25 years of Pokemon

by
It's hard to believe that it's been 25 years since Pokemon first came to North America, it also may be hard for some of you to believe that Pokemon Sword is the first game in the franchise that I've completed (I played a little bit of Blue a long, loooong time ago, but it wasn't a whole lot).

Anyway, to fill in a little time before the next story is released, I thought I'd go over what my favorite pokemon are of every type.  This isn't necessarily based on usefulness in the games (though it may help in some cases), but rather which pokemon I like personally.  So, let's get started...

Normal Type: Eevee
Reason: Was there any doubt that Eevee would be my choice here?  You've seen the pix of me in my Eevee form and Hope before, why wouldn't I put it here?  Also, Eevee is so damned cute, it's hard not to put it in this slot.
Honorable Mentions: Buneary/Lopunny, Wooloo

Fire Type: Vulpix (+ Ninetales)
Reason: This should be another no-brainer, considering that Charlene had a vulpix form (now a Ninetales form).  Additionally, when I saw Vulpix for the first time in the anime, it was "love at first sight" for me.
Honorable Mentions: Charmander Line, Growlithe/Arcanine, Ponyta/Rapidash, Flareon, Fennekin Line, Scorbunny Line, Victini

Fighting Type: Lucario
Reason: Considering its description of being loyal to its trainer, its appearance, and its sense of justice, I figure that Lucario would be my top choice here.  It also helps that I "LOL" when Lucario and Cinderace argue with each other. >=3
Honorable Mentions: Meloetta (Pirouette Form), Mankey/Primeape, Machamp (particularly Gigantamax Machamp), Galarian SirFetch'd, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Mienshao, Grapploct, Zamazenta, Mega Lopunny, Gallade

Water Type: Squirtle (and its evolutions)
Reason: This one is considerably harder than the last three, since it was a close race between Squirtle, Primarina, and Vaporeon.  However, Squirtle edged them out because of the Squirtle Squad in the anime and because it would be my choice of starter in Gen 1.  Although, when it comes to attractiveness, Primarina and Vaporeon are definitely ahead of Squirtle. ;3
Honorable Mentions: Primarina, Vaporeon, Psyduck (but more for comedy relief than anything else), Seel/Dewgong, Gyarados, Milotic, Buizel/Floatzel, Inteleon, Marill/Azumarill.

Flying Type: Corviknight
Reason: I think Corviknight out of all the bird pokemon looks the coolest (especially Gigantamaxed), plus I found Corviknight to be quite useful when I was playing through Sword.  Although, I have to admit I was tempted to put Shaymin or Dragonite here instead.
Honorable Mentions: Charizard, Butterfree, Pidgeot, Scyther, Pinsir, Gyarados, The Legendary Birds (except for Galarian Zapdos), Dragonite, Lugia, Ho-oh, Togekiss, Shaymin (sky form), Emolga.

Grass Type: Cherrim (Sunshine form)
Reason: This was a tough one between Cherrim's Sunshine form and Whimsicott, but I ultimately thought Cherrim's sunshine form had a cuter appearance, so I went with it.  The reason why I like Cherrim (and for that matter, Whimsicott) so much is because they both remind me of a certain race of characters that I happen to like quite a lot.
Honorable Mentions: Whimsicott, Bulbasaur Line, Bellossom, Leafeon, Shaymin, Snivy Line, Steenee, Rillaboom, Gossifleur/Eldegoss, Roselia, Decidueye, Deerling.

Poison Type: Bulbasaur (and its evolutions)
Reason: While Bulbasaur didn't make it as my favorite grass type, it does make it here.  In fact, up until recently, I didn't even know Bulbasaur was part poison-type.  Again, much like Squirtle, nostalgia plays a huge role in Bulbasaur getting the nod here (well, that plus there aren't that many poison types that I would consider "cute").  There are others that I would consider to be "cool" (I.E.: Toxtricity), but I still have to give it to Bulbasaur because of nostalgia (and its usefulness in the early game of Gen 1).
Honorable Mentions: Toxtricity (especially amped form), Ekans/Arbok, Nidoran (female) line, Nidoran (male), Koffing/Weezing, Poipole, Eternatus (especially Eternamaxed), Beedrill, Venomoth, Gastly Line, Roselia and Roserade.

Electric Type: Pikachu (+ Pichu and Raichu...also includes Alolan Raichu)
Reason: It's fucking Pikachu!  Do I even NEED a reason?
Honorable Mentions: Jolteon, Electabuzz, Mareep Line, Plusle/Minun, Shinx Line, Pachirisu, Yamper/Boltund, Regeleki, Zapdos, Emolga, Dedenne, Toxtricity, Morpeko, Vikavolt.

