Animal Crossing log 7 - THE RANT

by
The latest update trailer dropped today. It's essentially nothing. Could have been huge. But it's nothing. Instant gratification through the Nook Miles feature one more time. In the old games, you had to earn shit. But this game wants you to pay for online, connect with random people, and figure out how to have fun in a group. If you're playing single-player...fuck you. Everything is harder and also considerably less fun than previous games.

It sucks because the customization options are indisputably the best in the series. But everything else in New Horizons is at it's worst for the series. Everything. Sucks. Fun and character has been sucked out at every opportunity. Take this update for example...

They added new hairstyles and "reactions" (emotion animations). In previous games, hairstyles were gotten from the stylist character, Harriet (a poodle, I think). Reactions came from an axolotl named Dr. Shrunk, quite an amusing fellow despite being a legendarily bad comedian. In New Horizons, these characters are two of a multitude of cut characters, their jobs being given either to new characters or to machines. THREE postal worker characters were literally replaced by a card rack. Copper and Booker were replaced by a BOX. Kapp'n's entire family was replaced by two supremely annoying dodos who look identical. And Reactions & haircuts are essentially just GIVEN to you. In a way this is better for the hair as you can change up your look anytime through the mirror...but Shrunk, I dearly miss, and it's not like you NEED all the reactions at once, or like he made them hard to get (he didn't.)

Now, Halloween was fun, don't get me wrong. They added pumpkin farming (which was admittedly too easy) and the crafting recipes could actually be gotten multiple ways so it wasn't too stressful. Other seasonal recipes... Stress to the max. It's all I can do in Animal Crossing now. I have to hunt for seasonal crafting recipes by searching for & shooting down balloons-toting-presents, and PRAY to the RNG gods that I actually get one and it isn't a duplicate! It can take hours to get one. This has been most of autumn. This is NOT fun.

My island is complete. I'm more or less done moving in villagers. (btw, Big Top left us. He was replaced by Coco for Halloween, who then was replaced by Audie the fox. I'm getting amiibo cards soon but I despair of ever getting Cookie and I'm not fighting it much longer. The family of ten I got might be just about it.)

Now Thanksgiving and Christmas look to be about the same as New Leaf. Which is fine except...this is an update. They made us wait for this. If it's just the same as New Leaf, it should've been in the base game. And again, the update came with next to nothing else. Anyone who played the previous Animal Crossing games for a solid length of time can NOT be okay with how this one's being handled. There was basically nothing to do after the first 2 months unless you were building something specific (as I was.) Animal Crossing is supposed to last a year at least. I know that sounds tough, but they made it work several times before. This time, in the pursuit of making things easy for whiny baby players who don't like working for things...they took all the content away from the rest of us. That's the only conclusion I can make.

...I'm also just in a generally bad mood today so maybe the disappointment is hitting harder than it otherwise would. But there it is, my hot take. And my very late 7th log. The 8th log might just be a confirmation at the end of the month as to what Thanksgiving was like. Not much to tell anymore. I hate the time limit on the maple leaf crafting recipes. Miss how much fun the Spooky recipes were to collect.
