Do you see blue or purple?

by
Yesterday a friend of mine asked me why I colored Spinel blue. I was like.."nuuu...I made him purple!" And he was like "nah ah, it's blue". I grumbled and decided that his monitor was calibrated wrong. But then today I looked at the same image on both of my secondary monitors...and sure enough...blue -_-
On my main monitor though, it looks very purple and looks how I intended it.

The original color is something like indigo, between "all the way purple" and blue. I took pics of all 3 of my screens just to show you what I mean. Take a look. Do you see purple or blue?

Definitely blue. The highlights are magenta. Overall, it would say it's 70% blue/30% Magenta.

I see a definite bluish hue, but with over-bright purple patches, almost like the tint and intensity was off-kilter. Your other two monitors have significantly higher gamma (if the photos are representative) than the middle one. I'd make sure they're all at the same temp/colour balance. Run a colour calibration tool for each one?

The original looks nice and purple, incidentally. Looks like it's what you wanted.

Sweet ^^ Okay, just wanted to check with other people. Wasn't sure if my main monitor was calibrated right.

I'm getting a very purple "original image" on my screen right now.
Link for the posted image so I can compare?

I haven't posted it yet, but I put the original image right there at the bottom. Those other pics are my other monitors. I was just wondering if everybody saw blue in the original image except for me.

This is not the first time I've encountered different users scattered all over God's green earth, and conflicting color settings. Making sure every submission is a color-true image seems at-times a tricky business.

One monitor is blueish the other very purple.

actually, I wanted you to look at the original image at the bottom and see if it's blue or purple for you ^^;

I did that. One one of my monitors it is blueish on the other purple. They are slightly different in hues.

I'm a monochromat.  Purple is a -very- difficult color for me to interpret; I tend to see blue, which bugs my boyfriend to no end, as he's quite the purple-whore.  XD

Original image is very violet. But aside from Monitor Two the rest are blatantly blue.

I got the same result as Ultratails42. Except monitor 2 is a very deep blue with pink highlights. Monitor 1 and 3 and definitely a pale blue. Original image is definitely purple.

I'm glad the original is purple for you, that's how it supposed to look. The photo of monitor two does make it look pinkish in places, yeah.

I'm seeing it the same way. Monitor 1 is pale light blue, monitor 2 is burple and a slightly dark image, monitor 3 is light blue, but not as washed out as monitor 1, and the original image is clearly purple.

The thing that makes it really odd is the red and yellow look the same in all four pics, aside from image brightness, if a monitor was miscalibrated, you'd expect the red and yellow to not match up across the pics.

Using a recently calibrated monitor, the original is pretty much in between blue and purple, often called indigo. Monitor 2 is similar, though slightly more more toward blue, but with very purple, highlights that don't appear consistent with the main color. Monitors 1 and 3 are definitely shifted way toward blue, even approaching cyan. The gamma on those two also appears to be vastly higher than monitor 2, though that could be due to auto exposure in the camera.  The red in the eye on monitor 1 is shifted noticeably from the original.

The important monitor to calibrate is the one you are creating the art on, and you should do the calibration with any lighting set to how it normally is when you are working.  This should be a color calibration and not just a gamma calibration, as that much of a hue shift is somewhat huge.

nice to know that my vivid/hot settings i use show it purniple to me :) considering i have a hard time seeing hues of blue that is a complement. on it..

alot of blue things IRL look green or gray to me....   to the extent i carry a small video camra around to use it's screen to actuily see the hues of blue/purple exct.

Thinking on it ...
i bet the monitors that look "Blue" have red satuation turnd down..........

or the hue (if sed moniture uses hue) is tilted twards the B/W side a bit both of those situations can make yor perple look light blue.

red and blue make purniple.

Looks blue to me. The bottom "original" image looks navy, maybe a tiny bit purple. Granted, I'm partially colorblind, but 98% of the time that leads to blue looking purple, not the other way around.

A lot of people have difficulty to distinguish between those colours, as well as between pink and purple.
Perhaps they have a different biology based perception of colours, but I just blame it on never having taken colour studies (people with roots in art school or the like have generally a better understanding of colours).

wrong colour profile in at least a couple of those monitors...dont worry...it happens very often..im wondering teh same for my charachters colour too actually..how they look like colour-wise to other users,i mean...

dealing with gamma/gamut of screens/monitors/desktops in each computer its always a pain-in-the-ass  >.<

Anyone looking to get an affordable monitor calibration system, consider getting the PANTONE HueyPRO.  It's about 70 bucks.  people seem to either think it's great or absolutely hate it.  It's worked fantastic on my setup, and I suspect most people who are displeased don't really know anything about accurate colors and are just used to how it looked before calibration so they think it's off.

Who knows though.

Monitor 1 and 3: powder blue
Monitor 2: dark blue with purple highlights on the left sole, right heel, right buttock, and across the back of the shoulders.
Original image: depends on the angle I tilt my screen at.  Dark to light blue if viewing straight-on, purple if I tilt it forward 30 degrees.  It's a backlit LCD.
You can't really depend on colours looking the same to others; there are too many variations in types of monitors (CRT vs. LCD), lighting conditions, and people's vision.