Ground Type: Flygon
Reason: It's a close call between Flygon and Excadrill here, considering how much they've helped me deal with those naughty electric types in the raid dens.  However, Flygon has the cooler design, so I'm going with it.
Honorable Mentions: Excadrill, Sandshrew/Sandslash, Diglett/Dugtrio, Nidoqueen (another surprise dual-typing that I was unaware of), Onix/Steelix, Garchomp.

Psychic Type: Sapphire! XD
Reason: She's my wife, she'd probably be mad at me if I didn't put hir here! X3
OK, I guess that's a bit of a cop-out.  (I still love you, sweetheart <3 )  So, let's do it for real...

Psychic Type (for real this time): Mew
Reason: In all honesty, I like Mewtwo.  I think it looks cool and seems pretty bad ass.  However, I find Mew a lot cuter and you know how much I like things that are "cute".  Also, Espeon and Meloetta are serious contenders here.
Honorable Mentions: Mewtwo, Espeon, Meloetta (Aria form), Gallade, Gardevoir, Galarian Ponyta/Rapidash, Hatenna Line, Galarian Articuno, Celebi, Victini, Delphox, Alolan Raichu, Jirachi, Orbeetle (especially Gigantamaxed).

Rock Type: Lycanroc
Reason: A wolf pokemon (pre-Zacian and Zamazenta), yes please!
Honorable Mentions: Onix, Amaura/Aurorus, Diancie, Coalossal, Drednaw.

Ice Type: Alolan Vulpix (+ Ninetales)
Reason: See Fire Type winner for reason...although it was difficult not choosing Glaceon here.
Honorable Mentions: Glaceon, Articuno, Eiscue, Snom/Frosmoth, Dewgong, Lapras, Amaura/Aurorus.

Bug Type: Scyther (+ Scizor)
Reason: From the moment I saw Scyther in the anime, it seemed pretty bad ass, and it has stuck with me for over 20 years.
Honorable Mentions: Pinsir, Beedrill, Butterfree, Vikavolt, Heracross, Ribombee, Orbeetle (especially Gigantamaxed), Centiskorch, Snom/Frosmoth.

Dragon Type: Dratini (and its evolutions)
Reason: I always liked how Dragonair looked, and Dratini seemed rather cute as well.  Dragonite is not as cute as its previous evolutions, but I liked it because of its description and personality (it makes me think of something like Pete's Dragon or Magellan from Eureeka's Castle).
Honorable Mentions: Drampa (AKA: I can't believe it's not Falkor), Latios/Latias, Garchomp, Dragapult, Flygon, Eternatus (especially Eternamaxed).
Pokemon that aren't dragons, but probably should be: Charizard, Gyarados.
This is a fucking Dragon?!!: Altaria, Alolan Exeggutor, Guzzlord

Ghost Type: Gastly (and its evolutions)
Reason: I almost chose Dragapult because of how much use I've gotten out of it in Sword, but (like Squirtle and Bulbasaur earlier) nostalgia plays a major role here.  It also helps that Gengar is supposed to be like the doppelganger of Clefable.
Honorable Mentions: Dragapult, Rotom, Mimikyu
Pokemon that Dr. Wily would love: Duskull

Dark Type: Umbreon
Reason: This was probably the hardest decision thus far, choosing between Umbreon and Zorua/Zoroark.  However, I chose Umbreon because of it being an eevolution, its shiny form, the way its rings glow, and (of course) Luna from "Man of The House"/"Golden Boy" as well as Charlene's Umbreon form.
Honorable Mentions: Zorua/Zoroark, Nickit, Galarian Moltres, Houndoom, Grimmsnarl, Obstagoon, Greninja, Pangoro, Incineroar, Morpeko.
Misunderstood Pokemon: Absol
Why isn't this part water-type?: Inkay/Malamar

Steel Type: Zacian
Reason: I was tempted to make this a tie between Zacian and Zamazenta.  However, since Zacian is the only one of them I have at the moment and because of how helpful it is in Max Raids (I.E.: Behemoth Blade), I have to give it to Zacian.  Plus, I think Zacian has the better design of the two anyway.
Honorable Mentions: Zamazenta, Lucario, Corviknight, Perrserker, Steelix, Jirachi, Duraludon, Scizor.
This is a steel type because hair...?: Alolan Diglett/Alolan Dugtrio
WTF Game Freak?!!: Klefki

Fairy Type: Sylveon
Reason: Seriously, if it took you more than 2 seconds to realize that Sylveon was going to be my top choice as Fairy type, you don't know me very well! X3
Honorable Mentions: Clefairy/Clefable, Whimisicott, Togepi Line (especially Togekiss), Flabebe and Floette, Gardevoir, Xerneas, Alcremie, Zacian, Alolan Ninetales, Primarina, Galarian Rapidash, Marill/Azumarill, Dedenne, Diancie, Ribombee, Tapu Lele, Hatterene, Grimmsnarl.

