EU is Removing Digital Privacy Laws

Last Friday, on July 6th, the EU voted in a measure called Chatcontrol. What it does is allow fully automated real time scanning of all emails and messages in search of "illegal content containing minors". What this means is that anyone in the EU or talking to anyone in the EU can have their messages scanned and read and potentially flagged. Not by people, but by AI.

The only silver lining is that it's VOLUNTARY right now, and according to the article I'm posting the vast majority of folks and businesses are against this. BUT they're going to be introducing another measure to make it mandatory. Hopefully that one will not pass. I'm linking the article I read below.

https://www.patrick-breyer.de/en/posts/message-screening/

There's not much we can do about this now, but this is a huge deal that everyone needs to know about. I urge you to look into the matter further if you reside in the EU, and spread this info as far as you can.

what does this mean for IB?

They most likely can't scan most https (and definitely can't scan all of it) and if you ever sent questionable material via unencrypted email then your life was always forfeit anyway.

Even in that scenario, drawings of fantasy creatures tend to be ignored by many jurisdictions.

We already scan uploads for exact matches to known actual child abuse imagery (photos and possibly psuedo-photos of RL children). This was a requirement of one of our hosts for user-generated content. The system acts automatically but has never triggered because people don't upload stuff like that here, as it'd be against half the rules in our content policy.

There is no automated scanning of PMs or other text content and the bodies of PMs and support tickets are encrypted in such a way that simply taking the disks or reading them from a database dump would not result in a readable copy. We do not offer a chat service and it is unlikely that we'd be interested in participating in such a scanning service. (However, we cannot cover what happens to copies of PMs forwarded by email to a recipient.)

Moreover, we are not legally based in the EU (though our main servers are), so it is not clear that the derogation applies to us.

I wonder how those authoritarian, corrupt politicians will find their painful end. Lets hope it is by the hands of those they suppressed and stole from for years, aka the citizens of Europe.

Well the public has power look up the downfall of AiDungeon. It was a story/dungeon ai driven writing website. Where you could interact with an ai to have it play DM. They eventually banned any kind of sex if ever a child was mentioned even in passing. Also the ai was trained on child porn, lol. It dropped from five stars to less then 1.5 in less than a week. Then they removed incest more recently and their next target is bestiality and the way they do it with keywords I guess they will ban furry. That's why I now enjoy fucking around with dreamily.ai atleast it doesn't have an ai reading what you type or do, much less creepy.

having things done by ai (like scanning chats and such) is the most stupid decision anybody could make, ai does not understand humor, sarcasm or anything humans use to communicate. One joke gone wrong and you could be raided by police, things will go downhill from then on thanks to our incompetent and/or malicious overlords, voted for by nobody but yet in power somehow.

Corruption in politics is too global. I thought the USA had the title for most corrupt but that just takes the cake.

By the time that happends however, it's too far along to simply be removed without a fight... =(

This sounds very similar to what Apple is planning to do now for their devices here in the states
Privacy is pretty much almost dead nowadays
Kellyn
2 years, 8 months ago
I know. I am frankly surprised how what apple is doing hasn't really been brought up by anyone I follow here. I just hope all these new privacy invasions that are apparently taking place across the world won't turn into them going after cub.

I have come to terms with the fact that my taste in porn is relatively disgusting. I just really don't want my friends and family to have to come to terms with that fact when I have done nothing and will do nothing to harm others because of my sexual interests.

Also both what apple is doing and what the EU is doing is to protect children. If we want to protect the children we should protect them from losing their privacy!

I just read about this Apple issue today. I can't BELIEVE they're going to willingly install a backdoor to their systems. I use an iPad for art right now, but Im going to have to invest in something else before that change happens.
Kellyn
2 years, 8 months ago
Alternatively you can just make sure automatic updates are disabled and never upgrade to iOS 15. No reason to throw out a perfectly good device over software you are not required to install. Just get something else when either the iPad breaks, performs too slowly, or the apps you use to draw no longer support iOS 14.

That said I agree with you. I am going to have to seriously consider whether or not I buy anything apple going forward.

As Youtube has proven countless times already this decade, AI is so sophisticated that you can basically let it run your entire operation and never see a single issue pop up.

Oh, wait...

Pffftttt! XD

So this will be an automated AI??? That's the easiest to fool! EVERYONE just have to start or end their conversation with a pedo-joke, and the police will get an EU worth of non-pedo material to go through! Still, it's an intrusion on the people's privacy, so...Freedom dies a little once more. T_T
Taleir
2 years, 8 months ago
Also, it will end up breaching the privacy of people outside their jurisdiction, as those emails and chats they scan will inevitably involve people outside of the EU.
Killereye
2 years, 8 months ago
Not to mention, this will maybe slow down the internet with it running in the backgrounds??? It could work silently, and only affect the capacity to a minimal degree, but if you have 100 horse, you don't pack 1 of it full with silly things like this AI! It running in the backgrounds just puts unwanted weights to the traffic, no matter if it's light or heavy!

Yeah, the idea behind it is noble, but how it's functioning is highly intrusive, and an AI is clearly not ready/UNFIT to take on this kind of operation! That is why we need to fight it, if it gets put on duty! Everyone just need to post the same pedo-joke and this will put an EU worth of work on the police's shoulder...They will learn, that if they mess with the wrong (but still innocent) people, we will fight back!

" ...but by AI.

That’s the WORST Part about it, there so much overestimate the Ai.
It will bring up a shit ton of false positive.
In chats even more than in pictures, the AI just doesn’t understand context.

Political officials are exempt from the measure...

But in all seriousness this leveraging of insert morally reprehensible content as a way to foothold earmarking of other data points needs to stop.

Might as well just interpret "Illegal content containing minors" as any picture of a minor. If you're really concerned that's the safest thing to do.
Taleir
2 years, 8 months ago
Political officials are exempt?  Why so?  If they're doing nothing wrong, they have nothing to hide.  ๐Ÿ˜

Don't want their own dirty secrets becoming public?
LemmyNiscuit
2 years, 8 months ago
To be clear I wasn't saying they are, that was a joke as laws (at least here in the US) sometimes include a clause about how members of congress are exempt from them.
Killereye
2 years, 8 months ago
Well if it would be so, it's obvious: They would claim, that they need to speak/tweet/and conference call about this AI's progress, and all the buzz words would be suspicious as well, so they would need an exempt from the investigatory AI's functions.

That or some other legal sounding BS would be the filed claim of exempt...I guess.

Yeah, but short of the bloodiest revolution history has ever seen, literally purging government of every last individual whose employed by them in even a minute capacity, all the way down to the janitorial staff, absolutely nothing is going to change this, stop this, or otherwise do anything to make the situation better. The government has no desire to stop, and the public has no appetite for doing anything that would actually require effort. It's a lose/lose situation because the people there are too beaten down to care anymore.
