streaming on saturdays. also i quit my job

hello everyone!

i've been streaming saturdays at 10:00 a.m EST (1400 GMT) at Picarto if you want to watch me draw! these streams go pretty long, usually around 8 hours, so feel free to pop in late. the InkBunny stream notice will disappear eventually but i am still going

i am also drawing every day on a big secret new art project. i wonder if anybody remembers what it is! well, look forward to something fun in about 2 or 3 months.

how did i find the time? don't worry, i did not quit developing my cool new game! but i DID quit my cushy programming job. that was probably a terrible idea! what will i do for money? i don't know. i don't need money right now. ...but, i will probably need money eventually. life is hard without money

you might ask...

* what about patreon? this is a good idea, patreon seems cool! but, i started drawing back in 2000 when the furry community was just friends drawing for friends for fun. in my heart, i still think of my fans and my community as just a bunch of pals hanging out. charging money for art sort of transforms your community or your fanbase into your business. ...it's not a bad thing but it's a different thing.
* what about commissions? this is a good idea, i've done a lot of commissions! and a few people have asked me about them lately. currently, i'm too slow and too out of practice so i don't want to charge people money. i'm learning Clip Studio Paint which slows me down a lot. there are things SAI can do that CSP can not do. i'm also having trouble getting my lines and colors to look how i want them to look in the new tool. but i'm working hard and i should be at a better place in a few months!
* what about donations? this is a good idea, i already have a donation link tucked away somewhere! ...but, i did not post this journal to guilt people into clicking it so i will keep it a secret! ...i am grateful to everyone who's donated, you are all so nice.
* what about a new programming job? this is a good idea, but you weren't going to ask this, you liar!!! but okay. i'll probably find a new programming job some day. you're right.

i don't really want to do any of these things right now!! but, they are all good ideas. for now, i am just enjoying the time off! see you on saturday~

Your new game looks super rad, I hope it gets popular! It has a really creative twist to an already well-established genre, it's really neat.

If you're ever looking at money later down the line and considering your options, interactive smut in some fashion will never not be eye-catching...I don't think I have to tell you how popular monster mind was. I still go back to it sometimes myself 👀 The sheer depth that went into it was phenomenal.

I wish you the best of luck with Turbo Fat, looking forward to its full release!!

thank you, that's so great to hear!!! i think Turbo Fat's innovations over other games in the genre give it a really unique feel. there's a high skill cap and it can be played VERY quickly and efficiently with practice, but it's hard to get there. i hope people find the climb to be fun. i want to distract them along the way so it doesn't feel like work!

i'd love to make an interactive smut game! i think the hard part is -- i don't know if people will pay for smut, and i don't know if people are interested in a game with unlicensed characters. a lot of things went into making Monster Mind a success -- you could play it in your browser, for free, it had Pokemon, and it was hosted on a cool furry site where i already had a fanbase. people could download it, and share it on image boards.

i think if i try to sell a game, it will be received very differently than Monster Mind was. i don't think it has any chance to go viral or develop a massive following. maybe that's too pessimistic! but, it's how i see it

Mm, I totally get those reservations! Should you want to do more Pokémon then Patreon would definitely kick you off there for copyright, but there are other options! I understand though, there are a lot of factors that went into MM's success, no doubt in part to what you describe as well as just a hole in the market for that kid of content-- a man can dream though! If you ever consider it I'll defeinitely throw money at you to see something made out of it. :>

oh thanks! if i do make a game like that, i'll most likely approach it as a passion project with monetization as an afterthought. but, it'll be nice to have support <3

If you please, why would Our Host quit a "cushy" job?

Aren't those hard to find right now?

not in the Washington DC area, they're never short of computer type jobs!

but, my company lost a lot of big software projects. they kept paying my salary out of pocket, but there wasn't any work for me to do. i stayed on for a year or so, but finally just felt like i should make better use of my time.