NOTE: These are my personal opinions based on how I feel.  You're free to disagree with me if you wish, just don't be an ass about it in the comments.  Additionally, there are some pokemon for certain types that I did not list because I am unfamiliar with them at this time.  This list is subject to revision if I deem it necessary.

Anyway, that's all I have for now.  I'm hoping to have a new story to post here ready by the end of this week.

fairy type was the beginning of the end for the game series imo. black and white 2 was the climax for Pokémon games, adding useful features that helped the game become easier, but also keeping the challenge of the previous games. x and y left out some of these features, replaced with a less pixels and a 3d feature that would be discontinued in future versions. then came omega ruby and alpha sapphire, and didn't offer anything too interesting other then the ability to fly around the map on either latias or latios. then there came the downfall: sun and moon. don't get me wrong, sun and moon added alot of interesting features, but they also removed many, such as latias/latios flight, mega evolution and ability to trade with past game iterations.

but they also left out the most important feature: challenge.
up until sun and moon, the game still had a decent amount of challenge, requiring skill and strategic thought in order to defeat bosses, but now its so easy that you won't even need the Pokémon center to complete 80% of the game.

Mega Evolution is still in Sun/Moon, and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon. Sword/Shield removed it.

I stopped after completing sun and moon, but I didn't see any mega evolutions. You may just be referring to ultra sun and moon.

Mega Evolution isn't available till you complete the main story, but it's still in Sun and Moon. You get a keystone and the stone for Alakazam from Dexio at Ancient Poni Path. Most of the stones are available at the Battle Tree shop, and there were serial codes to get the rest. Most of them were either serial code or Battle Tree Shop. If you defeated Red at The Battle Tree, you get the stones for Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise. The orbs for Kyogre and Groudon could be bought at Hau'oli City.

https://www.serebii.net/sunmoon/megaevolutions.shtml For more info, but they are in Sun and Moon. For Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, all the stones are available to buy at the Battle Tree Shop, except the stone for Diancie, which you get at Konikoni city if you have Diancie with you. The stones for Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise still come from Red if you beat him. You get the Keystone at Poni Plains this time, in addition to the stone for Alakazam. The Red Orb and Blue Orb are at Hau'oli City again. Again, I think you need to complete the main story in order to use Mega Evolution.

I'm not gonna lie, Sword was pretty easy.  I still enjoyed playing the game, but it didn't seem like a whole lot of challenge.  Though I did have some knowledge about type advantages before playing the game to help me out.

It's all just my opinion and what I've observed, if you enjoy those games, then that's all that matters in the end

I'm still trying to complete the dex in that game.  I have 20 more pokemon left to find, almost all of them are Shield-exclusives.

*Snorts at the Psychic type mention* Hehe... well, I wouldn't be mad... but it does amuse me that you put that there. Hehe. (I love you, too, honey. <3)

You have the same Bug and Ground type favorites that I do. Some of your honorable mentions are my favorites for that type.

Yeah, the Bulbasaur line are also Poison types. They were the first starter to start with two types. Back in gen 1, the only pure Grass type was Tangela. The others were either Grass/Poison, Grass/Bug (Paras/Parasect), or Grass/Psychic (Exeggcute/Exeggutor). Also, Mega Charizard X is a dragon. It's Fire/Dragon, so Charizard is, in a way, a dragon.

It is hard to believe it's been 25 years. I got into it when it came out, and have done a lot of games.

My favorites for each type (Not going to list all the ones I like as I like a lot):

Normal: Sawsbuck (Honorable mentions: Pyroar, Braviary) (Others I like: Galarian Zigzagoon line, Eevee, Alolan Rattata/Alolan Raticate, Zangoose)
Fire: Charizard (Honorable mentions: Pyroar, Cyndaquil line, Fennekin line, both Mega Charizard, Salazzle) (Others I like: Litleo, Alolan Marowark, Litten Line, Salandit, Vulpix/Ninetales, Flareon, Moltres, Houndoom, Mega Houndoom, Ho-Oh, Entei, Primal Groudon)
Fighting: Kommo-o (Honorable mentions: Lucario (Previous favorite), Mega Mewtwo X) (Others I like: Mega Lucario, Galarian Zapdos)

I was just having a little fun with this, that's all. ;3

Anyway, I did know about Mega Charizard, but I was talking about regular Charizard.

Hehe. I still like it.

Yeah. I know. That's why I said in a way.

Forgot an honorable mention for Electric! Zebstrika. Also missed one for Psychic under those I like. Mew. I hit the limit on doing that and had to adjust it so everything fit there, and ended up missing two. Zebstrika was interchangeable with Luxray for favorite electric before Zeraora, and Mew is one I like enough to add there.
