from work , it might cause house fire or something .

It's still under warranty and I'm going  have it RMA  in a few hours .
I'm hoping they replace it with 2gb Toxic edition or if I'm lucky a 5970 . :)

Right now I'm running my pc with a crappy low end vid card .

Thank you for your comments favs and watches I read all of them .
I just have a hard time answering them all back . .

Chances are good that the fan's just giving out, as the fans on video cards tend to be cheap and rather crappy. If it's accessible, a drop of light gear oil will clear the noise. If it's not accessible.. yeah, RMA.

I'm jealous! My 8800GTX really sucks now. I want to get a new PC sometime this year.

Mines an old radeon card thats been making grinding noises for a couple years, cant do anything about it, since oiling the fan didn't work for long.

Bearings could be wearing out.

its the fan, the only thing you can really do is replace the fan, or get a fan controler and lower its speed till the noise goes away, same happens to mine when i have the fan on full blast, but if i drop it just a few rpm, the noise goes away, of course it helps that ontop of that fan i also have 3 180 mm fans as well. I love custom builds.

Try upgrading your Catalyst drivers. Happened to my 5850, the fan control sometimes loses its threshold settings, and installing a new set can fix this. Use the advanced options to check the temps and fan speed too in case it is a fault.

I tried updating the drivers , worked for a while then noise became intermittent . I already returned it to the distrubutor , they told me I could get it back again next with a possible upgrade . :)

Yeah, RMA is the way to go then. See if you can get a 6950 or 6970 then. Provided the budget reaches that far. :D

Better hurry since these babies tend to overheat quickly if there's no proper cooling. Get a can of compressed air and blow all the dust out and think about taking it to service to change fan (you can even do it yourself, but onlly if you know what are you doing :) Good luck! i just bought 5870 2 Gb, can't wait to put it in my machine and give it a try :)

something else to check. sometimes dust can build up in a layer against the heatsync behind the intake fan. vacuume alone won't get it. you need canned air or an air compressor to get that out. make sure you don't let the fan spin if you do.
