It is rather depressing...what we really need is another space race.
Id love to at least see us put mining colonies on the moon within my lifetime

We don't need to mine- We need to learn how to recycle our trash heaps and landfills- Everything we need to mine is there.

But we need to get out there, make new homes, and dare to dream once more.

Im all for recycleing our trash heaps and landfills...but mining colonies on the moon would be the first step in the colonization of space.

Kudos for sharing a journal like this. I think I posted those vids on G+ or something in the past as well. I hope something happens because the way things seem to be going here we may -need- to leave this planet some day. c.c;

Back when I was active on FA, I posted a journal similar in context-- Most think NASA has this massive budget, but in truth, it's pitiful-- The last figure I remember for NASA's annual budget was for the 2009-2010 budget year, and that was for a mere $700 million-- Less than the cost of a single fighter jet! :P Since a single year's federal budget is in the trillions, this is a mere pitance. But what does NASA do for you? You're on it right now: your computer is the result of the need to miniaturise a large warehouse's worth of computer down to the size of box of playing cards (OK, just a little larger, but not by much!) to control a manned landing on the moon...with the effective comouting power of a pocket calculator. :) It's also NASA who gave us solar cells that power our homes more affordably (and less waste) and Teflon, which once shielded space capsules, now coat our frying pans. :)

And we routinely elect people to crap on NASA every year at budget time.... :P

Now we just need to get more people in america to listen and comprehend this.

However, this could possibly have some benefits by getting the private sector to step up to the plate, as it has with the recent space launch to the ISS.  Instead of spinning ridiculous conspiracy theories about government cover-ups with NASA, nutcases will then be able to spin ridiculous conspiracy theories of 1%ers colluding with aliens on Mars. :p
