I'm no longer on Twitter.

It's more than just a bad website- it's a machine that makes people hate themselves and each other. What I originally took as a mere radicalization effect turned out to be a coal furnace in which there must be a new sacrifice every day, details be damned.

Even if, holistically, my participation doesn't matter much, I still can't personally support that thing anymore. It's a wretched trap that ruins people. If you want to follow me, I'll be here. If we get along, ask me for my Discord.

Atomization was the past of the internet and it'll be the future.

I wish more people shared your thoughts on the subject. It's become such an unhealthy place on a terrifyingly larger scale than most people realize, or would like to admit. I don't blame you for cutting ties, and I hope more furs follow suit soon.

I still to post my art there and nothing else and still I'm also thinking about just stopping and focus on some other places more art related.

Twitter's become this hellscape where its less social media and more "Who's turn is it on the noose?".

I understand what you mean. You feel like you have to pick your words very carefully or not say anything at all without 50 random people you've never met trying to "clown" you over something, be it right or wrong. Worst is how the damn site is being weaponized against people who did nothing wrong. And when I mean wrong, I mean people who did/made porn that's considered by some to be wrong think.

Smaller sites and personal discords are better in my opinon.

Glad to see you cut the site and I hope you're in a more positive place now

Its sad when a website that could do a lot of good is used by people with bad motives and even creates unneeded hostility with people that do not deserve it, while the people that do get away with being awful people. Honestly twitter is a negative space on a lot of areas, not just in the people there but also in the way more often then not whatever is trending on that site is usually awful news that just paints the world as this hellhole that we as normal people can't do anything about it. The place is too stressful for my liking.

Yeah... It's filled with extremely angry and mean people that can't help themselves because Twitter bombards them with cherry-picked stories and outrage-porn on a daily basis to keep you "engaged". I think it made me an absolutely terrible miserable person, at least for a while. I left Twitter and other social media when I realized what it was doing to me and I'm probably better for it

I mean, I predicted that years ago, when hashtag activism and the abridgement of thought and speech became hot shit. Now the average tweet is 28 characters long, which is too much for some people and the strain from attempting to read that much can drive them to actual, physical violence. That first sentence alone is now considered a wall of text on Twitter. And that's BEFORE you get into the SEO problem that it and all other social media have.

Better that the place be burned to the ground until not even the ashes remain.

Personally I think the biggest problem at the end of the day is people.
Twitter as a site just maximizes the interaction and engagement of it's users, and it all spirals out of control from there.
The true end game is quitting all social media.

Twitter is kind of a trap where I got a lot of friends on their and I can promote my work on their, but at the same time, I hate looking at it, especially my timeline. It's a mess of a site.

I constantly debate leaving.

Twitter can be a useful tool for getting your thoughts across to the public, and to post porn. But more often than not, it's just an unironical Highway to Hell.

I'm not getting off until there's nothing for me there anymore. But I can respect you for doing what you did nonetheless.

I feel you. I wanted nothing to do with a website that is full of people who can't seem to respect each other, and if you display any inkling of common sense, you get placed in the crosshairs of certain people, no matter how careful you are with your words. All that negativity wasn't something I wanted to see. I was only on there to upload my work.

Twitter is nothing but a cesspool now, and I've been much more positive since I gave up on it a couple months ago. It's a good thing you did too, Norithics.

Good decision. Ever since social media discovered that people spend longer on the site and engage more with content that actively makes them angry, that's what they've been cultivating the sites towards. I can say that my mental health took a noticeable upswing after I left, and I certainly hope that yours does too. =)

I'll admit, not being on Twitter is kinda great because you get a lot more free time - but then you also just have a lot more free time, and there aren't many more public places to post art and things where people will, you know, actually see it.

Because we sure ain't getting back into FA any time soon, eheheheheh.

Long story short I think we just have to be fine with a sore lack of outreach. Easy for me, because I immediately assumed nobody cared about my stuff anyway, but I imagine for an established artist it's a bit of a kick in the dick.

Twitter has....280 characters to get across a point.

Political and social commentary....requires way more than 280 characters to have any kind of nuanced conversation that does not degenerate into angry screaming. The platform unfortunately is not designed for those conversations and allows so much room for bad faith assumptions and conversation on these issues, so no real discussion happens. It leads to immediate fights and jumping down each other's throats.

People will read into a surface level statement, not examine the layers behind it, and make bad faith based assumptions of who you are ( unless you're of course saying blatant stuff like " kill all ____ " or something else of abhorrent, all we need to know is right there )

I use it to follow art and express/vent thoughts of mine that I don't really think about how it appears surface level, it's just me typing a piece of the things I think without really diving into the details to have nuanced discussion., because I didn't think I had any kind of following and mostly porn bots that I keep having to block following me, I could use it as that kind of space to sort out my thoughts that come from having brain damage.

Worst assumption I ever made.

Either way, you're free from it. It's good that you walked away.
caramelthecalf

I think twitter helped me minimally on commissions, but there is always the spectre of the possibility that people will gang up on my account over the art. It's not a good feeling.

I might reccomend pixiv to people for getting seen. From what I can tell, it seems Japanese customers are used to buying a finished product instead of buying commissions.

it's so very true and sad... but your completely right. Today it's me, tomorrow it will be you, the cancel culture woke machine is a hungry beast thats oiled by the blood of drama and narrative and Something always must be the bag guy, it does not matter who.

There is a Difference between "being woke" and having some common curtesy or decency and parts of the internet have completely forgotten this and it does not help that twitters moderation staff seems to have as well. It's like we dont talk or discuss any more we just attack and malign.