I wish I could code games like you, I've been fishing around with this really cool game idea for a long time now and I've been trying to push myself to actually hook my heels into it and get it going. I even have a Discord with a few members ready to do other things I cannot do like the extra writing and potentially art and its just like aaaaa where's my motivation?!

Good luck with everything man! Your new game looks really cool - its really neat that you keep embracing the puzzle category! I have to imagine that coming up with new ways to present puzzles is a lot harder than just trying to make some FPS in certain ways - and it looks hecking charming!

What engine is that in anyway?~ I would assume most things are Unity, though I suppose GameMaker is also super nice for certain 2D stuff~

thanks, i consider myself very lucky that although i'm not a great coder, and i'm not a great artist -- the fact that i can do both makes an entry into solo game development a lot less intimidating than it is for others

my two favorite kinds of games are rhythm games and puzzle games! but, i also love arcade games if they're done right. more or less, i like games with very simple rules where you understand the rules in 2 minutes but can spend hours and hours improving.

this game is in the Godot engine! it is a lot like Unity. it is less mature and does not have as many features. but, it is open source which carries a lot of benefits -- you can sell your game freely, there are no restrictions on how much money you make or how you distribute it, and you do not have to worry about losing all of your work if the company decides to do something selfish and unthinkable.

That's funny~ I was going to guess Godot! I was thinking about using it myself, though I am kind of used to Unity? But I haven't actually started anything significant yet, though I did want to use YarnSpinner for my project idea.

I wish I could consult you on some things! But I'm sure you're extremely busy. I have this really fun idea for a game that's a unique spin on the Visual Novel genre. I just really need to get my head down and going on it; just my current programming job is a lot and I'm also trying to get another one of those too. You're so brave taking on the world with your vision! I have to suck the teet of corporate life for a lot longer because my student loan debt is too strong... (and my rent too x.x)

I also think you've carved out a really awesome style for your art honestly. Its so iconic! And it works for these games because its simple and cute, but has a ton of personality! I wish you all the luck in the world.

yeah, unity seems great! it's popular with a lot of indie studios for a reason, i wouldn't switch away from unity without a good reason. i have a few good reasons but i don't think those reasons apply to everyone!

yeah, as far as corporate teats, i'll probably go back to sucking teats in a few years myself! i don't anticipate this being a permanent change, as much as i'd like it to be. it intuitively feels unsustainable in the long term, unless something weird and magical happens!

Hey, you never know! I mean, there's a fair share of those success stories from grassroot gaming attempts; CaveStory (pre Nicalis :<), Undertale, etc.

I just need to find my inspiration and motivation; I also get a little worried because my game idea involves the P franchise too.... So that's always a little nervous as well.

I wish you all the luck in the world. You're one of my favorite content creators~

Wow that game looks really good so far, I like the extra spin on tetris but the cutesy creatures are what is getting me.

hey that's great!! i'm honestly really glad to hear that opinion because i'm worried about many people saying the opposite, "well, the characters are sort of ugly but i love the spin on tetris!!" the fact that there are people on both sides of it make me feel like i didn't waste time making both halves of the game :)

I also quit my job to make games because programming jobs are boring!

I’m sorry, I saw “quit my job” in the title, and all that was in my head was, “You did WHAT!?!?!?”

As someone who also brews code for business applications for a living and took gamedev classes during colleges and sorta "knows" what's all involved for creating a game, I take my mortarboard off with a bow for your courage to step in one of the most challenging markets of software products. From one side I envy you, from the other side I feel content with my stable situation.

Since you've already created a couple of games and you're popular and "known", I think and hope you'll succeed ||=(:3

oh it's a crazy big amount of work! and i think you'd have to be similarly crazy to expect to make money or even break even

i've spent a considerable amount of money on the soundtrack but i consider it just a sunk cost to make a cool game

i hope people play it! i might put it on Steam or something but i don't anticipate it being a financial success! i just hope people like playing it <3
