Hello! I've been working on a small sketch comic for myself and I'm wondering how you guys would like to see it posted. Should I wait until I've completed it (still just sketches, but a complete story arc), or should I just post what I've got now and continue to update it as I work on it more?

I'm more of the wait for completion type of person but that's just me. Some people like the instant gratification.

Hmm like honestly this gets me thinking about like comics and how artists interact with their audience, because I've seen artists change their comics' direction based on feedback they get, so I almost wanna ask like if you would prefer to get feedback page by page, or on the completed comic~ :)

As a consumer, I prefer being able to read a comic from start to finish~

I'd enjoy either way.  I'll just be happy you posted something, because your work is awesome.

Perhaps snippets of the completed portions? Like a closeup, but not the full picture?

I've tried both and I still don't know the best way...

I think regular posting, like updating a page every other day or whatever would be cool, give folks time to read, and last a while, give you time between posts to correct or update things, etc.

Posting a big project all at once, like in a single post, is usually less satisfying because it doesn't get as much notice or attention for all the hard work that was put into it.

And like, 90% of the time I or others just post as we have stuff complete... the schedule is haywire or the project doesn't get completed. :c Sometimes that's okay, it can improve your work and let you adjust things according to feedback you get. But also it's hard to really be motivated without interruption.

I'm guessing the safest is to complete all the art first, and then figure out how you'd like to post it when you're ready. (:

If it were my project in folder (assuming I had the executive function to finish a drawing, whoops), I would wait to complete it before posting. If I know anything about my own workflow, getting it out there will cause there to be a domino effect of paranoid delusions like, "Well, what if this doesn't turn out like how I thought it would look in the sketches?" that can lead to anxious spiralling, in which I eventually end up with the ridiculous conclusion of "eh, well better make something that people can *instantly* see finished instead of egging them on with a project that'll never get done." and stop working on that project all together as it gathers psychic dust.

That being said, wips and teasers are also a great way to drum up audience and excitement. I know that when I see a sketch comic get completed, because I know how hard it can be to get over the sketch-to-finished hurdle, I get super excited about seeing it done and what the artist envisioned their piece as. And cropped teasers are //👀//💦

i've shifted my approach from "post as i make it" to "write the entire damn thing and draw at least a chapter before posting."

i think taking this approach has really helped me get more consistent results with my art, and gives me soooo much more time to get the story and art just right.

When i started the attempt i've already posted on here, i wasn't all that confident i'd be able to complete it. now that i've put in the kind of time it takes for me to look at a page and say "yep, that's exactly the way i wanted it" i'm so much more confident about completing it, and i've been able to put much more time into the story, and there's no rushing stories!

I think that if i had kept going with comic attempt #1 i would have looked back and felt more than a little eeeehhhhh about it, and i'd never be able to let go of the feeling that i'd have to re-do it.

i think posting a long-term project super publicly live as you make it can lead you to think a bit too much about how the next page is gonna be received before you even start. there's some mistakes that only become visible with time, and having a backlog can let you correct anything major that's slipped by before you make the mistake of posting it.

make something you want to be proud to show off long after it's made!

You should wait until completion. It surprises people a lot more and makes it so that they can appreciate the whole instantly... thus increased shock value. However, it's also best to keep samples of the creation as it is going... and then release them after the full release. Many people enjoy seeing how something wonderful was made and it's best to release that after the fact so the shock value is never lost
