Considering Patreon or Equivalent

Yes, really.

I was originally looking at Ko-Fi, since I didn't think I'd be able to produce enough content for the likes of Patreon or Subscribestar, but in their terms and conditions I discovered they don't permit connection to what they term 'pornography, nudity, and other such obscene content'.  That's both harsh - nudity, obscene?  Really? - and seems to preclude my use of it, given the themes of my work.  Buy Me A Coffee proved to be the same, albeit using the word 'adult' instead of obscene.

Mulling it over today, I realised I might actually be able to produce a half-decent amount of content, so started looking more seriously at Patreon and Subscribestar.  The latter went out of contention when I noted an account would be suspended after 30 days of inactivity, which is too much pressure for someone like me, who is highly unlikely to produce enough content quickly enough.  That leaves the former, and there we have a notoriously censorious approach to worry about.

To be absolutely clear, should this actually happen: I will be paywalling nothing.  All fanfiction, and all original work that isn't intended for publication via Lulu (or elsewhere, if Lulu continue annoying me and I can find a viable alternative), and any variations of them will be freely available.  The content would be: early access, maybe by a couple of weeks; works-in-progress; behind-the-scenes materials such as character biographies, explanations and explorations of lore, history, cultures and organisations/groups, and reference doodles; and maybe a Telegram group.  Most of the background material would, inevitably, relate to Moonglade, as that's far and away my most involved project.

A big question, of course, is would people actually be interested?  One reason for this journal is to try and find out.  Another is to ask for any advice or information anyone could give me, especially on alternatives to Patreon should it prove unviable or otherwise not work out.  Responses gratefully received.

I mean I really do want artists to be able to make money drawing what they like to draw, but Patreon's morality policing aside, the way paywallers tend to treat fans who don't pay up, it's pretty fucked up the shit fans have to deal with just for not wanting to pay for walled off content, being shamed and accused of being "entitled" for the tiniest criticism or questions. As divisive as the fandom already is, the real shame is in creating more of it over who's paying and who can't or doesn't want to. For my part, I at least tried to understand it instead of immediately throwing out judgement, but the vast majority of them would rather block me than talk because I'm in that "can't pay" class and have the gall to... omg.. SPEAK to them like a real person or just ask questions about their policy without paying them first! *gasp*

I tell you, I'm leaning more and more on the side of leakers as this shit gets worse.

Oh, I agree on this.  Even wrote a journal on FA going deep into my thoughts.  As to 'entitled', well...recently, an artist I used to follow on DA was pondering a Patreon, and throughout clearly stated they wouldn't be paywalling anything.  When their Patreon is up and running, suddenly they are, nude versions of pieces, becuase apparently "that's what people wanted".  I'd venture to say those people are the truly entitled ones, working to ensure only they, who can pay, have access to certain work, while others who can't, like you and me, don't.

A good journal. I wouldn't have gone so far to call it exploitative before (it totally is), though mainly because of the whole passing judgement thing I didn't want to do, and trying my best to be open to the possibility that I could be wrong, but then I was treated as if I were trying to bankrupt them and cackle about getting all their art for free while they starved to death. I mean I've bought paywalled art before, but only stopped when I got the art and realized how terrible an investment it is, even if I never got to see it otherwise. I buy commissions as often as I have the funds for it, I've bought HD versions of art (even though it wasn't terribly smaller a resolution on the free version) I've voiced support for YCH auctions to friends who've disagreed with me, and the only reason I didn't create a Patreon account to support the artists I love (the ones who don't wall off their content, nevermind all the ones who do) is because if I start down THAT road, I know that pretty soon I'll be broke, because even though "IT'S JUST $1 DX" there are just SO MANY of them (and many more that aren't just a dollar) there are... just... so... many... (and just how many of those paywallers, should I have gone down that road and spend too much money on them, the same ones claiming they gotta eat, wouldn't have turned right around and said "I'm not responsible for your personal choices" should I be the one not eating while they've got all my money?)
