Potential Carpal Tunnel

So I went and saw a doctor, I might have developed or in the developing stages of carpal tunnel, which means I need to rest my wrist indefinitely for a little bit just to see if the pain goes away or if it persists. If it goes away, no carpal...if it persists....you get the idea. So what Im going to try to do, is probably still stream, but do 1 sketch if so much, because while this may be terrible...I still need to eat and pay my bills, So i cant really afford to not stream or draw.

If you would like to donate to my ko-fi to help supplement my income in the downtime I would really appreciate any bit of help I get. Thanks alot for understanding and continuing to support your favourite little bat after all these years. Ill be sure to do lots of Gabz butts in celebration <3

I know why you'd want to eat your bills but food is much better for you!

Maybe you can ask around for tips on how to help prevent it? I know some artists use a brace to help prevent wrist injury.

I know all the tips to prevent it but even following all those and doing my stretches everyday...it still sorta happened. So i gotta seek other advice now.

When I had tendinitis and carpal tunnel flare ups in my dominant hand/wrist I did do some sketch commissions with my non-dominant hand (for cheap ofc since they weren't nearly up to my usual quality) while I tried to learn to use it and get it up to speed.

That's harsh, and I hope there's a better solution. I know you need to bring in income, but straining your wrist when you know there's something wrong with it seems like a temporary solution at best.

I hope it doesn't get worse for you, Domz.  x.x

I really hope no, but if yes, try to analyze if your wrist is in correct position when drawing, I had it too and I solve it fixing my position at drawing time, good luck friend

Its mostly my non-drawing hand which is whats confusing to me. But I cant use the keyboard or hold anything with my left hand. :(

As someone with carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel, and arthritis... you have my sympathies.

Hey there, I got CPS this year as well and found a few things that have helped me...

I set up my tablet as if it was a canvass on an easel, basically placing it upright at an almost 90 degree angle rather than drawing flat on your lap, and it has helped tremendously. You're taking pressure off your wrists and using your arms and shoulders to move the pen around.

Also I got these wrist braces to wear all day, even when I sleep: https://www.amazon.com/Night-Wrist-Sleep-Support-Brace

They help a LOT, especially they prevent you from curling your wrists in while you sleep.

When I use my tablet pen I also tried a few different ways to shove the pen into the braces so I don't have to hold the pen with my fingers, which is awkward at first and you have to go slow, but it works.

I also got a special designed pillow to sit my phone upright on. I've had to cut back texting and typing by 90%. https://www.amazon.com/Flippy-Compact-Multi-Angle-eReaders-Smartphones

Try not to hold your cel phone in your hand and text. If you can put it on a counter or something else, it helps a LOT.

Also limit typing on a keyboard, but if you have to, make sure your elbows are elevated and level to your forearms, and your palms do not rest on the keyboard. Your fingers have to dangle below. It's awkward, but this will save your wrists in the long run and improve your posture. It's wierd, but keep at it.

There are also these thumb braces I just got and they work fantastically: https://www.amazon.com/Futuro-Deluxe-Stabilizer

Make sure you get the size right for you on all these braces.

Also I've discovered stretches that help me out, but honestly stretching will help you TONS.

One of the most helpful stretches is one that I came up with:
1) Keeping your arms straight, do not bend at your elbows, hold both hands outstretched in front of you, and rotate your open palms upwards so that you're doing a "stop" pose.

2) Slowly rotate at your wrists and forearms outwards as comfortably far as you can, fingers outstretched..
Left hand rotates at the wrist counter-clockwise, from 12 o'clock to 9 o'clock.
Right hand rotates at the wrist clockwise, from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock.

3) Then rotate both hands back inwards as far as you can, keeping your hands open and fingers outstretched.
Left hand rotates from 9 to 3 o'clock.
Right hand rotates from 9 to 9 o'clock.
(Essentially as if you're an anime character fondling huge boobies.)

Do that slowly several times.

1) Then, arms still outstretched, elbows straight, fold your hands downward at the wrists so that your palms are facing you, like you were a mummy or a zombie.
Your fingers are pointed downwards, and the top of your hands are facing away from you.
Basically they are in the opposite position as before.

2) Then rotate both hands towards each other.
Left hand rotates counter-clockwise from 6 to 3.
Right hand rotates clockwise from 6 to 9.

3) Then rotate so both are back to 6 o'clock.
Do that several times slowly.

If these steps don't make sense, let me know and I'll be happy to take photos and send you links.

CPS has been crippling for me, especially during the quarantine. Not being able to text or be social or draw has been soul crushing. I'd hate to have you go thru the same thing.

The anime boobies killed me xD. But yeah ive been following some steps, its not confirmed CPS as yet, because I dont have alot of the other symptoms for it, but the majority are there ;_;. Ive been resting it alot and not using it as much as I can. My plan for the next week or so is just bingewatching everything I have on my list and not lifting a finger to do anything until it eases up. Ive got some braces already but I need to get some left handed ones...normally my right wrist dies first from drawing/gaming extensively, but this time its both wrists, but primarily my left which has seriously handicapped everything I do on a daily basis. But thanks for the advice bud. Ill look into those other options~

So I ended up editing and re-editing and re-editing my reply to make sure it read easily. Just in case, if you're interested, give it another glance.

Things first started out for me where it was just in my right wrist, so I did everything left handed, then that put too much pressure on my left hand so I did everything right handed, then it just stayed in both.

Be cautious with twisting motions like opening a bottle or a door knob. If you can get help with those things. It's embarassing, but seriously you don't want this to go full blown. I even did bingewatching for a few weeks. Don't let your wrists fool you to thinking "it's not so bad now" and go back to things as normal. =S

I absolutely wish you all the best!

Oh! Also don't rest on your elbows, especially if you're typing at a chair.

If it's any stuff that can be helped with talking, I'm a licensed therapist in my state and happily offer an open ear without any desire of compensation. Shoot me a note if you ever wanna chat.
