A couple of days ago I was able to see the movie "My Little Pony: A new generation". As with "He-Man CGI", my expectations were also low, but this time there was no pleasant surprise.
The idea of a reboot sounded very appealing. FIM was a great series that was not only able to please its target audience, but also managed to become a worldwide phenomenon, but this could not last forever. After 10 years since its premiere, the franchise urgently needed to be renewed. It was the perfect opportunity to put everything learned into practice and create a new product that would at least try to repeat that first boom that FIM caused. And did they succeed? Uh... I'm not really sure.
Personally, I'd say it was a pretty mediocre movie, but with enough engaging elements to avoid being downright bad. Visually it is very pretty. The new equine designs are good and can be very expressive in extreme situations, just like in FIM. The humor maintains a FIM-like quality, with references and easter eggs everywhere. The characters are interesting and one can easily become fond of at least a couple of them. So what is the problem? Well, I find two: The story and the rhythm.
The film shows us a very different Equestria from the previous generation, with many elements that seem to refer to FIM, but at the same time establishing a new lore, which opens the debate as to whether this universe is the same as FIM or is it one brand new. Unfortunately the movie never makes this point clear, and it doesn't bother to explain its own lore any better. The film poses an initial problem, but never explains the origin of that problem. In fact, the movie explains almost nothing about this new Equestria and has even given me the feeling that this world is almost uninhabited.
The pacing of the film is another problem. It doesn't get boring, but it's kind of lazy in everything it does. The humor is good, but it could have been better and the emotional moments could be more emotional. Everything in this movie meets the quota to say OK, but fails to go beyond that. It's very stingy. I will not comment on musicals because that does not fit my requirements
Well, to finish. This new start may be well received by connoisseurs of the previous series, but personally, I doubt that it will be able to attract a new audience or cause a great impact on the internet, something that FIM achieved at the time and that left more than one surprised.
If you are a fan of FIM or at least someone who enjoyed that series in its best moments and want to try something new, you may be able to have a good time with this movie, although I recommend watching it with low expectations. I hope that in the future things will improve.
By the way, my favorite is Izzy Moonbow.
