Post-Holiday PC Mayhem

So, for the longest time I have been working from laptops. This worked until swapping an HDD with an SSD in my gaming laptop caused some kind of wire between the display and motherboard to get loose and I have not been able to properly located it. I was forced to put any project on pause while I got a monitor and mirroed the laptop's desktop where I also got a programming job a few months after. It will works fine but there is no side power button which makes turning off and on the laptop a task. Than, shortly after the holidays I was given a motherboard by a freind so I could put together a new desktop and later an 2013 iMac (pre-Retina) from a family member. The iMac puts things on pause again.

The reason I got the iMac was because my family member had changing computing habits similar to me and that it was starting to degrade in performance. I had been begging her to give me it if she ever got a new computer. When I got it, it turns out the reason it began to degrade was due to the HDD but I didn't know how bad it had gotten because it lacked S.M.A.R.T. support (which is really dumb). Figured it'd be easier to wait until all the proper tools and try to slow it down as much as possible. It seemed to be working when I switched to Apple's new filesystem, APFS. But then it suddenly began to lock up more freqently and crash with early warnings showing in Origin's attempt to finish verifying certain Sims 3 EP installs throughout last month, despite APFS providing some performance gain.

After some minor trial and error, the iMac has a new SSD and runs as it were brand new again. I was able to extend it to my second display with a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cord, finally giving me more room to work with. I am also thinking about putting macOS Big Sur on it. According to hackers, Big Sur works without any post-installation mods on the 2013 model. It only has a problem with fusion drive models, which they suspect is why it probably wasn't eligible.

We'll see where things go from here!