It's a feedback loop since it's DESIGNED to get you to engage with it. Easiest way to engage people is to get them upset. People will write long winded pages of stuff over a minor inconvenience far more often than something that was good they encountered, and retweet it more as well. And then it directs you to more of this until your saturated. It is by design made to be toxic as hell.

Personally I don't blame ya.  Twitter has become a cesspit of insanity as of late and people hating and being cruel to each other. And turning people slowly into sociopaths. I may delete my Twitter myself at one point if it gets any worse than it is now.

RegiosRhenac

I should be considering it too. The more time I spend there, the more I see people falsely accusing each other of being child molesters, nazis, murderers or any other heinous crimes, and no matter what you do, any attempt in defending yourself that is not you completely humiliating yourself before your attackers and saying they are absolutely right just proves you are the criminal they accuse you to be. It feeds into my anger issues, and it's like an addiction.

Are you implying that these crazies are worse than that? Because I sure as hell don’t know much worse than that lol.
RegiosRhenac
2 years, 12 months ago
Scum and villains usually know that they are doing bad things and admit it. I have seen some fuckers who goaded people into suicide or ruined their lives to the point that everyone around them hated their guts with false accusations. And they wore it like a badge of honor, always thinking that the things they did were good and righteous. To them, people who disagree with them are life unworthy of life, and they are the heroes cleansing the world of undesirables.
Jayjay9201
2 years, 12 months ago
Okay, I see your point, but that only goes for bad guys in fiction, Most villains in reality hardly ever see themselves as such, they always believe themselves to be in the right. (Hitler believed himself and his followers to be the "chosen ones" as he put it, destined to lead the world to peace. lol) As you yourself described, the people on twitter are no different than that, they commit these atrocities out of that twisted sense of righteousness. You know what though, you DID get me to change my stance on this, I now believe that these moron's aren't good enough to be considered villains, considering that these lunatics would rather attack fiction that any real version of what they have issues with, they're too cowardly.
RegiosRhenac
2 years, 12 months ago
That too, I had forgotten about that! They love to roleplay activist, but when the time comes to actually do some heavy lifting? Too good for them, they're already doing their part on a website.

That's been my experience with twitter as well... So much hate and anger, over something that most would consider petty or a small misunderstanding. There is no nuance when you say something online, no vocal inflection and usually no context outside of how the reader feels. What could have been playful picking or a joke has spiralled into chaos. Politics, politicians, the media, and twitter staff only make it worse. Making neutral people pick a side when they just want to remain neutral. Pushing that if you're not with me you're against me mentality. It's a dumpster fire. lol
farfox
2 years, 12 months ago
I agree, although I wonder why you think atomization is crucial to good internet interaction? Not saying you're wrong, just wondering why it has to be that way.

It's a shame though, I think for the purpose of "posting stuff for friends" it has a very nice format- you can share things in a less temporally sensitive manner than chatrooms with your friends. I did like catching up with my friends' posts sharing things about their life or fun things or random thoughts.

It's also so hard to get friends together in the same part of the internet without resorting to twitter or facebook. I have to jump between discord, steam, and twitter DMs to keep up with everyone...

PersonaMaltz
2 years, 11 months ago
I'm super happy someone else is talking about Dunbar's Number theory, because I think it's critical in considering the impact social media today.

Social Density theory(from the Mouse Utopia Experiment [which Secret of Nimh is based off of]) is also something to look up (though not too deep if you're squeamish about rat on rat violence that happened).  It explains why everyone is getting a bit weird I believe, feeling like an area is too crowded, but it's really just too many voices in social media.

There is only two 'healthy' ways I've seen Twitter and other social media used.  The first is simply as an announcement system, no comments allowed.  The second is as a reference system... where comments have to have links/pictures to what they are talking about to get past the 280 character limit.  It takes a lot more moderation, typically hiring a moderator to keep it clean as it's almost a full time job in itself.

It’s true! And it’s sad to watch what it’s doing to what were once happy productive artists like Durg and happyroadkill. If you look at their twitter it’s just 24/7 retweeting despair porn and hate posting. And I know exactly what they are going through. Twitter had me addicted to a self destructive cycle until I got in a fucking car accident because I was so obsessed with checking updates on tweets I didn’t notice a car stopping in front of me.

This may be an old post, but this has got to be the best decision you've ever made. I made a grave mistake in trying to make something of myself on Twitter. The bulk of its users are wholly unreasonable people with naïve outlooks on life that want nothing but to vilify those who make art of things they don't like. I and so many others were outright accused of advocating real life crimes, just because of what we drew and posted. And I admittedly let my anger for the people who'd do that get the better of me, and it caused me to say things I regret to this day.

After getting away from that place, I ended up doing a whole lot better. I finally graduated from college, starting exercising again, and now I'm currently studying for a certification to help with my future career, as well as starting up art commissions on this website, FA, and Baraag. And after being off of Twitter for so long, I came to understand this:

The moment you understand the majority of Twitter's users are coddled, miserable people who don't understand the world and can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality, and that you're not the villain they think you are and they'll be stuck endlessly complaining and vilifying people forever, is the moment things will start getting easier.
Norithics
2 years, 8 months ago
It's not that the individual people on Twitter are inherently bad necessarily- it's that the incentives of the website and the way that it's structured make it a Consensus Engine. It's like being thrown naked into a public park where everyone else in the world is. Without any way of filtering out the kind of content you see, everyone learns everything about everyone all at once- something we were never meant to do. There's no privacy and no room for nuance, so the only currency is consensus (self-evident truths or whatever "feels" correct), and snappy comebacks. It's the worst parts of high school, multiplied by the population of earth.
